The universe that we can observe has an 'event horizon'. Galaxies beyond the event horizon are moving away from us at such a speed that no light and no information of any kind can ever reach us from them. They are literally out of sight and out of mind.

This is brilliant for its simplicity and ease of understanding...jcw

Something to consider... CHINA! that unscrupulous government is the driving munitions supplier to Sudan, even though it has signed on to the UN Arms embargo.

Also, China together with the Russians recently vetoed the UN resolution on Mugabe and his cronies in Zimbabwe. Any little respect I had for this particular version of the Chinese government has just been flushed down the toilet. The new Russian President is no more than a puppet to Putin and his cronies

I agree with what you say. I just wish the African Union and South Africa would get its collective S**T together and do something rather than just sit on the fence and enable Mugabe and his ilk with arms shipments from China passing through their country.

It is indeed an internal African problem that needs solving with pressure on SA to do the right thing if it wants to stand up and be recognized as a civilized member of the world community. In some ways many S Africans seem to be ahead of their government on that issue, and this need supporting by the EU and other governments. jcw

You make a valid point about Zimbabwe not harboring Al Qaeda types, and is thus of little interest to the perceived GWOT, where only US and European interests seem to be represented.

Surely what Mugabe is practicing is also a type of war of terrorism. He is terrorizing his own people.

I'm thus suggesting the GWOT is a bit selective. Surely pressure could be put on the right people in South Africa to stop Mugabe and co terrorizing his own people, or else... jcw

Thanks, I'm glad to see not everyone thinks BIG OIL is owned by the management of the company, but by shareholders, pension funds, mutual funds etc.

For any politician, not matter what their political stripe to go out and pander to the ignorance of the electorate at large is despicable, and similar to theists pushing their religion. Such dishonesty and stupidity really is reprehensible.

Al

So you work for a Mutual fund; I'm sure your company would be one of the first to move your interests in big oil elsewhere if there was not a decent return on capital.

For Obama to suggest to rob Peter to pay Paul, playing at Robin Hood is disingenuous or just plain ignorance on his part. If he really wanted to do something useful, if anything he should raise taxes on energy, to reduce consumption and make alternatives more viable. But that of course won't sit well with the average pick up / suv driving bubba will it? jcw

64. John McCain: America a Christian nation, needs Christian president

Comment #191198 by kaiserkriss on June 10, 2008 at 11:11 am

Can anyone explain to me why Obama wants to introduce a "windfall profits" tax on the oil companies to fund his energy handout of $100.00 to every citizen when the obscene profits the oil companies are raking in only represent on average a 4% return on Capital?

On the other hand people are quite willing to pay their Bank or credit card holder 18% or more in interest. Something seems to be wrong here.

On the one hand "Big Oil" is supposed to provide energy security for the citizens and provide the capital (from their shareholders) but they are not allowed to return any profit to their shareholders. It in unfortunate many people falling for this trick by not realizing the absolutely huge amounts of Capital required to explore for and develop oil and gas reserves.

Also, I like this quote from Charles Krauthammer

Instead of hiking the price ourselves by means of a gasoline tax that could be instantly refunded to the American people in the form of lower payroll taxes, we let the Saudis, Venezuelans, Russians and Iranians do the taxing for us - and pocket the money that the tax would have recycled back to the American worker.

Comment #187051 by kaiserkriss on June 1, 2008 at 8:17 am

The problem with the statistics quoted is in the phrasing of the questions.

I have taken the same approach as Steven Jones did with his Islamic friends (thanks bucketchemist for pointing this out #187035 above) on my Christian friends with similar results.

People identify themselves as Christian, but when challenged about their beliefs become quite selective. They also believe in evolution, but become quite defensive about it when it is pointed out to them that it goes against the basic tenets of their religious beliefs.

The bottom line seems to be that although people identify themselves as Christian, that when push comes to shove they really have better things to do with their time and couldn't be bothered to follow things through rationally. It is of little real importance to them. It is also easier to fit in with the norm, or majority than stick your neck out for something that really is not that important to you.

I suspect this actually to be the case when people are asked about their religious affiliation. jcw

While we in Canada have so called gun control, it really has not done anything to reduce shootings.

If anything from my observation, most hand guns are in the hands of individuals active in criminal activity (no real surprise there)such as drug dealers. In my neck of the woods we have very few black people, but many Asians involved in organized crime, specifically the drug trade.

It thus seems that gun related crimes have more to do other illegal activities, specifically the drug trade, prostitution and extortion rather than race, at least here in Western Canada.

The solution, and it had been discussed before, legalize drugs, take the money out of it, make them available to certified druggies for free, ditto with prostitution. Take the criminal element and profits away, and Organized crime will scream the loudest about the decay of morality, because it hurts them in the pocket book.

It is no real surprise that the big crime families in the US are all from good Italian (ROMAN CATHOLIC) stock.

Imagine the run on eggs and the price increase and demand for eggs if there were suddenly declared to be an illegal substance. jcw

anna, here in the capital of the canadian oil industry (Calgary) we are lucky enough to have a fairly well laid out bicycle path system, with room for improvements that many people use to commute to work. Unfortunately, despite the predictions of global warming, our bike path is probably only useful from mid April to mid October at the latest, when it just lets too cold and dangerous (ice and melting snow)to use without taking ones life into ones hand. I presume this also applies to many of the mid western states that have quite miserable winters.

Your point is taken though, municipal governments need to be encouraged to provide better access, and basically safer and CONVENIENT public transport systems.

Couple of things to remember. At current world oil prices of approximately $125/bbl, the liter price works out to be about $0.75. Allowing for transportation, refining and retail costs, the price at the pump should be under $1.00/ liter, or for the Americans $3.78/gallon.

For Europeans paying more than double, blame it on your governments who use fuel taxes to pay for other things they want to bribe the electorate with to remain in power.

The myth of the electric automobile remains exactly that, a myth. How is that electricity produced you want to store in those fancy throw away batteries? In many cases by hydroelectric power, nuclear power, coal and gas. From the original form of energy, the conversion and transmission losses to electricity are approximately 66%, something the proponents of electric cars conveniently forget.

The real solution is of course is to reduce consumption of energy, and the development of highly efficient internal combustion engines with increased efficiency such as the proposed hybrid gasoline diesel cycle that increases efficiency and reduces emissions at the same time.

Of course, if the green lobby were serious about their aims, they wouldn't be playing into the hands of big oil in the US where the newest refinery was built in 1983. There is tremendous room for making refineries more efficient, if only one could start with a clean sheet of paper. jcw

Like most here my first reaction would be to hunt down this miserable creature and hang him up by his testicles, but to what effect?

He would only be another martyr to his cause. The only way to bring these countries into line is to have a secular dictator like Saddam Hussein run the country and educating the people, as well as engaging them in commerce.

One of the biggest mistakes in history was made by the US ambassador to Iraq just before the invasion of Kuwait, where lack of understanding of Arab culture contributed significantly to a major misunderstanding, in which Saddam Hussein thought he had the tacit agreement of the USA to invade Kuwait. Saddam did not find religion until afterwards and it was convenient for him to fight the great white Satan.

Even though he had very many faults and ruled with an iron first, he was on the correct track to bring his people into the 20th Century at the time, similarly to the Shah of Iran earlier.

It is through education and the engagement of commerce with other successful societies that are more secular that the demon of religion, in this case the radical elements of Islam will be slain.

Poverty and misery brought on to the masses are places where religion and radical ideas thrive. Post 1918 Germany is a prime example.

The worst thing Bush and Blair did was to invade Iraq on false pretenses, just because they had a hate on for Saddam. Instead they should have tried to repair relations, encourage commerce and education to build up the country to act as another example for other Muslim countries that religious fanaticism self defeating in the long run.

One just has to take away the power radical mullahs have over the population by bringing up their standards of living to something acceptable, instead of bombing the shit out of everything. Just my $0.02 jcw

I suspect nothing could be further from the truth, and in this instance the simplest solution is NOT the obvious answer.

So why do we have those "no fly zones" as you put it? Is the population at large too dumb to see through these simplistic ploys taken out of context, or are our leaders expressing their disgust at the electorate by making them look even dumber than they probably are?

edit to illustrate "Ich kaempfe den Feind" translates into "I am fighting the enemy", not "I am struggling with the enemy".

Especially when taken in the time context of the early 20th Century in Germany when Mein Kampf was written, language tended to be more black and white, Militaristic terms were quite common in every day language. The anglicising of German had yet to happen. end edit

Sharon : I live down the road from you in Cowtown and am self employed. Despite the perception of females being paid less for the same work as men, many men, myself included go out of our way to help and make sure females are paid a fair wage for the same work, and have the same opportunities as their male counterparts. If anything, I could be accused of reverse discrimination.

Some people are just naturally motivated IF the potential reward is there. Others will just rise to their level of comfort and be happy with their lot in life, regarding anything more as unnecessary luxury. jcw

What surprises me is how Ms Manji, an avowed lesbian can reconcile her religions intolerance towards homosexuals with her sexual preferences.

It seems to be selective compartmentalization again. Give me the more outspoken Ms Hirsi Ali attitude towards Islam any day. She at least does not try to pussy foot around many of the more abhorrent issues. jcw
