If one visits:
www.irelandofequals.com/
They do discuss that sinn fein's goals are the unification of Ireland among other things, including: The aspirations of the 1916 Proclamation, that of a democratic socialist republic, an Ireland of equals.
What I don't understand is what you guys are arguing about. Is someone worried that if Ireland is one country, they will become socialist? So?

Honestly I don't think anything is going to work with some of these clowns unless the west stops being (as Fanusi would say) so tolerant of their behaviours.

You're probably right, whatever the reason, it does seem to be popular to be a radical muslim among the islamic youth, which is going to be a problem for perhaps decades in the west. I suppose it's easy for an iman to say, "look what the americans are doing to the land of your ancestors" and get a knee-jerk reaction. I just hope enough of them get an education that gives them a different way to look at the world.

I can see students being radical. Usually this means turning away from what their parents taught them, or against the established norms that society has pushed on them. These guys take it in an opposite direction and become more religious and more hate filled. It would be like finding the Klan well established in universities in the U.S.

Joe, I'm glad allah has forbidden you to eat carrion. I would think that you could figure out that road kill isn't good for you all by yourself, but if you need a religious law to keep you from competing with the vultures, so be it. The rest of us just kinda know.

I think the only reason Blumenthal even mentions Hitchens, is because it will give his blog/video more media coverage and get it on sites like this one. I would think the "holocaust denier" would do it, but how many people have ever heard of Irving? Just historians mostly, and people who remember when he was jailed, and Hitch was right to protest that.

I don't understand this feminist argument you guys are having, I'm an egalitarian myself, so I try to treat everyone the same and require others to do so. I get in arguments with my Pakistani friend all the time about how he treats his wife (she an MD, he works at a mini mart). I don't think he'll ever get it, until she splits. Well back to "work". Meantime, I'm working on an old desktop w/ win 98, so I don't like being on line much. I'm going to get a new desktop tomorrow, so maybe I'll be up and running again soon (metaphorically that is). You have an interesting take on this, and I see your point. I'll have to give it some thought, as you did, and see where I land. I've always liked the metaphor, so it may be difficult to change my mind. We shall see, I'm pulling Richard's book off the shelf....now.

I do not see "Climbing Mt. Improbable" as a metaphor that gives an incorrect view of evolution. I think that the odds of one particular organism existing is improbable. Look at the platypus, a very improbable animal, and yet it climbed the mountain and exists. That's what makes evolution and natural selection cool. Remember when Richard programmed his, I think, 486 to put out possible computer organisms evolving from one. The end result was improbable at the beginning, a good metaphor I think.

I have an in-law that argues that Timothy McVeigh (the OK city bomber) was a soldier in a war against the U.S. Government and should have been treated a a POW. He also states that McVeigh didn't murder all those people because they were killed in war. I guess some people define "soldier" differently than I do. To each his/her own.

You're right, of course. I guess my only explanation is, for example, if a woman came on here and related an experience she had with being raped, then someone implied it didn't happen, or was she the one in the corner of some video licking her own piss, I would feel she'd be justifiably enraged. There are some limits, or maybe not to some people. I think I'll move on and if someone does relate something like that, I hope I'm not the one dishing it out.

They give you little "cat naps" just not long ones, 5 minutes or so, it is more effective that way. It's the duration of how long they can keep at it that is the key. Yes, I think I did suffer some personality disorders, can't you tell? I don't really want to get into that here, but I'd rather have a few issues than be dead. That's just me though.

I have gone through sleep deprivation, don't jump to conclusions, 9 days of it. It was a bitch indeed. The difference, I suppose, is that I'm here to discuss it, and those who are stoned to death aren't. Btw, the U.S. is not the only country that uses this kind of torture. Personally I'm against all kinds of torture and the death penalty. My only points are 1) the finality of stoning, 2) the difference between adultery, and say blowing up a school with children inside.

I don't know. Of course, one can be impressive intellectually in the areas you mentioned, but to really know what is going on with the planet/universe, I don't see how you could avoid the natural sciences. It is like, when Richard talks about how much more beautiful things (a flower for example) are, if you can understand how they function, how they became what they are, and their purpose. When polymaths come to my mind, we talked of Jefferson and Da Vinci, they all were students of the natural sciences. To me it's part of the definition, but I might be subjectively looking at this.
