51. Gay Marriage Outlawed in California

Comment #279403 by mordacious1 on November 6, 2008 at 2:59 am

My wife and I did not get married for many years because we did not need the state to tell us we were partners in life. Eventually though, situations arose where the benefits of being married, eg. taxes, were too tempting and financially necessary so we did it. I had a choice and others do not. That is not right or just, period.

I think that prop 8 could be deemed unconstitutional by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Unfortunately, there are 5 catholics on the Supreme Court and they are all strong catholics. I think that this is a major problem with our justice system. Scalia is not the type who would set aside his religious beliefs to support human rights. Ain't gonna happen.

I like my presidents to be educated at the best schools. I also prefer them to know something about the law, especially the Constitution. Bush had not a clue about the law, Palin thought she would be in charge of the Senate. Good grief. The guy who signs legislation into law should know what he/she is signing.

Perhaps a Phd in History would be a good degree for a president.

Al

Glad for the umbrella then.

As to your post of 644, there are many presidents that weren't Ivy Leaguers and/or lawyers. The Bush's of course were Yale grads, but not lawyers. Carter went to the Naval Academy with a degree in physics, Reagan went to Eureka College and studied something, then became an actor. LBJ went to some Texas teacher's school and taught school. Eisenhower West Point, general...etc, etc.

Oh, I think Ford went to Yale and got a law degree and Nixon was a lawyer but went to Duke.

I just hope Obama has an 8 year term:

John Paul Stevens 88, Ruth Bader Ginsburg 75, Antonin (overweight) Scalia 72, Anthony Kennedy 72, Stephen Breyer 70 .

This is where it counts.

"I fully understand how and why America’s black community would overwhelmingly vote for Obama, many or most because he is a black man."

I'm not sure this is true. I think if the Republicans would have run Alan Keyes for President, the blacks would not have supported him even though he is black. African americans vote on issues like everyone else. It just so happens that a black man ran with a platform they could support. I'm sure they chose Obama over Clinton because of his race, but mainly because they saw no real difference in their platforms.

A LOT of money was poured into the Prop 8 campaign from the mormons and the catholics, plus there are alot of hispanic catholics in CA, so there you have it.

No, I share your gloom. I knew Obama would win, so I didn't concentrate on that. My big three races were: Prop 8, Dist. 4 in CA (congress), and Al Franken for Senate. All are going bad for me. Bummed.

[edit] The counties with a large hispanic (catholic) population are overwhelmingly voting for prop 8. That seems to be a big problem here.

CBS withdrew its projection of Obama winning Virginia (for now). The counties reporting in so far are what is known as "the Confederate southern part of the state". The northern part, what Joe McCain (the wacky bro) called the communist north of the state, is yet to report. I think it will still be a win for O.

The downside of campaigns:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/weblogs/trail-times/2008/Oct/30/obamas-big-carbon-footprint-1/

These guys report that the planes, buses, and motorcades put 136,680 tons of carbon in the air, although another report stated it was 165,000 tons.

By comparison, the average household of two produces 5.5 tons/year.

In southern CA, Wells Fargo bank volunteered their branches to be polling places. There were strict guidelines put in place. The employees are not allowed to wear Wells Fargo shirts, all advertisements for the bank had to be covered or removed, and even brochures had to be put away.

But when I voted in a church today, all the jesus slogans were visible on the walls and there was a big cross right over my voting machine. Weird double standard methinks.

One thing about prop 8 is that I've learned which of my neighbors are homophobic. That "Yes on 8" sticker on the car sure says alot about a person.

I met a guy at the gas station and we compared atheist hoodies. Turns out we both had the same polling place, a church. Seems we had the same idea about making a statement.

BTW, I don't think Richard HAS to come out against prop 8, it seems obvious to me that he is.

Yes, very scary. We're in for at least four years of bitterness from the right if Obama wins. At least with Congess being held by the Dems, we won't have an impeachment for two years.

I do not know about RD.net, but I've mentioned prop 8 a few times, my last just a few minutes ago. Not only the mormons but also the Knights of Columbus are pouring out-of-state money in. Next to Obama/McCain it is second in spending of all campaigns. Also, I have received so many annoying robo calls on this.

Again, if you live in CA, get out and vote against this horrible prop.

96. For many evangelicals, it will be the end of the world if Obama wins

Comment #277935 by mordacious1 on November 4, 2008 at 9:22 am

Richard's original statement was that we should not assume Obama will win and even if he is going to win, it would be great if he won in a landslide and that the congressional races went Democratic. Give them a thrashing.

I agree. Especially on the west coast, where the race may be over by the time you vote. In California, the homophobic Prop. 8 needs to be defeated. It is the worst prop. I have ever seen and there have been some bad ones.

Also, if you happen to live in the mainly Republican 4th District, Charlie Brown has a good chance of beating McLimpDick, but it will be close, so he needs your vote.

ps. I almost feel guilty because I live in a Repub. district. The waiting lines at the polls here are 5 minutes or less. If I lived in a Democratic district, in a red state, I might have to wait 4 or 5 hours.
