51. Christopher Hitchens on Religion

Comment #48843 by eno on June 9, 2007 at 7:15 am

The caller who stated that every society has had relisgion and prayed is mistaken. I would refer him (and others) to the brilliant book 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond that takes a fascinating look at early humanity and pre-Christianity. Also, it might be worth looking at 'Breaking the Spell' by Daniel C. Dennett. People really should do some research before they start spurting emotional and irratitional and subjective tosh.

Then he goes to talk about praying for his daughter. What a twit. He actually thinks that it was his praying that saved his daughter and not the doctors who administered the chemotherapy! How offensive.

52. The 'Is God...Great?' Debate

darwin2: you seem to accept evolution and other facts about the universe but then you come out with piffle like 'I believe we have an eternal soul'. What are you basing this on? A dream? A 'feeling'?

Whatever it is, it is certainly not scientific.

Hitchens is a tornado of a public speaker and debator.

It's about time we had someone this fierce to speak up on behalf of atheists, free-thinkers, Brites, Secularists or whatever you want to call us.

He is formidabale unlike the idiotic zealots that challenge him because he argues with the greatest of tools: reason, language and sense.

Like Dawkins, he is seeking the truth for all of our sakes.

Interesting stuff. Jared Diamond's 'Guns, Germs and Steel' gives a fascinating insight into early humans. Worth checking out.

55. Comic in US 'hate speech' row

Comment #45207 by eno on May 26, 2007 at 10:35 pm

It's not hate speech and we all know it. All his points are true and expressed with wit and a desire to see the world with reason and peace.

It's no more hate speech than The God Delusion and The End of Faith.

That was a fun and refreshing read actually. I do know what he's saying but it's more relevant in The Selfish Gene than in GD. I love this quote: "Dawkins convinced me that every attractive woman is really just a set of great genes stuffed into a pair of great jeans" - brilliant.

Wonderful to read an uplifting article on the Big A and especially refreshing in The Times. Three cheers for Matthew Parry!

58. The Video: Bill O'Reilly Interviews Richard Dawkins

Who is the O'Reilly character? What an absolute buffoon. Is it actually a news programme? I've seen similar things on Fox news when in the US but do American citizens actually take this chap seriously? He is the worst kind of journalist I've ever seen. I don't even think Charlie Rose is much better. Maybe we should just let America get on with it? I don't know what the answer is.

Some chap commented above that 'we've' had enough of Dawkins' arguments. Speak for yourself and not for others Mister. I've heard enough of the Xtian arguments my entire life and I happen to think RD's arguments are sound, plausible and encouraging.

They are truly horrific. I feel so sorry for the children who have never experienced a decent upbringing. I saw the BBC programme and was shocked at the level of child abuse that is going on. So much hatred is bound to be turned around on them at some point. A very sad situation.

An honest, passionate and well written piece of journalism. Great stuff, Polly.

Good on you Matthew! Xtians need to know that we are not going to stand for this type of behaviour any longer. As long as there are students like Matthew out there then future has a chance.

64. Intelligent Design teaching materials sent to UK schools

Comment #11884 by eno on December 8, 2006 at 2:55 am

We have to take a stand on this. It is vital that we protect children from these biased lies, mischief and abuse. If I discover a local school of mine is teaching this I'll be contacting the school governors and possibly the press. This is outrageous.
