Ruht
That was not an apology, you just quoted the Bible back at me
This really sickens me that you can be so cold and absent from real life, I gave you the chance to apologise and you just spat some Biblical phrases at me that mean nothing.
Really, when your best friend is raped and that you could do nothing about it I think you may be in a better position think about just how offended I am by your suggestion that I am not "saved" or "born of God".
I am not usually one to say bad things about people, I always see if I can look for the best in them, but you I will make an exception for, there is nothing good in you at all

So the Bible says things like
Deuteronomy 22:13
" 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. [c] He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
Or Judges 19 where its ok to rape women - especially virgin daughters - rather than your male house guests
Word of God? No, horrible words of vile and disgusting men who didn't know any better
What is this for goodness sake?
"Sounds like women were property to me."
That's because your 'ears' do not 'hear' properly, apparently.
One, you seem to know nothing about rape so stop talking about it like you do
Two, treat women better than that
Three, stop using the Bible to justify it, capital letters are not helping either, if you happen to agree with what disgustingly vile books like Deuteronomy, Leviticus, Judges, Genesis etc then I don't have much hope or respect for you
Please tell me I have got this all wrong about you, I don't mind admitting I am wrong or even apologising for perhaps getting the wrong end of the stick, but you wrote some things I found very offensive and I wont stand for it

Dear old Mit, what can I say?
"There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us. If so, they are at odds with the nation's founders
Ermmm am I reading this wrong or is Mit thinking that the founding fathers didn't want to separate religion and state?
These radical Islamists do their preaching not by reason or example,
Oh but you do huh Mitt? Preaching is not reasonable in a any religion as far as I remember
Incidentally, I wonder what a radical Mormon would do- I MUST MARRY MORE WOMEN, I WILL, GOD SAYS IT SHOULD BE LIKE THIS, INFIDELS MUST LET ME HAVE THEIR WOMEN, I'LL MARRY THEM ALL MWWWHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
This election is a bad one kids, my sympathies are with you - at least we have a good Prime Minister over here to keep the future American President in check if over steps the mark....oh balls!

"Do you feel that intimidated?" Downey asked. "Do you feel so intimidated by our presence? Do you feel so intimidated that you can't even allow us to participate as a fellow citizen?"
"So many people who I work with on a daily basis, who are really struggling with faith, look and say, 'You know what? I'm embarrassed,'" said Morris.
"Because you're an atheist, you're trying to say therefore we're going to sabotage what is a holiday, a religious holiday.
This says it all for me- People are struggling their faith we need to brainwash them some more, how dare you give them ideas and the right to think for themselves?!! Oh and why are you insulting MY religion, it deserves more respect cos its HOLY!

But wasn't he taking orders from the Pope? The Pope laid down those guidelines and told his evil henchmen to go off and spread the message. I don't doubt the archbishop deserves punishment, but the Pope sent him there to do it.

I went for the Pope, out of the lot of them, he is the biggest cause of fear, misery and death on a global scale
Chuck, Dinesh, Dawkins(!) The General, Westboro - It would help their popularity and egos too much and I dont want them to have the credit, especially that miscreant Dawkins! :)
The religious idiots are only technically taking orders from "on high" and Joyce Pratt is just plain stupid and is too small scale
The pope is large scale, his ego would not be boosted and I think it disgraces him more than it would the others, so please don't let Dinesh win, he would love it and lord (laud- gettit?) it too much

Jack, take no heed of Don_Quix's prophesy, for he only heard the half of it- for it is written in the back pages of Snorry's favourite scrap book - Thor will pop along before heading off to Ragnerok , hurl his hammer and few Norwegian obscenities at Jesus and Jack will not be doomed!
This article is scary - I really have a problem with this imaginary authority IDers think they deserve when it comes to education. Scientists work very hard to disprove their work, its not like they are making it all up and these idiots come along claiming magic and gods are the answer to something they obviously don't understand. This poor Ms. Comer is really being picked on and I abhor it - this is grounds for unfair dismissal and I hope she fights it. This article is right, it is a step further back to the dark ages if this is going to become the norm.

I remember a story my dad told me about the Star Trek film with the whales in it, when asked what he thought of the film his work colleague turned to him and said "Daft, completely not real- you can't fit 2 humpback whales in a spaceship!"
I loved the fact he accepted all the time travelling, spaceships with lasers, aliens etc. But no, whales in a spaceship - not going to happen!

Santa nailed to a cross, reminds me of one Christmas where I used to live with my folks.
There is a small shopping mall in the town centre and to sort of jazz it up a bit there is this glass tower that rises up beside it. So they managed to fit Santa's sleigh at the top of it with Santa supposedly climbing down a rope to deliver pressies. How ever, fake Santa slips off and the rope get caught around his neck leaving him hanging there on display. This happened during the busiest period leading up to xmas so there are all these kids walking past this glass tower with Santa swinging from his sleigh, caused mayhem it really did!

Brian you are right, this cannot go unnoticed, Northern Bright, prepare to be tickled for your heathen behaviour!
I think I understand- you could not get my dad to read this stuff (well, not without a lengthy discussion!) yet my mum, brother or me will devour it happily and let it all go in. With my Dad it ends and finishes with goblins etc - he just isnt that interested and never will be - though to his credit he gave Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter a go and sort of enjoyed them. He likes crime or spy novels because I think its more realistic settings for him - something he can get his head around
AllanW I think dad would agree with you, something like "gyptians" is a word that would get him annoyed too and I think I understand where you are coming from. Well done for reading them at least!
The reason why these things appeal to me is that I guess I am susceptible to much weirdness - I think Douglas Adams is to blame here and Tolkien as well for good measure. I like being introduced to weird stuff like Pullman, its got that addictive quality for me, I guess its like religion, everyone has their own version of it and bits of it can be argued over or agreed with. Thankfully this only results in the apostates getting tickled for their naughty doings! :)

Infallible?
Jesus is a myth for starters, there is no evidence for his existence other than the Bible - I can't see that as a justification for being infallible
Fides, the Pope and the Vatican are constantly making fallible, human mistakes - I don't have repeat their treatment of AIDS victims who are currently suffering because of the damage they have done. The Pope and the history of the Vatican is based on the actions of human men (well, ok they have to have that stupid ceremony to check the Pope's dangly bits are male after those naughty women caused all that trouble!) - that's it - prove to me that evil organisation is in anyway connected to the will/word of a deity and I would take them more seriously. The Pope has no more connection to God than Mohammed the Teddy Bear has to Allah.
Why do you approve of the Pope after all he has done to this world?

Hmm this is rather thought provoking!
So, lets see if I can get this straight
I couldn't care less what Clinton got up to, that bit is just sex in private - no problem
Can people fall in love with more than one person, sure they can, again I see no problem with this
Jealousy, not something I generally go in for, I'd be lying if I said I didn't get jealous but for me I think it is simply about honesty. If I am with someone who wants to be with me then happy Philip, I can do that, if someone realises they don't want to be with me, then please tell me and stop messing around with my affections.
I was with someone a while back now who quite happily used me for the gullible idiot that I can be. My nature is to be honest and kind, that's just who I am, I am rubbish at being ruthless! This girl was telling me all the right things, she was intelligent, witty and a lot of fun to be with, heck she even told me she loved me. She just refrained from telling me she hated my friends, my family and pretty much me as well - plus she was sleeping with another man when I wasn't around. She only kept me around for the sex when this other bloke wasn't there.
What I am hopefully stabbing at here is that I couldn't really care less that she was sleeping with someone else, she loved her romping and that was her wont. I wasn't even jealous when I found out. My biggest problem was that she was not honest with me - I completely agree with everything Professor Dawkins has written in this article - but surely honesty counts for something? That girl was not my property, I did not own her, there was not mystical bond that kept us chained together, my justification for being just a little bit hacked off is because she lied to me. Or am I being silly about this?

871. Islam and the modern world don't mix
Comment #91353 by Philip1978 on November 28, 2007 at 5:45 am
Thankfully the number of politicians I have been drunk with is zero! :)
I sort of agree with you there, but don't you think the government and people like Bunglawala are arsing the situation up considerably and not helping in the slightest bit? Giving credence to such idiotic rubbish only allows for people like Abu Hamza to keep claiming he is a victim and demanding all sorts of rights that he doesnt deserve.
You are absolutely right, this is ruining our politics, I hope I got this right (please correct me if I am wrong), Fanusi is saying that the influence of Islam - the want to have Sharia Law in place of British Law etc- should be ousted now. I understand your concerns about how it could divide things wildly but from my understanding of the situation pandering to and giving way to all these attempts to undermine British Law is dangerous. I am no BNP fanatic, neither do I wish harm to come to anyone but if this rubbish continues other innocent people will be affected.
Being diplomatic as I can be I rather feel that you and Fanusi have similar points of view on this, I think that Fanusi is just more concerned about the outcome of the situation and so am I. I too grew up in a relatively quiet area, now look at High Wycombe and tell me the difference to how it was a good 20 years ago.
Islam has made the changes, more demands are being made for their religious rights to be "honoured"
Islam is being perceived differently, if it wasn't for the likes of Sam Harris or Professor Dawkins - even you can make a difference- people would not be perceiving it in the same way. Islam will never change- it is a constant- people's views on it however are changing and the submissive respect that it once had is not the same any more.
I rather feel the best way is to stand up to it, surely you know how to deal with a bully? You don't let the bully win, you teach them the error of their ways by showing them they are not allowed to dominate and that there are reasonable alternatives despite what they think they can demand. Religious bullying has to stop, I am sick of hearing about how I should respect a religion that encourages violence and submission to a startlingly bad degree if read the wrong way. Then you have people like Bunglawala or Tony Blair or Midlands Police force making the situation more difficult - people like Bunglawala especially who say one thing and the other claiming they are moderates and that Islam is peace etc. Its bollocks, it is simply giving the bully more ammunition and authority and this bothers me.
I don't want the Christians gaining any ground in this either, its religion against religion - how can they agree on anything when they revere different gods? It would just give credence to something completely pointless - I would rather this is sorted out so religious authority has no credibility in important matters.
Hope that explains things a bit more, I think you have a good set of points there but don't be so hard on Fanusi as I think he also has got something very serious and helpful to say about how things look.
Can't we all just be friends? :)

I am actually inclined to agree with Fanusi on this one, with idiots like Bunglawala around obfuscating to his heart's desire I can't see things improving.
Christianity etc has been mellowed to a certain degree out here, Islam I feel will not mellow for a heck of long time -its too volatile and strict to want to. Plus it is still encouraging hate around the country - look at those mosques that were recently investigated just for one example. They are still being encouraged to hate anything that is not Islam and that should worry you. This is not Daily Mail type knee jerk reaction, this is a very real threat.
Obviously I still hold hope that things will improve and its always possible it can. It is clear that some Muslims are slowly coming around to discarding the strict rules Islam imposes, but the majority still are still highly influenced and willing to follow.
I went to school with some of those bomb makers who were caught in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire - It was a good school that I think produced very level headed pupils (Modest Me!)Yet a few of those students were seen celebrating the 9/11 disaster when it happened, then you see a couple of them were arrested a few years later. Ok, this is just one example but something tells me that integration has still got a long way to go and Fanusi is right when he says that if we do not engage in a stiff fight for minds now, trouble will continue to brew.
People like Bunglawala should not have the majority opinion and influence in this country spouting the rubbish they do, they are dangerous bullies who need to be seen for what they are and that these young men should not be following in their footsteps.

I actually thought this article was very good, I totally agree that these idiots cannot see the barbaric and oppressive effect their religion has and fob it all off with ridiculous claims of insults to their "honour".
It doesn't matter how nasty or violent the reaction, it doesn't matter how insignificant the crime is- they have the right to kill, maim and destroy everything.
Fanusi, I agree with you there old friend, people like that Inayat Bunglawala are a real danger to society. They lie, obfuscate and generally get away with saying shit like that because of this supposed authority that his religion allows. They say one thing then the other, picking and choosing more ingenious ways to be a complete hypocrite. Makes me shudder it really does, good article though, very thought provoking

Frankus1122,
All you have to do is keep reminding them its a movie and that if you had wanted to subvert their child's religion, wouldn't you have been more subtle about it? If necessary, show them what you have been teaching them - you sound like a perfectly fair and capable person. If anything its the parent's fault for getting so ridiculously wound up about it all.
If you have already been through the book with the children, how is the movie going to hurt?
This is your job is it not? You are to educate 7th graders in English and Philip Pullman has written a children's book which has been deemed well written enough for 7th graders to be able to understand, enjoy and discover the joys of learning about literature ( I have a degree in English and History here so I am completely bias!!)
You are not a religious educator, you are an English teacher, otherwise you would have applied for the job. Keep telling the parents that you simply want to teach them that subject and not religion.
My advice is be yourself, act professionally and responsibly in front of the parents and I can't see what more you can do, I hope it all goes well for you

Must...not...swear....
Creationists really are dangerous people- I think this line from the article sums it up for me
"Dad, how'd these fossils get here?" asked Jess, 7, looking up from his own Ziploc bag full of specimens.
Whitmore, who was wearing a suede cowboy hat, answered in a cowboy manner — laconic but certain.
"From the flood," he said.
I really dont think I have to say much more other than this man has lied to his son and filled his head with ignorance and nonsense. Lying to ones self is one thing, lying to your kids and helping them grow up in the same idiotic fashion is reprehensible.
Plus I just love the fact they have all the evidence to show that their stupid book is all shapes, shades and sizes of WRONG and yet they dance around so happily in their delusion - I personally find it much more exciting that something could be 450 million years old rather that a piffling 6000!

Right Ruht, here goes!
Zeus just appeared to me in a vision,(Cheers for organising this Quetz, I owe you one!) and in His infinite wisdom, to explained to me that you have brown eyes and blonde hair. Further more he told me that your wife is sleeping with another woman and will be divorcing you next Tuesday at 5 o clock in the afternoon.
There you go, argue with that if you like, you obviously can't because Zeus told me it was true and so therefore it is!
Can you see any flaws in my reasoning here? Can you see that I would actually need evidence to back up my rather amazing assertions? I dont know you, I have never met you, I don't even know if you are married and yet all I need to do is claim a deity made it possible and you, by your own similar arguments, cannot get back at me after that.
Why?
Easy
You could claim your eye colour is different, I could simply say that Zeus made you think that and that the true colour is what I say it is. You could say you are not married etc, I would still be able to use the most fantastic circular arguments till you are blue in the face! :)
I could go on like that ad infinitum, it just requires me to keep asserting that Zeus is real and has wisdom beyond yours.
Can you see any similarity between your assertions that your God exists and has designed everything and my rather ridiculous assertions about you?
If you can, excellent, if not, I may have to kindly suggest that you are in fact a looney! :)

Then if we are feeling really daring all we need to do is to work out exactly how improbable it is, feed that figure into the finite improbability generator we just picked up et voila we can now dispense with all that tedious mucking about in hyperspace!

887. Why Science Will Triumph Only When Theory Becomes Law
Comment #89852 by Philip1978 on November 22, 2007 at 1:14 am
I love this never ending pattern of Reason vs Figments of people's imagination, I am sorry to sound so sarcastic but I can't help it.
Ruht,Biz, how can you honestly confirm that some things on this earth are the result of your God's interference? Do you think you are irreducibly complex? I know I am not, I can prove it - I have a very mild form of something called Fragile X, go look it up and then get back to me on just how wonderful your God is at designing things.
Tell you what while you are at it, go ask your God why he designs things like worms that tunnel into children's eyes to make them go blind.
Better yet, go ask your God why you need any medical attention at all, cos after all He designed you!
Oh, so perhaps humans are not perfect after all, hmm lets go with the bigger picture, the Universe perhaps, there is a nice big place. So tell me why did your God make so much destructive stuff out there- I mean he has doomed this planet to die out one day with the sun fizzling out of existence, or perhaps a bit sooner if some huge bastard asteroid makes a nice mess of us. Better yet, a nice black hole- kudos again to your God for making those, they really help things get destroyed!
Thinking about the end of the world or nearly all life as we know it can be destroyed by those lovely fanatical people out there who do not believe in the same God as you, but are equally certain of their God's existence - enough so that they would not hesitate to throw a few nuclear bombs around or fly planes into buildings
Hell, why don't I even attack the Bible while I am here, if you believe in the Genesis story, please explain, especially to Epeeist who managed to explain this to me, how Adam and Eve could have survived on an Earth that was barely a week old? The radiation and heat alone would have fried them, prove me wrong I dare you, explain to me how the rocks would have managed to be cooled in time!
Irreducible Complexity MY ARSE!
Sit there and nit pick with the most spurious things you can muster and everyone here who doesn't have an imaginary friend will come up with something that will counteract it. ID does not work, you can't make it work just by willing it to, its a waste of time.
I apologise if you think my sarcasm is directed towards your good selves, I promise I having a go at ID and the Gods behind it :)

Damn right I am going to tease you unless you promise to stay on!
Plus I can't cope with the thought of you going cold turkey again!
If this is the last, (which I heavily doubt- it would be like me giving up tea- I could do it for a while but the call of the kettle would become too strong!) then my dearest V all the best to you, I have thoroughly enjoyed your wit, intelligence and excellent choice of beverage drinking :)
Many thanks,

Looks like it has taken its toll on him, as Quetz has just verified he is a psycho, look what you did you evil man! :)

Guys and Gals
I am a little confused here, I can understand the cloning of most things like organs or stuff for stem cell research, that makes shed loads of sense to me. What I don't understand is why would someone want to actually create a proper full human clone, what would be the advantages of doing so?

What have I told you about using hard religion? I know how it all starts, you think you are ok on the soft religion, just a bit of theism now and again. But sooner or later, you start Idealising and thats when the blahing begins! Look at you man, mouth frothing, banging your head on the monitor like that, its not good for you or your monitor!
Come back to the light, write a book on atheism, it will make you froth less!! :)

Wow, thats some point of view you have there! I mean that in a friendly way I promise I am not going to jump on your back.
I think your arguments do carry a bit of weight here and there, but surely the accumulation of wealth and power is dominated and motivated by excessive religious belief?
You mention the crusades- didn't Pope Urban III (I think it was him, correct me if I am wrong) specifically rally people together under Christianity to go wipe out the Muslims out of the "Holy Land"? Yes, I guess the main intention of some of the supposedly "Christian" lads who went over there did so primarily to kill, rape, pillage and grab land but did so under the impression that they were doing it all in God's name - no matter how perverse their actions. I have heard that people were taken out of prisons and given full pardons if they went out and killed Muslims. The actions of the Vatican and all the nations who joined in were disgusting- of course they were motivated by wealth and land grabbing etc. But surely one of the primary reasons they went over there was to liberate the "Holy" land from people who didn't worship their God?
I think you are right in some ways, people like Bush are after oil etc and the art of warfare is getting to a staggeringly complex level. But think about the reasons why they go to war in the first place. Muslim extremists are only after one thing - convert the world to Islam or kill those who dont want to. How do you do that? I seems to me like Gorilla Warfare- Use your enemies weapons and resources against them, so consider how easy it would be for them to accumulate the right amount of cash to continue their religious war. Educate people, make them doctors, lawyers - high paid professions and then let them lose on a bus or drive a Range Rover into an aiport, fly a plane into a building - its easily done and its not too expensive if you are using the enemies tools.
I almost think Bush is on his own religious crusade - mask it all he likes with noise about "Terror", he is a Christian and he wants to have the dominating religion - I could be hideously wrong here and I dont mind admitting it but all the oil, space programs etc do cost money and do accumulate wealth but consider the one motivational ideology that keeps him going- God, apparently, is telling him to do it.
I dont doubt there is a lot of truth in what you say but I still reckon religion is a great and probably a primary motivator
This is open for discussion of course, just my reading of the situation, , what do you others think, am I barmy? :) (Silly question really hehehhe!)

Isn't this car abuse? Labelling a car a Muslim car is like calling it a Marxist car or something of the equivalent and should not be encouraged. Instead I insist that this car be a car of Muslim manufacturers! :)
