51. Better Know a Lobby - Atheism

Comment #240607 by SharonMcT on August 31, 2008 at 4:52 pm

I didn't think this particular bit on Colbert was funny, but I'm not sure it was meant to be laugh-out-loud. I think we're meant to be uncomfortable with that horrid song. I think one is supposed to look at it an an outsider would and see it for what it is. I think that is the message Colbert was trying to get across. He wanted his audience to look at that song and the arrogance of it in a way they are not used to if they are mindlessly singing along. If every time they hear that song and remember the discomfort of that moment in his "interview" then he's done what he set out to do.

I disagree. I think it's obviously contextual. I'll leave it to him to defend if he feels it necessary.

I have followed this entire exchange, among others, between Steve and Fanusi. If you prefer to look at a couple of posts for your understanding of what was meant, I can't help you.

Oh, brother. Steve's not calling Fanusi fundamentalist because he won't answer straight away. How you get that from this entire exchange, I'll never understand.

*sigh*

It almost sounds like parody.

This is what we are up against here in the bible belt of Canada. How utterly embarrassing.

I am not at all opposed to a little off-topic banter either. We all do it and we're all just as entitled.

I would not want the humourous digs to ever stop.

I am only opposed to one really old, really tired joke taking over every thread. Old, tired jokes are old and tired no matter who it is that keeps repeating them. That's all. We can all be guilty at some point, and hopefully we can handle a reminder without a lot of hurt feelings or taking things personally.

One of the things about someone like Diacanu or Cartomancer (among others) is that each post by them is a well-crafted piece that is new and fresh and fantastic each and every time.

People have disagreed with TWP before. It gets ugly. Maybe it's just not been worth it. A lot of people I have a lot of respect for fawn all over the cricket bat. It just makes it harder to bother when it could get blown way out of proportion and people start taking sides.

It just took one person with enough guts to speak up and then more people felt comfortable doing so.

That is often the way. Once people feel like "Wow, it's not just me" then it all comes out.

I vote with those who say the cricket bat has lost its lustre.

I actually like spam. I have been to the SPAM Museum in Austin Minnesota. Very cool place. But every once in awhile there is such a thing as too much spam. It's kinda like too much sugar. It gives you a tummy ache. :P

By now I think we can safely say that Joe has nothing to offer anyone. He cannot be intelligently engaged. It's sad, really. There was a valiant effort made by all the regular posters *applause*, but he's just beyond hope. He cannot engage in a rational debate with intelligent human beings.

Why are all of you such bitter people? It is so obvious that you have no happiness in your life. Your hearts are empty. Jesus can fill this void. Just trust in him. There has been something done to you in the past that is not enabling you to trust and have faith in a loving and all powerful God. Overcome this. You can do it. You have the free will to change your life today, for the better.

You are a very bad advert for your worldview. I've been following along. You've certainly convinced me that xtianity offers nothing but ignorance and arrogance. Think of all the agnostics you've scared off. Maybe you should think about how your God might choose to punish you for actually frightening people away from your religion.

I have "trolled" you as well.

Comment #191647 by SharonMcT on June 11, 2008 at 11:57 am

I've very much enjoyed this comment thread. As usual I have learned a lot, and laughed a loT.

I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in about why txp can't let go his delusion. I think it's all about delusions of grandeur. If he gives up his beliefs, it will mean that he is no longer the very special being that he wants to be so desperately.

My theory is it ties in with his "Supernatural Conspiracy Theory View" as Steve put it, and his reasons for not sharing his "evidence". Only he knows what god really wants. He is one of the very special few chosen ones who will be at jesus's right hand at the rapture. If he explains why it is that he is this very special person (even if anyone else could possibly understand the sheer brilliance and sophistication of it), he will no longer be special. He has a secret. If everyone knows the secret, he won't be special. Just trust him that it's a very important secret. ;)

God has some really great important things in store, just for txp. The "ultimate" authority has singled him out for special understanding. Why can't we all just see that? ;P

No one can take that specialness away from him. He will not allow it, because if he did, he'd just be like any other ordinary human being with a finite lifespan with which to accomplish their mudane natural goals.

However, such driving forces in keeping Religion alive as indoctrination of children, the pushing of their so-called moral monopoly, special tax treatment, etc. are the reasons why many atheists see the vision of Religion being confined to consenting adults in their private lives as an impossibility.

Cartomancer:

And even if there is difference, why is that a basis for discrimination? It would have to be an extreme and significantly dangerous difference - so dangerous that it would almost certainly be blatantly apparent already. If heterosexuals really were a threat to social stability it would probably have been made manifest by now.

Exactly! Well said.
