No disrespect to anyone but the whole musketeer thing is pretty stupid. And to an earlier poster, the whole "rational responders" thing is also pretty retarded. These are serious issues and stupid shit like that just makes us be taken less seriously. When I saw the opening to the RSS Vs Banana Squad debate and the RSS members (tatooed punks) were screaming stupid shit like "YEAH MOTHER FUCKERS!!" with their rock and roll hand signals it really turned me off. Also I think the did kinda poorly in the debate too or maybe it ywas the way it was edited. I dont know, I'm sure I'll get flamed as usual. Peace.

4. Religion and Child Abuse

Comment #47786 by catchy_nick on June 5, 2007 at 2:17 pm

I am against legislating what parents out to teach their kids. Daniel Dennett suggested that we teach children about ALL religions in schools. Their origins, their history and their *ahem* evolution and in some cases, their death. With no biases ofcourse. I couldnt agree more. I would go as far as saying the course should be mandatory. Also the fact that most children end up following their parents' religion should also be part of the syllabus. Even the "home schooled" should be tested on this. It'll take a generation or two, but I think it would pretty much get rid of atleast fundamentalism. We also need to teach our children to think critically and question everything. Including faith. I can already see faithhead cry babies calling this an attempt by satan to sway Xtians from the Word! Just like satan used the theory of evolution to make people doubt the FACT of creation.

I'm sick of Hitchens' nationalism personally, I wouldn't say I'm a proud Brit (I don't mark myself by my nationality) but his constant bashing of the British institution is somewhat tiresome. I'm not a monarchist, but it's ridiculous to think that the monarchy of this country has any real power these days, it's purely ceremonial, but Hitchens' seems to bang on about how our entire political system is still based around the Queen. Basically they ask the Queen to do stuff and she does it, can you image the uproar if she actually tried to exert any political influence?

Ironically he's a Bush defender, a man who's often said his faith guides policy decisions, but he refuses to criticize that, he'll happily criticize leaders of Muslim countries though who are also religious. Hitchens is a good speaker, and hits the nail on the head when it comes to religion, but he stinks to me as a bit of a hypocrite."

He clearly has kid gloves on when he talks about the US and Bush. His position on the latest act of terrorism america is involved in is also despicible and he should be ashamed of himself. On the other hand he is a very charming speaker and right on when it comes to faith. Maybe he can do some good over here (US). A nation full of overly patriotic idiots in love with their land might listen better to someone who has something in common with them. I dont know. I'm tired. Peace

I guess non-belief does guarantee intelligence. First of all I wasnt talking about the 9/11 hijackers when I said "poor brown people". I was refering to the schmucks who got carpet bombed by american terrorists. So take a reading/comprehension course. Secondly the subject of whether your votes matter or not is a pretty complicated one, and I'm not getting into it here. Like I said before, keep voting and celebrating when your candidate gets elected. I'm sure your lives always improve greatly when your guys gets into office dont they? I guess you cant give up ALL your delusions.

P.S. Just to piss you off; America sucks!

To Catchy-nick.

First off, you give the disturbing impression that you support islamic fundamentalist countries such as Iran, more than you would suport the US. Though I'm not sure which country you are from, i know if you are from europre, my grandfather most likely emancipated yours, and my great-grandfather 30 years before that. Not to mention the fact that the US will be the one to come to your aid when your country is in need of help, not iran, not afghanistan, not palestine, not syria, not saudi arabia, not jordan. So go on demonizing the united states and praising the poor people in the middle east who are just waiting for the moment when they can slit your throat. Just remember that when your country is in need of help, the US will be there, like it always has been.

As for the war is mesopotamia, I will take the rebuke that it was poorly planned, and executed, but I stand by the ideal, because the sooner that these countries develop, the sooner we can focus on real issues, such as getting of this rock before the sun envelopes it, or fighting off global warming. And while on the subject of emancipation, the US will be the country to stop the asteroid headed for earth, cantact april 13, 2036. I don't have anything against you and i accept your criticisms and I'm sorry if i offended you."

For the record, I am an american citizen and I live in the US. Patriots are just as silly as religious nutjobs. I dont support any countries at all. Your gross generalizations about how great America is and how evil Middle easterners are is another indication of your ignorance. I'm done arguing with you. Keep sniffing your flag with your eyes tightly shut. Its ok. I accept your appology. Peace. (no offense, I know you probably hate that word)

Catchy_nick sounds like one of those masochistic neo-liberals that blame the US for everything. 9-11 was an unprovoked attack on a civil society, performed by Islamic fascists who hate the US because of feminists, abortionists, pornography and secularism (ironic, Falwell has more in common with these barbarians). The US has done a lot of bad in the world, mostly all deriving back to the fight against communism (i.e. the funding of the Mujahadeen, many of whom are also members of al-Qaeda, to fight the soviets in Afghanistan). Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who knows why we went to Iraq, or perhaps this reason is of my making, but the way that I understand it is that a democratic state in the middle-east would be, in itself, a fight against terrorism. Unfortunately, the incompetence of the Bush administration has left this hope in the dust, mostly because it is littered with bible thumping graduates from Pat Robertson's university. On the abortion issue, 16 weeks sounds like enough time for the mother to decide, but then personal responsibility and the fetus' rights come into play."

Hmm. Where do I begin, I'm one of those, "masochistic neo-liberals that blame the US for everything". Thats such a straw man that I wont bother. Unprovoked attack? You cant be serious. Is it that hard for your simple patriotic mind to understand that if I was a poor brown man living in an obscure village in a country the name of which you probably cant even pronounce and lost my entire family to US carpet bombing, and had nothing to live for, I just might dedicate my life to revenge? Your claim that the only time the US had done any "bad" in the world was to fight communism clearly shows your belief in cherished myths about mindless patriotism. Unfortunately this Zeus forsaken country is filled with semi-conscious chunks of protoplasm wrapped in American flags like you, who have a hard time facing reality. Anyone who thinks the public inst responsible for the actions of its govt around the world obviously doesn't understand how democracy works. These corrupt politicians who don't give a shit about people don't just fall out of the sky, your precious votes give them the power to commit atrocities around the world and in their own country. Keep living under the delusion that America is the greatest country in the world, and that your votes matter. Its sad to see someone who can clearly see through the bullshit of faith through critical thinking cant see through the bullshit your beloved leaders feed you everyday. The body count from the so called 'Muslim terrorists' pales in comparison to the body count from needless wars waged by this evil nation in the name of preservation of national interest. As far as you being the only one who knows why America went into Iraq, I congratulate you. But not everyone around the world is amused by America's propagation of its so called democracy and economic infrastructure on other nations. A country that has a 100 different choices when it comes to buying baby food but two choices of political parties (evil and slightly less evil) is going to build a democracy in another country in its own image eh? A country over 5 trillion dollars in debt is going to give someone else advice on handling their money? Great idea!! Ok I'm tired gonna crash now.
GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES AND ITS TROOPS!!

OK! Here goes nothing. His position on the war sucks, I'm sorry, it does. I've argued with some of you before about this, I know the neccesity of war in some rare situations, and this wasnt one of them. And appologies in advance (not really) for this, but America IS a terrorist nation. I agree with Falwell that the US brought 9/11 on herself, but not because of homosexuality or feminism, but for what she has been doing to other nations for many decades. People tend to shoot back once in a while. Keep picking on the scrawny guy at the bar all the time and he will hit you upside the head one day with a barstool when youre not looking.
As far as abortion goes, it sucks, plain and simple. But I strongly believe that only seculars are in any position to decide ethically and morally on this issue. The "soul" bullshit has to go. In the end its still a woman's issue and a woman's choice though. I would even go as far as saying that men shouldnt even vote on this issue at all (yes I am a man). Just like white people have no business voting on whether blacks should be free or slaves. Let the women decide whats right and wrong when it comes to abortion, men, stay the fuck out of it. Obviously an abortion 2 weeks before the delivery date is ridiculous, and term limits need to be set, but in the end it should be about human suffering (the fetus and the woman) not when the soul enters the body. Let the flaming begin. Peace.

Comment #40750 by catchy_nick on May 14, 2007 at 10:35 pm

One of the "big" arguments from religious apologists is that without god one cant be good, and our morals come from god himself. Hence we need to believe in biblical fairy tales to live in a moral society.
The fact that our cousin species live cooperatively, in groups, work together, have common goals, play games, celebrate the births of their young, mourn over their dead, respond to music, practice altruism, refrain from incest, look up to the more intelligent and stronger members of their bands, etc etc must prove that their morals come from a monkey carpenter, son of King Kong, who got nailed to a banana tree for all monkeys who ever lived and who will ever be born so who so ever believes in his divine monkeyness will enter the kingdom of monkey heaven, and the rest will burn in ape hell and never see bananas again (Kong 3:16). What about social insects? Vampire bats? And all the countless other species showing behaviour patterns so similar to human moral agreements? Theres a dead and resurrected animal Jesus born via asexual reproductive means for every species I guess.
Surely they could come up with something better than "My sky fairy makes me good!"

I'm just curious what kind of "exercises" men with sub-par bed skills or small penises should be doing to "up their skills" so the clever women would remember them?
I'm sorry but that was a very ignorant thing to say. Hopefully your response will not make baseless judgments of my own bed-skills which will make you sound even dumber.
The only interpretation that would make sense of what you said would be that men should make more of an effort trying to understand female sexuality and sexual anatomy, since men almost always end up climaxing (it ain't that hard to get a dude off) but not all of them can even tell if the woman did or not. Reciprocity in sexual encounters could arguably be a moral obligation and I agree, men should definitely put some more work into it. And also I'm curious as to what the "cleverness" of the woman has to do with any of this? I'm not attacking your intelligence here but a mere suggestion, try to articulate your statement a little better next time. Thanks.

OOOokay! Ofcourse most of us have already heard everything what RD said in his part of the interview, I want to point out one thing in the panel part that people dont seem to be talking about here. Why is it that none of the three honorable panelists tried to refute any of RD's arguments posed in TGD? All I heard was three cry babies complaining about his "approach" or his "dismissive style". How he isnt a "deep thinker". Where are their rebuttals to the content of RD arguments? Ofcourse they had nothing to say. These arent invented by RD, he just "breathed" some "new life" into them into a highly readable book (pun alert). If the rebuttals existed we would've heard of them by now. Total nonsense. So tired of "you can catch more flies with honey, be nice you big meanie!! WAAaaa!!" garbage. Its nothing more than a desparate cry to stop the erosion of blind faith by hard hitting reason.

P.S. Lets not forget the female spiritual advisors comment about how she shouldn't have to prove god's existance becuase it is an "inner thing" (paraphrase). But she also says you cant have religion without a sense of community??!?!?!?! So keep it to yourself but also keep spreading you self-proclaimed "absolute truth" to others!?!? What bullshit! As much as I dont like Chris Hitchens, I love this one line (paraphrase again); "I'm not trying to take your toys away from you, I just dont want you to bring them over to my house to play with them".

People who say that so-and-so is very clever -- because of their anti-religion debating skills -- are starting to bore me. These debaters may indeed be clever but it's for a reason I'm not aware of, I'd never judge a person's intelligence by listening to them performing this relatively simple task. It is perhaps significant that the most intelligent people never seem to engage in anti-religious discussions, could it be they find it lacks challenge, or is simply boring?"

Once again, dancing fairies. You need to provide some evidence for the divinity of Heysoos, and the Bibile before we can get into any arguments. In principal it should end there. We dont take astrology seriously or have intense discussions about the effects of zodiac signs on our planet do we? Why? because its meaningless. Theres no evidence to validate it. Just because millions of papers print horoscopes doesnt mean theres any truth to it. Whats up with reformations?? Changes in the church? Changes in Xian doctrine? Why the hell do we need to change god's perfect word? Are we smarter than god all of a sudden? God said kill homosexuals, who are we to say it not ok? Any Xtian who doesnt take the bible seriously and literally is not completely honest with him/herself. Lets not forget thats the ONLY communication ever made with humans by their creator. The creator of life, matter, energy and the entire universe and all its beauty within it. Youre trying to tell me that you small minded mortals have outsmarted god himself and you wanna change his only letter written to man (yes I said MAN not humans for a reason). Ridiculous! And how can you not take the only document (10 commandments) HAND WRITTEN by the sky daddy literally. How dare you make an image of anything in heaven including jesus anf mary? The crosses some Xtians wear are also an abomination. This is exactly why I'm not a believer. If I truly believed in a sky daddy as my creator with the ultimate intelligence, I would take his word (even if it was only inspired) very very seriously. I have no right to alter one word of it. In closing, here to those who think the old testament became irrelevant after jesus;

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

The country that CH and some of you love so much has to be one of the biggest terrorist states in history. Theyve waged more meaningless wars than anyone else. The only country to use a "new-queue-lar" bomb on innocent civilians. Read its history, land hungry, racist europeans built this country on the backs of slave labor on top of indian graves. Sorry the idea that "dropping nukes on Japan saved more lives than if the war had continued" is bullshit. Thats like saying we know for a fact people will be less moral without god, so lets turn our backs on religion. Theres no nice way to say it, so I'll keep it simple. Patriotism is tribalism. I know we've only been out of the caves for a few thousand years, nano seconds in cosmic time, but we've also put people in space, wheres the political movement for reuniting the human species as one, vs mindless nationalism based on circumstantial locations of birth and the accidental shuffle of dermal melanin genes?

36. Christopher Hitchens and Al Sharpton: A Debate God Is Not Great

Comment #38636 by catchy_nick on May 8, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Ok I just finished watching this debate. I think CH didnt respond well to AS's core argument. Not once did he ask which "God" AS claims to be great. I hear that from believers all the time. "Where did anything and everything come from? Who designed the laws of the universe?" I think the blind design of evolution by natural selection comes to mind and is a very powerful argument against an intelligent creator. Hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, plate tectonics, our inability to inhabit this planet on over 70% of its surface, most of the known universe cannot support life, trillions of lifeless planets, recurring ice ages on earth, global warming, (I could go on for days), might not completely rule out the existance of an intelligent creator but puts a pretty big dent in the theory. Someone like Daniel Dennett would've destroyed this jesus sniffer in about 10 mins. Actually most atheists on this website would've been better armed against AS's dumb arguments and his obsession with the book's title Vs. its actual content. Let the flaming begin. :D

This should be interesting. Although I agree with CH when it comes to religion, I cant stand most of his political views. I have a real problem with conservatives of any kind. This guy is no different. Also with the words atheist demonized so much, the last thing we need is a sauced up alkie bashing goD on TV. Sorry CH fans, I cant get behind someone who believes that life is precious and we get one shot at it, but its ok for political gain to spray napalm on small brown children. Peace.

You satan worshipping, lying, cock sucking atheists have gotten it all wrong!! He doesnt want mindless robots worshipping him. Whats the point of that? God wants us to love him by our own free will and choice with no pressure. He wants us to come to him freely, get it? You morons! Just like if a man rapes a woman at gun point and says, "I want you to make love to me by your own choice and free will, Oh, by the way, if you dont, Ill blow your brains out". Why cant you infidels understand the simple fact that God is the ultimate rapist, and he loves you very much.

Something I say all the time;

Illegal immigrants coming to this country uninvited, bringing over their diseases, taking our stuff, leeching off our resources, frequently forcing us to move out of our neighborhoods, sleeping with our women and destroying the culture. Goddammit!

Doesn't it remind you of something that happened on this very land not too long ago? At least the Mexicans aren't bent on destroying an entire civilization of innocent humans and driving to extinction hundreds of languages and cultures, while building their new society on the backs of slave labor on top of Indian graves. Sorry "my fellow Americans" if payback is such a bitch. History repeats itself.

This is for all the "hatas" out there. Take your cell phone or blackberry or your stupid little gameboy and try explaining it to a caveman. We have acquired technology through science that was unimaginable a mere few thousand years ago(lets not forget that a few thousand years are a mere nano seconds in cosmic time). This is definitely very long term planning and thats ok. I do think this can stay on the back burner for a while and checked up on here and there. I dont think we devote much resources to the space program anyways. What needs to be done is this. Havent we found a planet perfect for life as we know it? Thats right. Its here. What are we going to do about it? I'll let Carl Sagan sum it up for me.

To paraphrase Carl Sagan, "Sometimes I look at a star in the sky and wonder if theres a planet going around it, and then I wonder if theres life on it, and then further wonder if theres an intelligent being on it looking at my sun wondering the same thing". Its so sad that we work hard to find planets out there remotely like ours so the human species might potentially inhabit it in the future, you know as in long term planning, and there are people on this rock who think the world was created for them and they can trash it all they want and God will come floating down on a cloud to save the day.
