Ha - Next years GR and QFT lecture courses would certainly be more interesting if the lecturer suddenly started calling things 'absolute wank' and refering to other scientists as 'fucktards'.
Science with attitude.... so instead of writing strongly worded letters to the times, they'd write to NME magazine? :)

Please make a comment about the interview.
It kinda felt like the interviewer was setting up RD for answers, rather than asking searching questions, though it was a better interview than most.
I just get the feeling that these interviews all deal with the same questions and know exactly what they are gonna get as an answer.

whitepearl,
I HATE ceremony of any sort, i'm really not big on dressing up and showing off - weddings are a definition of hell for me. I'm fully aware that weddings tend to be more important for the gal, who gets to be centre stage - however, it's refreshing to hear a female who isn't so needy.
Also, if i like where i am - i don't need a legal contract to keep me there, i don't shirk responsibilies. Yet the IDEA of being trapped in a legal contract where i know i'll get hammered if i try and break free is more likely to make me want to 'get the hell out' - does that make sense?
I very much agree with your point about inequality in some divorces - you are not as alone on your opinions on marriage as you think.

gcdavis,
I wouldn't recommend it. :)
I always thought i was the only one whose view of their future happiness wasn't shackled into the idea that i HAVE to get married and have kids at some point. Nice to know that some other people think along similar lines.
I'm not necesarily against having kids, but i can't see me ever planning for them and i certainly don't need my own kids to fulfil some 'inner completeness' - marriage, well if i ever want tax breaks, i'll think about it.

Yes, but apparently a "tongue in cheek" comment in response to a "tongue in cheek" comment doesn't come across well over the interwebs ;)
Blaming vested interests is like trying to explain the origins of religion by reference to the wealth and power of the 13th century church.

Maybe brainwashing? Consistantly ramming it down our throats? If you made films about people wearing tin hats, showing how great it was, wrote novels where people are only 'happy' at the end when they finally get their own tin hat, etc. - now do that for 120 years - kinda pushes it into the mainstream culture (a meme, maybe?)
However, I wouldn't know, i don't harbour any illusions about 'love' - if i suddenly have a mad dash accross Heathrow terminal 4 to stop someone getting onto a plane - i'll let you know.
Also, are you aware of the concept of 'tongue in cheek' comment?

Richard,
Hmm, very good point.
Though i'm sure this isn't the first time that someone has used a well known name to publicise there own views - i guess maybe it's similar to the argument from authority, 'You have to believe him, he's written books before you know'.
What's sad is that there was no one around Flew to advise him against this.

Bollocks, bollocks i say!
To quote a leading modern philosopher,
'What's love got to do, got to do with it, what's love but a second hand emotion' - Tina Turner
Call me cynical, but love is just a load of claptrap made up by Jane Austin (Oh, Mr D'Arcy!), then subsequetly sold on to card companies and Disneyland (don't get me started on Disney).

Carto - I think (no evidence to back this up, pure speculation) jealousy and personal insecurities are very widespread in most societies, just some societies train people to deal with them better.
Stoning a women to death for adultery (assuming she was a willing participant) sends a powerful message to other women - especially ones wife, so maybe it would benefit a man to stone another women to death, as a threat towards his wife.
(I don't agree with stoning women to death, btw - just speculating on why killing people for adultery came about)

I personally can't wait for 'The Genius of Charles Darwin' to be shown, RD is the man when it comes to science on TV (my evidence, his RI christmas lectures and 'The enemies of Reason') - in fact, hopefully the whole Darwin program of events will actually explain what evolution is - never has a scientific theory been so woefully misunderstood by so many, who then form opinions on it.

Interesting ... i've always thought that every religion worked on the assumption that 'we are right, the rest are wrong' - that seems like a pretty intractable situation.
However, if the talks are, 'We agree to disagree and we won't attack you, if you don't attack us' then i guess it's worth it, for now anyway.
This seems to be treating religions like cultural groups - not belief systems - i know they are both but the UN and all other bodies need to be openly honest and say that 'These are non commutable operators here, there is guarenteed to be issues' instead of pretending it's solely down to misunderstanding each other.
