Clearmind appears in many forms, all of which are pretty stupid. Oh wait...that's the supernatural being.

Boy, if you don't pop in during the day, it takes awhile to catch up. Plus I had to stop laughing at the comment on the other thread about a paper bag full of vodka vapors.

Too bad Laurie's gone. Frank Zappa went to my high school and wrote a song about it called "Lancaster High", so he's always been a favorite of mine. His "River of Shit" is going through my head right now (speaking of the pope).

All races are created equal.

Ten Commandments' of race and genetics issued.

This is one of my pet peeves. Grrrr. It is a science article damn it.

[edit] Plus, in the title, they only capitalize Ten Commandments'. Holy moly.

I've seen Bela on Letterman and couldn't remember who he was the next day. Now that I've connected his face with the name, I know who you're talking about. Nice to hear something played on a banjo that isn't church music.

Did you mention Thatcher before? Did she die yet, or still just planning on it? I thought instead of a 3 mil. funeral, they could just recycle her as old scrap, since she WAS the iron lady.

Didn't mean to depress anyone w/ my last post, it was many years ago. My family were all catholics so they have the ability to believe anything. I should write a book, it be in the comedy section.

I got blamed for causing my mom's colon cancer by my family, because I was an atheist. The funny things the superstitious believe. The lord works in strange ways. I'm the atheist, so he zaps my mom, the believer, with cancer. What a bastard he must be.

My problem is, when I met my wife she hated beer. I could have just said, that's nice honey. But noooo, I had to use the ol' try this, or this. I was brewing my own back then, and made some great brews.

Now when I go to the fridge....EMPTY. I created a monster that drinks my beer, should of left "well-enough alone.

Actually, orange slices go great with Blue Moon.

[edit] Coco already mentioned this above. Just dragged a bottle out of the fridge. It is a white wheat/oats beer, brewed with orange peel and coriander. The orange slices bring out the natural flavor of the beer. Yep, that tastes good.

Comment #212254 by mordacious1 on July 16, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I finally got around to watching the videos today. Very enjoyable watching two brilliant minds discuss relevant topics of science. Thank you Richard for making these videos available to us here.

I am a little embarrassed that the thread was so quickly lowered to the level it is at now. I think on topics as this, people like Kristopher should be trolled and not responded to. I would prefer that posters discuss the material in the talk, saving the arguing with the trolls for other, less important threads.

I am glad to hear Dr. Weinberg discuss multiverses and string theory in a positive manner, after the beating they have taken from others on this site recently. They may not be proven to be correct in the long run, but they do lead to some interesting theoretical physics. I for one enjoy reading on these topics and will continue to do so until they are totally debunked, if that is the case.

"Axess is a magazine, based in Stockholm, devoted chiefly to the liberal arts and social sciences. The magazine strives, above all, for quality of thought and writing, but without being defined by a single political position. The hallmark of Axess is the essay; characterised by a probing, investigative approach. The magazine is open to differing arguments and standpoints, driven by reason rather than polemic."

I am not an advocate of gun control either.

If one reads through these posts, it becomes obvious why there aren't any effective laws being put in place to a) reduce gun violence b) reduce accidental shootings. This issue is very polarizing. Either you are a lefty, gun-control freak or a right wing gun nut. It is difficult to pass enforcable legislation where one side sees everything as a slippery slope to "taking away our 2nd Ammendment rights" and the other side wants a complete ban for whatever reason.

To answer your questions 1) yes 2)no, but fatalities from violent crimes, probably.

I'll give you an example of effective legislation. You stated earlier, that it is illegal for anyone in CA to use more than a 5 round magazine on semi-auto rifles. Rarely enforced, I can go online right now and order 30 round magazines for an AR-15, and have it delivered to my door by UPS. No one would care either, unless I got caught committing a crime, then they could tack on another couple of months to my sentence.

[edit] above is better example of non-effective legislation. Effective, I meant, would be if they would be able to stop this, and that would mean a ban on these magazines throughout the U.S. and enforce it with stiff penalties all around.

I am assuming that usually the police in Hong Kong do not carry firearms.

I think it is interesting that the police/criminal dynamics are like an arms race. If the criminals started using guns, the cops would. If the cops (or law abiding citizens) started carrying guns, the criminals would.

The problem in the U.S. is that the arms race has already occurred, and we'd have to come up with a way to disarm all sides. This, of course, is harder to do.

I can understand your point of view. I spent most of my life either carrying an M-16 or wearing a .45 . In civilian government work, I rarely went anywhere without a concealed firearm, it was part of the job there too. I don't currently own a weapon, at first I felt naked without one, but also felt confident in my ability to defend myself without one.

Currently I won't have a handgun in my house because of my autistic child. It is way to dangerous, but if he wasn't here I'm sure I'd have a weapon of some sort.

My only objection to firearms is the ease at which people can get them. You and I are familiar with their use, safety, and the harm they can do in the wrong hands, most americans are not.

My problem with the NRA, is that they are against almost any restrictions on gun control. There are people out there that have no psychological problems or criminal backgrounds, that shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a firearm. I wish we, as a society, could come up with a way to weed these people out of the gun owner group. Gun IQ test?

On the news tonight, there were 3 gun related deaths within 40 miles of where I live, 2 were accidental. This is the problem.

I don't remember PZ threatening anyone's life, just a fictional one at best.

PZ has the right, if not duty, to get people fired that make death threats. It is illegal and can be prosecuted. If the guy just gets fired he'll be lucky. Besides that, PZ clearly gave a warning on his website that he would do this to anyone making these kind of threats. So what's the problem?

One more thing. Excepting the western hemisphere, the UK has been standing next to us in most of our blunders, including Viet Nam where they delivered a lot of the napalm used. Also, many brits fought in NZ and Aussie units that were on the ground. So don't point fingers unless you live in France, then you can say that Iraq was a blunder by the U.S. and the allies that joined it.
