51. God Answers Prayers Of Paralyzed Little Boy: 'No' Says God

Comment #60857 by nickthelight on August 3, 2007 at 2:37 am

Dear Lord....

Please bless the doctors and scientists and give them a guiding hand in their work on stem cell regeneration so I may one day walk again.

Amen,

Timmy.

Very interesting. The BBC did a documentary on the LHC as part of it's 'Horizon' series. It was on google video but the BBC have been getting anal of late and they keep making google take their stuff down. I pay my licence fee damn it!

56. In defense of dangerous ideas

Comment #58195 by nickthelight on July 24, 2007 at 1:52 am

Why are so many people disturbed by Mr Pinkers remarks regarding homosexuality? Such reactions kind of prove his point.

Also; since there is no evolutionary advantage to homosexuality, and in fact it is a great disadvangate if your a gene, why is it not an abnormality? This in itself has nothing to do with our social perceptions of homosexuals.

57. Won't anyone stand up for God?

"....Why has no one joined in the battle against these warriors for atheism? Where are the Defenders of the Faith that they ridicule?"

There sat at home embarrassed by the rubbish the people at the Daily Mail write.

60. I Don't Believe in Atheists

Comment #46097 by nickthelight on May 30, 2007 at 7:49 am

Essentially a week argument as he links religion and theology together like a zip. Most religious people don't care for theology and take religion as a true, accurate and tangible record of historical events. The Bible was written by a man, a mortal man.
He also seeks to give himself, like many religious apologists before him, wiggle room by attempting to redefine what religion and faith are.
...."Professed faith—what we say we believe—is not faith. It is an expression of loyalty to a community, to our tribe. Faith is what we do. This is real faith".

"Faith is what I kill for dogma is what I die for".

The lofty clouds that the likes of Hedges and his theological peers seat themselves upon are a distant land of long words and slippery definitions that most if not all the 1 Billion Muslims in the world have no comprehension of and such they will continue to take the teachings of an imaginary man in the sky very literally.

61. I'm Sure God is Scared

Comment #44814 by nickthelight on May 25, 2007 at 10:35 am

I like Hitchens and most if what he has to say I find interesting. But I do agree with the author that in some cases Hitchens is rude and offensive just for the sake of it. I thought the stripper analogy was particularly poignant. I'll still buy his book though!

62. Baby's 'miracle' recovery in British hospital to give Malta its first saint

Comment #44645 by nickthelight on May 25, 2007 at 6:14 am

If there was a 90% chance of death then there was a 10% of survival. Although slim, obviously enough, given the child survived. Here is a classic example of the 'God of the gaps' theory. Even this 10% is, although paradoxical, 100% more likely than supernatural intervention!
Can we presume that there have been many unanswered prayers to this 'saint'. They must be fucking seething!

63. Would the World Be Safer Without Religion?

Comment #43714 by nickthelight on May 22, 2007 at 10:47 am

Rubbish. The author states that "the Holy Land fighting was (is!) mainly about land, and who it's been promised to". Promised by whom? An imaginary man in the sky!

In the concluding paragraph the author says that we ..."must work to make belief sincere" SINCERE!! You can't get much more sincere than blowing yourself up!

Comment #38494 by nickthelight on May 8, 2007 at 10:41 am

don malvado...

I would under no circumstance vote for a theist as they would go to war on God's behalf. I'd rather go to war for oil, at least that's tangible.

"I would vote for a pro-war, religious person over an anti-war atheist" - Hitchens. I find that an odd thing to say.

67. How multiculturalism is betraying women

Comment #37043 by nickthelight on May 3, 2007 at 8:45 am

Why are we blaming multiculturalism for this, when will the media get a spine and say it like it is? It's Islam not multiculturalism which is to blame. Many cultures have existed in this 'multicultural' society for generations. Australians, Kiwis, South Africans, French, Spanish, Italians…the list goes on. Only when the barbarism of the Koran is involved do we hear about the problem of multiculturalism.

68. The God Delusion

Comment #36401 by nickthelight on May 1, 2007 at 3:44 am

The barbarism of primitive societies is present precisely because they are primitive. Their compassion is stifled by their desire for redemption whatever the cost to others. Religion is selfish. Saudi Arabian morality is static as it's based on a book which has not been updated to reflect the modern world.

69. Darwin nearly failed to evolve in print

Comment #35129 by nickthelight on April 26, 2007 at 9:45 am

It is a pity that the shifting moral zeitgeist that we hear so much about cannot be applied to religious thought. The Rev Whitwell Elwin states..."Darwin's theories were so farfetched, prejudiced and badly argued that right-thinking members of the public would never believe them..." So far fetched? -my word has the man thought about what his 'good book' actually claims?! ha ha! Hilarious, at least it would be if it wasn't so tragic and still so true of many 'men of the cloth'

70. Atheism isn't the final word

Comment #32534 by nickthelight on April 17, 2007 at 10:05 am

The author clearly hasn't read any of the books he mentions in his opening rant.
The number of books covering pseudoscience's such as astrology, dream interpretation and faith healing far outnumber the total number of books for the counter argument against religion. Perhaps he should save his criticism for books one hopes he regards as ridiculous in their claims as I do the claims of all faiths.

Comment #28592 by nickthelight on March 30, 2007 at 3:23 am

....."The Vatican also requires that a miracle attributed to his intercession be confirmed, before he can be beatified -- the last formal step before possible sainthood".

The last FORMAL step! I'd like very much like to know what the others are, surely they must be empirical as there is apparently a tangible result (at lest for the nun) therefore the scientific and especially the medical community would be very interested!!! Prayer on the NHS- hmmmm. REFORM NOW!

76. The Fifth Flea!

Comment #28202 by nickthelight on March 28, 2007 at 10:22 am

I can remember as a child being told by my mother that there was a pot of gold buried at the end of a rainbow. I never asked her which end.

Dawkins has been criticized for 'preaching to the choir'. What on earth are there books for? The people who read them, as Dawkins has so rightly pointed out, tiptoe around the orbit of science when talking to rational humans. In which case who in the rational camp will read these and how will it strengthen or further the argument of the belivers?

This sounds like the digital age version of "EARN £££ IN YOUR SPARE TIME"! Work from home! *Must have own computer.

It used to be packing envelopes, now its searching through incredibly boring documents of information most users will have no knowledge of. Who guarantees accuracy and integrity?

Comment #27696 by nickthelight on March 26, 2007 at 7:07 am

I don't believe a word of this. Sounds like utter nonsense, as if these villagers can ascertain the significance and relevance purporting to the spacing or thickness of black lines to mean evil. Rubbish. Yahoo is pulling our legs.

79. If only gay sex caused global warming

Comment #27166 by nickthelight on March 23, 2007 at 10:30 am

Phaderus,

You make some interesting observations, however I feel you fail to address several key factors;
1) what is in it for these men to make these claims?
2) They have not made up this evidence and it has been verified by independent scientists, so why is it largely ignored?
3) Humans and our industry are well down the list of significant CO2 contributors.
4) The sunspots; read up on this if you wish but it's no coincidence.

I'm not saying I know if it's 'really' happening or not, but I like to hear all sides of an argument. And why they are being made.

81. Germany Cites Koran in Rejecting Divorce

Comment #27144 by nickthelight on March 23, 2007 at 9:24 am

Seems to me that many women would rather suffer years of beatings than simply denounce their religion, and live a rational existence.

Many Catholics were burnt at the stake in England during the middle ages; all they had to do was disown their catholicism. Instead they preferred to burn to death. Such is the powerof delusion.

"Visions" and other personal experiences of God seem astonishing to the beholder, but "the formidable power of the brain's simulation software... is well capable of constructing 'visions' and 'visitations' of the utmost veridical power."

For those of us who have read 'The God Delusion' you will be aware of a passage where Dr Dawkins describes a plastic mask that rotates on his mantlepiece, saying that when viewed from the rear the face looks like it's 'coming out' at you...well i found this on Youtube-check it!!

86. James Cameron finds grave of Jesus & Son

Comment #23262 by nickthelight on February 27, 2007 at 8:51 am

Ha ha, this sounds to me like an international publicity stunt, designed to further James Cameron's career by using what some may view as a controversial issue. No doubt there will be a film to accompany this in the near future a la 'The Da Vinci Code'

I like the bit about the 'Holy Family' this conjures up images of a Sopranos family living in a hut whilst the head of the family buggers about performing 'miracles'.

87. Believing Scripture but Playing by Science's Rules

Comment #22003 by nickthelight on February 12, 2007 at 8:43 am

.....paleontology are one "paradigm" for studying the past, and Scripture is another.

This stance is nothing but intellectual disambiguation without the possibility of factual resolution; ipso facto!, that would no doubt have Plato turning in his grave. The very idea that you can study to a finite degree a subject in fact and then profess another 'thought pattern' is no different to Stephen Hawking stating his cosmological theories may not be applicable at a given time because from the astrological perspective 'mars is not in line with Saturn' for example.

Science and pseudoscience, square pegs and round holes.

88. Blashpemy Challenge Interview

Comment #20093 by nickthelight on January 31, 2007 at 10:25 am

I don't think an issue should be made regarding "is it or is it not ridicule", but rather we should be grateful that the whole issue of one's right to challenge religious ideology, and the mainstream media attention it attracts, is taking place so vehemently. May this movement continue to raise the consciousness and encourage people to 'come out'.

90. Former exec in Irvine says he was fired over religion

Comment #18963 by nickthelight on January 24, 2007 at 3:20 am

A frightening example of fundamental Christian fascism. It puzzles me that a country such as the United States - founded on secular values could have become so distorted. The founding forefathers will be turning in their graves (that's a figure of speech only!)

It seems that these attitudes are once again (the first; being black American segregation) being tolerated in the US. I am not aware of the frequency of such cases but I bet this is not an isolated case. The consciousness of others needs to be raised to a level where it is understood that it is not demonstrable to the faith of others to disagree or not believe.

91. 'God Is Not a Moderate'

Comment #18797 by nickthelight on January 23, 2007 at 3:26 am

Perhaps the term 'lying' should be substituted for 'gross, unsubstantiated myth' whereas the theories Mr Harris purveys are based on a century and a half of buttressed evidence to establish the reasons for our existence and as a by-product of that undermine the main point made throughout the bible - which is, we should not forget the route of this argument; God made us. Ha haha.

92. Halting progress

Comment #17010 by nickthelight on January 10, 2007 at 4:38 am

I agree with the general theory. However in the example given (a B&B) the owner of the business, as it is his/her home should be aloud to let into his/her home whoever he/she does or dosn't want. If that means not letting in gay/black/woman etc...then that is their right.

93. A Christmas thunderbolt for the arch-enemy of religion

Comment #15121 by nickthelight on December 29, 2006 at 3:28 am

Dear God

For the almighty you really do present a woolly-headed self contradicting argument. You say that children 'can, and do, distinguish between the real and imaginary at a very early age' this is simply not true as I myself have friends who as children were not able to do that – indeed the burning fires of hell, of which they were told, were very real indeed. Only now after reasonable thinking do they realise what a vile concept religion is. Secondly you state that during the dark ages across Europe the places of salvation, civility and comfort were churches and monasteries – why? - Fear of God's retribution that's why!

You also raise the issue of Stalin among others stating that as atheists they committed great atrocities under the guise of atheism. Wrong. They implemented a doctrine used by religion over the centuries to control the masses from the top down and as you stated persecuted many faiths not just Jews.

Also for the almighty there are too many question marks throughout your text.
