'clearthinker' - So would i be right in saying that you agree with the scientists who say that through the process of natural selection humans evolved from the simplest of life to the creatures we are now, and this took hundreds of millions of years.
Ok, making the (baseless) assumption that we have souls, at what point did we gain a soul? - As there must have been a time when a parent had no soul but the children did. Does this mean that your god had love and gave dominion to the child, but the parent was a 'simple animal' and a lesser creature?
Do you see how this SHOULD make a difference to your faith? (Doesn't fit in with 10 commandments either - Honour thy parent?)
Also, does this mean you don't believe in the adam and eve and noah's ark stories?

Thanks epeeist,
My language was woefully lazy and i now kinda see the redundancy in my question.
After all, all scientific theories can be seen as models of reality, not reality itself.

I don't want to derail the discussion, but...
I've always wondered if ToE (or parts of it) will be put in the same position as newtonian mechanics after einstein's work on relativity. So maybe a new scientific theory will come along that explains everything ToE does, but also irons out any inconsistencies (although i'm not aware of any in ToE atm). Would we still be right in saying ToE is right? (in the same way, can we call newtonian mechanics right - or just a very good low speed approximation)

I see 'clearthinker' has been and gone again, *sigh*.

For the last time atheism - NOT A FAITH, it's not even on the spectrum of faith's, it's just a convenient word that describes the fact that we don't defer our lifes or our personal responsibility to an imaginary elf in the sky.

Will you answer Steve? He's asked you many times, what is your position on evolution, do you accept the mountain of evidence that supports it?

Note: I do not give a toss about your beliefs - I want your opinion on it's scientific validity, if you feel it is lacking as a scientific theory, can you explain why, WITHOUT mentioning god, jebus, allah, thor or whoever?

When they confirm jesus hasn't returned, is it a command box, or is it like kids on a long car journey,
'Jesus back yet?'
'No'

'No'

Comment #193501 by Apathy personified on June 15, 2008 at 5:54 pm

The current British government have, over the last 10 years, taken the bulk of the science funding from independent bodies into politically controlled councils (that waste of fucking space the STFC - prime example).
This means we have politicians making science research and policy decisions - most of them having dropped sciences at 16 (so 30 years ago for most of them, at least).
I hope i'm not the only one who sees a problem....

clearthinker,
I, and everyone else, was only looking for clarification about your story, nothing more, so stop trying to play the victim card.
Thanks for the clarification - you cashed the cheque and used your overdraft facility - now i understand the story and everyone else does, there was no magic, just a high interest convenience available to customers of your particular bank.

I haven't been a desperado since i sold my sombrero.

My point is that you have lifted the term 'American Imperialism' from the letters page of 'Socialist Workers Weekly' or where ever and it is used as an anti Iraq invasion term and doesn't accurately describe the current situation on the ground or in the political sphere - For the latest anti American buzzwords you should always check the opinion pages of the guardian and then go nuts, but being anti - every american is technically xenophobic.

Also, i have noticed how you appear to have singled out thewhitepearl, juxtamonkey and corylus for a disproportionate amount of your own unique brand of 'criticism', why is this?

According to paradise lost (the true record of what really happened) god's son vanquished satans armies, really destroyed them, but that doesn't matter, as we have heaven now (there won't be any insurgents, don't worry)

We need to look to heaven's neighbour, hell, it's full of evil people, like satan, who have already attacked earth, and may do it again, it may also look to use the weapons of heaven that were smuggled out, just as we arrived (just a few seconds...)
We need to act now people, now.

JuxtaMonkey - You have a very good point about why 'clearthinker' comes here, though he may have slight masochistic tendancies also.

Clearthinker, the point about the cheque story is; Did you hand over the cheque, with the knowledge that the money wasn't in the account, and then only later, maybe even before or after it was cashed, some unknown strangers, some philanthropists of the night, paid money into your account?

Also, any one who uses the term 'American Imperialism', loses any argument by default, this proves you either lack any cognitive faculties to come up with your own opinions (which surprises me, after all, you've invented a god in that head of yours) or you are just a bit of a muppet.

Incidently, i thought it was, 'God moves (not works) in mysterious ways', as this allows a cheap gag about God not being able to dance, and if he can't dance then he ain't no friend of mine.

Incidently, having all the fundies locked away in churches praying the whole time....am i the only one who loves that idea? They should neglect everything else and pray, no more; sitting on education boards, lobbying parliament, preaching - just non-stop prayer (here's hoping they forget to eat)

adrianrf;
First, thanks for inflating my already oversized ego by saying, 'Apathy personified et al.', although i thought my post was probably the least coherent of those expressing reservations about 'athiest clubs' (name used for sake of argument, not to make any point).

Second, my point was that i'm uneasy with the concept of those clubs, not that i'm necessarily against them totally (i probably didn't make that clear in my post - sorry, my error). I think i explained why i'm against the idea, but if it's not clear i'm happy to clarify.

I agree that we need to stop the well financed and powerful religious lobbies from getting law changes to suit them and undermine everything that is good about modern societies.
I live in Britain, so my perspective may be different from yours, but i don't at the moment feel the need to join a club because of a belief i don't possess, but it's not inconceivable that i would join one in the future.

692. A word for nonbelievers

Comment #189750 by Apathy personified on June 7, 2008 at 6:40 am

Stories like this make me very uneasy.
I call myself an athiest as a title of convenience, but it in no way gives any clue to my real beliefs or opinions (except that i don't think there's a sky mum /dad, obviously).
My problem with religion comes from the fact that a) it's philosophy and basis are flawed and lack a real base in reality (other than in the imagination of believers) and b) what the actual organisations that promote these beliefe do, how they act.
They fact is, people join these churches and become loyal to them, this then starts to blind them to the truth, tends to harden or radicalise their beliefs, not healthy for anyone. Before you say, 'Us Athiests are too smart to fall for that', think, are we really?
Mob mentality can work in many ways and i fear that sometimes the talk of mass organisation of athiests can only lead down a similar path.
I agree that politically athiests will have cause to unite, to protect the secular nature of our countries legal and political framework, etc..
but starting big organisations where only athiests go and your only non-work friends are members, is that the way people want to go? If yes, fair enough, but shutting myself off from part of the world is not for me.

However, i love irony;
Sharon Stone talking about karma, then because of her gross offensive stupidity, losing all her marketable value in China is quite funny.

What isn't funny is blaming the Chinese government for an earthquake, what utter idiocy. Does she think that the tens of thousands of innocent civilians who died are to blame for what happens in tibet? That's like saying hurricane katrina was caused by US action at guantanamo bay, completely ridiculus and the absolute depth of stupidity.
