51. Transcending God: An interview with Christopher Hitchens

Comment #56002 by d4m14n on July 13, 2007 at 7:14 am

Hitchens:

There's a film—I've never seen it—about a village atheist in America. At one point, there's some incredible thunderstorm or some other apocalyptic event that makes it seem as though the Second Coming really is about to happen. Everyone's incredibly impressed. And even he thinks it seems to be true. But he keeps muttering as these events unfold, "But where did Cain get his wife?"

Does anybody know which film he's referring to?

I agree. The virgin birth of Krishna seems to be prolifically stated on atheist sites. From where does this alternate account originate? Is it completely unfounded?

Can someone please clear up the virgin birth of Krishna myth for me? Apparently there are at least 2 traditions. One states that Krishna was the 8th child of Devaki, the other apparently claims that she was a virgin. I see plenty of atheist sites mentioning the second account, but the only creditable accounts I can find are of the former, 8th child account.

Many thanks.

56. Richard Dawkins in the Time 100

Maybe they're just warming up their readership for when they drop The Big D in at number 1 on the Time 100 list.

We all know that whatever the results of the online poll, their editors are going to largely ignore it and go with someone who is actually influential, someone a little controversial, someone exactly like Richard Dawkins. We can live in hope.

Am I the only one that wondered why Katie Price was opening a science museum?

Devolved,

I'm sure you'll have many responses to your challenge. I'll start the ball rolling by pointing you in the direction of a recently evolved, new version of the human ASPM gene.

I'm not a geneticist, but I'd stake my house that the difference between the 'old' and the 'new' version is a minor change in the gene sequence, NOT the introduction of 'encyclopaedic quantities of new information', as you seem to believe it would require.

Done...

Hi.

Just a quick note to say thank you from Britain.

I've recently had the misfortune to view a video from the Paula Zahn Now show on CNN. You can probably guess that it was of the 'Why do atheists inspire such hatred?' article.

Whilst Debbie Schlussel and Karen Hunter proved to be nothing more than an utter disgrace to your nation, you singlehandedly salvaged some of your country's dignity. Your empathy and reason in what must have been a difficult, uncomfortable situation is very much respected and appreciated.

Once again, thank you.

I'll update if I get a response.

60. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included

Re #21382

I'd rather she exercise her freedom of speech and expose her "thinking" for the world to see.

I'm not sure I agree with your sentiments. Fine, give her enough rope and she may hang herself. But if she's been using that rope to lynch people, you've got blood on your hands!

Ms Hunter clearly holds prejudices and it was quite apparent that she would bring those prejudices into the classroom. She wants her students to pray with her. No self-respecting atheist should be happy with that. It is very much an issue for the school administration. I hope she's made an example of.
