Relativism. Why is the programme you watched more "privileged" than Big Brother?

What would have been perfect for me would be a series of 3 programs showing Darwin's ideas in all their breathtaking glory, that could have been used in schools

And we will have this. Next year BBC are planning lots to commemorate the 200/150th anniversary.

As i watched the programme last night i couldnt help wondering the effect it would have if there were only three channels of TV in the UK as there were in the 70's. (ever met a baby boomer who didnt see Abigails Party?). As is how many kids were tuned to channel 4 last night?

Have to disagree with you there Steve_W. I thought the last programme was the best of what has been an excellent series.

You mention the quote regarding evidence for evolution (a fact) Yet it's the religious groups who are holding this knowledge back from schoolchildren.

Of course they have to be taken to task.

Summary

Recognition of cancer in extreme antiquity has been limited to osteomas in mosasaurs and haemangiomas and growths of unclear origin in dinosaurs. We describe a metastatic cancer in a dinosaur.

David Robertson asked why cancer is predominantly western disease and Steve Zara gave him the most plausible explanation .

He could have, but didnt, ask why leukaemia manifests predominantly in childhood.

On daft terms like atheist faith

Another one checked off. No it is not daft. It is actually a good description of your position. It is a faith position in just the same way as Christianity is - although Christianity has more evidence and reason behind it.

Sorry David. That check just bounced. Please write another.

Yes - complete nonsense. My article was written precisely against the nonsense that the Tsunami was a direct result of bad behaviour by people

Mmmm. specific disasters? not usually the direct result of specific sins etc.

Now, please address Steve Zara's question @259

Also. Will you please stop using expressions like "the atheist faith" Its just daft and I suspect you know it.

I was thinking more along the lines that what might be picked up is that "Darwin was totally wrong about sexual selection" (as Roughgarden seems to be suggesting). The implication being that if he was wrong about that….well you get the picture.

Anti-evolutionists love controversies in evolutionary theory, as for example SJ Gould et al and the criticisms of "adaptationists".

That was why I added the post. Sorry I didn't elaborate.

From an article by Bob Grant in The Scientist magazine about the exhibit

"The main thrust of the exhibit is that sexual selection - a key component of Darwin's theory of evolution - is flat out wrong and needs to be re-thought in light of the curious sexual proclivities held by a number of our fellow animals."

As a matter of fact, I don't think mutation is involved at all.

A single amino acid change in the gene for haemoglobin can confer resistance to malaria. This is common in certain areas of the world where malaria is prevalent. The consensus thinking on this is that a mutation arose and conferred a selective advantage for people who were heterozygous at this locus.

This is one of many examples.

What is your explanation of this?

Evening all

What's happening?

Oh!! I see Mr O'Brien has materialised.

Bobby. Richard Dawkins is brilliant scientist. He has done more to publicise the scientific method (the greatest achievment of humanity IMO) than the vast majority of published researchers that I can think of, who are busy adding pieces to the big "jigsaw puzzle" His ability to communicate this to generations of other people is outstanding. And in order to do this you REALLY have to understand it.

Unfortunately his efforts are lost on people like you.

What have you published recently Robert?
