2. Hitchens and Boteach Debate on God

Comment #126685 by Russell's Teapot on February 14, 2008 at 12:32 am

It was interesting to see Hitchens debate a Jew, as opposed to the only other of his debates I've seen, which was with D'Souza. The simple reason being that Schmuley made the requisite 'no morality without religion argument' and of course justified it with the 10 Commandments. I felt it would have been appropriate here for Hitchens to say something like "Really? In the last debate I was in, I was told that morality came from Jesus! Whom am I to believe?!"

4. Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable'

Comment #123644 by Russell's Teapot on February 7, 2008 at 12:37 pm

He stresses that "nobody in their right mind would want to see in this country the kind of inhumanity that's sometimes been associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states; the extreme punishments, the attitudes to women as well".
Sometimes? What Sharia-ruled countries is he looking at?

5. God vs. Gridiron

Comment #121077 by Russell's Teapot on February 3, 2008 at 12:00 am

I'm just curious- how much studying does the average rugby player have to do for a given game?

7. MySpace: No place for Atheists?

Comment #118380 by Russell's Teapot on January 30, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Do we really want atheism associated with MySpace? It's owned by Rupert Mur-dick and the whole point seems to be to have a website that will let you relive the days of crappy HTML websites and garish web styling.

By the way, anyone that has an account on Digg- digg this article!

8. Dawkins is third most prolific internet Briton

Comment #117738 by Russell's Teapot on January 29, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Well, this list was a strong reminder that I almost never listen to British musical artists :)

9. 'Irrational Atheist' trounces God-deniers

Comment #117464 by Russell's Teapot on January 28, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I came across this on my atheism Google News feed and just stopped when I got to the word "shrill". Fleeeeeeeea...

10. A Letter From Hell

Comment #115856 by Russell's Teapot on January 24, 2008 at 11:34 pm

(Unless I'm missing it) this needs the little "The site this came from allows commenting! You should tell them what you think!" blurb. Funny comments and/or clever usernames encouraged :)

11. A Letter From Hell

Comment #115846 by Russell's Teapot on January 24, 2008 at 11:11 pm

The scariest thing about that was the text scrolling too fast in the beginning.

12. Ask Mitt what he thinks

Comment #114255 by Russell's Teapot on January 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm

That's what the big feet were intelligently designed for, obviously.

13. The OUT Campaign has its own Flea!

Comment #106407 by Russell's Teapot on January 2, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Is it even possible for 80+% of the US population to be 'in the closet'? That's a huge-ass closet, right there.

Next up: campaigns for right-handed people to show their natural dexterity.

14. Carl Sagan's COSMOS begins airing on Jan 8th

Comment #104789 by Russell's Teapot on December 29, 2007 at 12:40 pm

The Discovery Science channel (usually just the 'Science Channel' on TV guides) is much different from the Discovery Channel.

Discovery Channel has sadly shifted to lowest common denominator programming and the only thing usually worthwhile to watch there is Mythbusters. The Science Channel actually has interesting and informative programming. They had a mini Cosmos marathon on Christmas day and have an interesting show about renewable energy late at night.

Over winter break all I've been watching on TV is the Science Channel with a bit of Futurama and Military Channel sprinkled in :)

15. New journal to target education in evolution

Comment #103873 by Russell's Teapot on December 27, 2007 at 6:58 am

I wonder if he understands, for instance, why vaccines need to keep up with evolving microorganisms, or why it's important to complete a course of antibiotics.
I'm fairly certain that Ron Paul believes some sort of garbage about government vaccine conspiracies, or at least thinks it's a major affront to American liberty to *gasp* have mandatory vaccinations. So it wouldn't be at all surprising if his ignorant views on evolution at least partially contributed to some of the bullshit he pushes.

18. Survey finds most Americans believe Jesus born of virgin

Comment #102326 by Russell's Teapot on December 22, 2007 at 11:08 am

Anyone else notice that the percentage of people who believed in each little Bible story decreased seemingly as a function of how famous the story is? You get huge amounts of people believing in Jesus' virgin birth, then 69% for water into wine, and down to 49% for Samson and Delilah.

Edit: Well now that I think of it, according to my hypothesis Adam and Eve should be higher than that, though they did throw in the bit about the literal devil...Maybe just a function of how the polling questions were asked. How else do you explain 15% virgin birth belief in atheists and agnostics?

19. The Four Horsemen: on Christmas

Comment #99912 by Russell's Teapot on December 17, 2007 at 8:10 pm

Blu-ray? Are those the odd discs that only people with PS3s buy? ;)

21. THE FOUR HORSEMEN - Available Now on DVD!

Comment #98878 by Russell's Teapot on December 14, 2007 at 8:03 pm

I was going to ask if Hitch ever combs his hair, but decided to do a Google images search first and I've decided that he can keep it uncombed :)

22. Voyager 2 probe reaches solar system boundary

Comment #97960 by Russell's Teapot on December 12, 2007 at 10:05 pm

But scientists missed observing the crucial moment because the sensitive radio dishes on Earth needed to hear the spacecraft's transmissions did not happen to be listening at the time.

That's because the dishes are in high demand for other missions, such as Cassini, and therefore cannot listen to the Voyagers around the clock. The Voyagers cannot store their observations onboard, so they are lost forever if they are not relayed to Earth as they are made.

Next step: develop faster than light travel so that we can catch up with those signals ;)

23. The art of the soluble

Comment #95646 by Russell's Teapot on December 8, 2007 at 10:51 pm

It's like they all just pick their arguments out of a hat full of little paper slips; I must have read a thousand of these and not a single one of them seems to have an original thought.

25. Fox: 'Atheist Outrage' over holiday 'Tree of Knowledge'

Comment #94734 by Russell's Teapot on December 6, 2007 at 11:26 am

"Meeranmar"? No, I don't know about that place, Mr. Catholic. It sounds like it's in the same situation as Myanmar, though.

26. Sherri Shepherd needs to go away now

Comment #94533 by Russell's Teapot on December 6, 2007 at 12:02 am

I feel confident that however this woman dies, she will be a Darwin Award candidate.

27. Bah, Hanukkah

Comment #94482 by Russell's Teapot on December 5, 2007 at 6:39 pm

Umm, Mr Monkey, have you not read the old testament ?

Took the words right out of my mouth!

And if I recall correctly, the modern Jewish state has an extensive record of conquering and abusing its neighbors.

28. Why Science Can't Save the Republican Party

Comment #93332 by Russell's Teapot on December 2, 2007 at 6:16 pm

This article should be "Why [any noun] Can't Save the Republican Party". They've been beyond hope since Reconstruction.

29. Double-checking Dawkins

Comment #92950 by Russell's Teapot on December 1, 2007 at 8:03 pm

I'm pleasantly surprised that this wasn't from some creationut who checked it and decided Dawkins was wrong about the entire book based on finding that he typed the wrong bits :)

30. Why debate dogma?

Comment #91883 by Russell's Teapot on November 29, 2007 at 1:56 pm

As always, a great video from Pat. I need to sit down some time and watch the videos he posted before I subscribed :)

31. Mitt the Mormon

Comment #91155 by Russell's Teapot on November 27, 2007 at 12:28 pm

He won't answer these questions precisely because he's running for the Republican nomination. None of the Gawd-fearing Christian base would much like the answers to these questions, and he knows it. By keeping it off the table, he gets the benefits of not having to deal with being considered a heretical cultist by the base, and being able to play the religious persecution card.

32. Fox News Discussion on 'The Golden Compass'

Comment #85740 by Russell's Teapot on November 7, 2007 at 1:15 am

The health care system in this country would collapse without Christianity? I supposed the same could be said about the health care provided by Hezbollah in Lebanon, but that does not mean that Hezbollah is full of do-gooders.

33. The Turning of an Atheist

Comment #85040 by Russell's Teapot on November 4, 2007 at 4:15 pm

RD, please promise us that if you go old and senile, you'll start believing in unicorns or leprechauns so that these con artists cannot take advantage of you :)

34. The Turning of an Atheist

Comment #84965 by Russell's Teapot on November 4, 2007 at 11:26 am

Disgusting...

I picked up a pamphlet at a local store entitled "has SCIENCE found GOD" and the main article focuses on Flew's "conversion" then goes into your typically inane arguments from design. If anything, it provided some chuckles on the bus ride home, but the exploitation showed by these theists on a consistent basis is just outrageous.

35. Jury Awards Father $11M in Funeral Case

Comment #84348 by Russell's Teapot on November 1, 2007 at 9:20 pm

We also have a common law offence of "breach of the peace". If my conduct is likely to give rise to unrest or potential violence, then I can be arrested and prosecuted.
Like during those pesky rebellions against oppressive governments?

36. Why Christians should take Richard Dawkins seriously

Comment #72273 by Russell's Teapot on September 20, 2007 at 3:47 pm

"What Dawkins demolishes in this book may well be a misrepresentation of God, but it is a misrepresentation, an idol, that we Christians all too have often set up and espoused as the real thing."
Um, correct me if I'm wrong here, but if Christians are representing this "misrepresentation" as the god they believe in, isn't that the damn god they believe in?! This article makes my brain hurt...

37. God Talk on 'The View'

Comment #71852 by Russell's Teapot on September 19, 2007 at 7:08 pm

No wonder Barry Manilow didn't want to go on this show. What a bunch of gits.

38. A Table for One

Comment #71071 by Russell's Teapot on September 17, 2007 at 6:27 pm

I see what you're saying, ECA, but Colbert teaches Sunday School and has said (as Real Life Stephen) that he's a Catholic. He's probably a fairly liberal one, of course, but he at least superficially believes in Sky Chief and his Zombie Son.

39. Griffin's 'offensive' Emmy speech to be censored

Comment #69823 by Russell's Teapot on September 13, 2007 at 12:02 am

It must be a pretty weak god these people have, if he can be threatened by a few sound waves. Just in case he starts to get blown away, I suggest they...nail...him down...

:)

40. The smallest signs of retreat

Comment #68617 by Russell's Teapot on September 7, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Really? You need him to establish the distinction between a virus and a disease? Really?
Ah, you got to it before I did :) I would think that anyone with a basic command of biology and/or the English language could make the distinction, but I suppose Ms. Bunting cannot be expected to have either.

41. The Mix Tape of the Gods

Comment #68255 by Russell's Teapot on September 6, 2007 at 2:15 pm

I've learnt quite a bit from this site, and the comments on it, so I won't be put off just because of some random caustic comment from some random poster.

I guess some people just know everything, or at least, think they know everything :)

I think, as has been said, it's a pretty easy mistake to make if you don't know a whole lot about the subject. Don't let the trolls get you down for honestly trying to clarify the issue :)

43. Like any half-decent atheist, I'm fond of a bit of religion

Comment #67918 by Russell's Teapot on September 5, 2007 at 6:57 am

Methinks the Professor takes a little too much satisfaction in the eloquence of his own metaphors and too little account of the richness of the alternatives

Methinks Mr. Linklater takes too much satisfaction in his own "wit" and is not willing to consider ceremonies and rituals without religious hogwash attached.

44. The Flea Circus moves to your iPod!

Comment #67506 by Russell's Teapot on September 3, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Honestly...I could perhaps see needing a rebuttal for an in-depth science, history, literary work, but for TGD? If it were really all that chock-full of logical fallacies and inaccuracies, anyone with a high school education should be able to tear it apart for themselves.

This reeks of shepherds guiding their flock quietly past the break in the fence.

45. Fruit fly parasite's gene invasion raises questions over evolution

Comment #66820 by Russell's Teapot on August 31, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Thank you for the help, Corylus :) Is there any reason why it would allow me to upload the avatar, but not display it on my comments? I've confirmed that the darned thing shows up in forum posts, but my poor name is image-less in article comments still.

I even made sure it was 109x96 pixels and 15 kB...Do you need a certain amount of posts?

46. Fruit fly parasite's gene invasion raises questions over evolution

Comment #66789 by Russell's Teapot on August 31, 2007 at 12:16 pm

Sorry for the double post, but how the heck do you get an avatar on these article comments?

47. Fruit fly parasite's gene invasion raises questions over evolution

Comment #66788 by Russell's Teapot on August 31, 2007 at 12:15 pm

you all know what this means? the creationist loons will jump on this to show how wrong evolution is.

It wouldn't be surprising, since they seem to have the dubious talent of spinning similar scientific findings to "support" creationism, no matter how fuzzy the logic.

48. The importance of doubt

Comment #66522 by Russell's Teapot on August 30, 2007 at 8:47 am

Perhaps he didn't realize it was irony due to the lack of any apparent sense of humor. To be fair, he seems rather dull.

49. Anger over 'blasphemous' balls

Comment #66237 by Russell's Teapot on August 29, 2007 at 12:15 pm

Oh FFS Russel's Teapot, grow up. You cannot keep up with the things that these morons get offended by. We continually find new and unusual ways to offend them on a daily basis.

Ah yes, because it's such a stretch of the imagination to think for a second "Hey, might these people be offended by having their flag (which contains the name of a god that they're often spastic about) put on a ball that's going to be kicked around in the dirt?"

I'm not looking for policy makers or bureaucrats to tread on eggshells when it comes to these people, but for FSM's sake, show some common sense. Acting in the best interest of PR doesn't necessarily mean not having to cater to the ridiculous.

50. Another view

Comment #66228 by Russell's Teapot on August 29, 2007 at 11:42 am

And here I thought I could get through a whole article supporting alternative "medicine" without seeing quantum physics evoked as a reason why we should believe bat-shit insane medical treatments.

Silly me.
