The problem with the story was the intimidation was so heavy handed this became the story, and the original point of the story- the exploitation of it's members was lost. But as the program tried to suggest, perhaps this was their (the scientologists) tactic.I must say I liked the way he was prepared to ball back at them. It probablly doesn't happen to the control freak wankers very often.

The point I was making on your comment was we do not need evolution to deny evidence of God.You suggested that we needed to do the leg work on the subject.I suggest all the onus of proof is on them.
Re thread - They could have just said what is evolution? ,never heard of it. Where is your evidence of god.
It was your comment was it not that said we need to do the leg work.
The weakness of religion is not the sophistication of the opponents arguments, but the complete stupidity of it's own arguments.
The debate is childs play. The only difficulty is the ability of the religous to live in a fantasy world free from any form of logical debate. Logic can never win them over.

The psychologist says that if you follow what Richard says everyone would have been immoral before the enligthenment and then accuses him of been philosophically naive and not a deep thinker.
Which Atheist including Richard has ever said you need to be rational to be moral? Plenty of xians think atheists are immoral but I have never heard an atheist condem the irrational as immoral.
He is clearly no intellectual thinker.
They are also forgetting one important point . There is no god.
723. The Debate: Can We Live by Reason Alone?
Comment #39793 by the great teapot on May 12, 2007 at 12:26 am
Unlike many above I thought this was one of the best interviewers Richard has had. He acted as devils advocate so that Richard could get his points across and then sat back and allowed Richard to give full answers to his questions.A child would not have done that.
I enjoyed it.
Shuggy, Richard did say if he were God he would want people to love him, that suprised me too, but he didn't say he would deny them eternal life or torture them for eternity if they didn't.
But I agree the panel trotted out the usual nonsense.
The woman says love is the basis of religious faith- is it? That surely then means God is a man made concept to achieve Love.
If God exists surely he is the sole Basis of religious faith, after that Religion is whatever he wants it to be or am I being thick.
And the chap who says that the Bible is part of what has created the Zeitgeist of today, why does he presume that Richard would deny this, Richard would agree and has agreed with him. The point is the Bible was also a reflection of the Zeitgeist 2000-3000 years ago. (and also the fact that geist means spirit in german is completely irrelevant, we could just as easily say mood of the times)

Religion sucks because it is an irrational jump to an unlikely concnclusion. If you point this out alone and do not bring all the side issues in to play anything they have to say in their defense just looks plain stupid.

why do you go to church?
As an atheist all my life I have never gone to church of my own volition.
However i did go to church for 4 years when I was dating a Roman Catholic girlfriend.
(her ex was a priest so she initially wanted me to go to quash rumours)
It was during these visits and actually listening to bible readings (something few others in the church appeared to be doing) that my ambivalence turned into active dislike.
So that could be another reason why he is going to church.

Re comment 120 by Cheshire cat.
Using the term child abuse denigrates actual child abuse.
I could not agree more. The two are so incomparable to most people that I think this similie opens anything else Richard Dawkins has to say up to ridicule. While it is wrong to call a child Catholic, marxist etc to compare it with rape and physical abuse is abhorent.
I have often heard it said that having your house burgaled (spelling?) and ransacked is similar to being raped.
Well house burgalry has happened to me twice and I can safely say I would prefer it to physical abuse anyday. People who prize personal possesions or abstract intellectual values over actual bodily and psycological harm need their priorities sorting and quick.
