Good post, I think you are right about the Libel having some horrible disgusting things in it - funny thing is if you hurl those at a Christian like lets say David Robertson, the worse you will get back is some sarcasm - say it in America and Bill Donahue might turn puce - but on the whole you wont get lynched for it too much - the most you get back is a cherry picked quote about Jesus loving you or something.
Insult the Qu'ran and you might get a different answer - go seek Islamic Joe on this site somewhere and its CAPITAL LETTERS TIME!
The Qu'ran pretty much is the infallible word of Allah and I would think, though could be wrong, that that is the central doctrine of Islam.
At least with Christianity now there is slightly more lee-way in interpreting the Libel to suit a more passive stance - not that Christianity isn't still quite bellicose, but there is a significant difference
Am I wiffling?

Sure thing, the infidel thing is pretty much a constant isn't it!:)
But I have been thinking, if you came back in time to lets say medieval times even in England, you could be burnt at the stake or some other gruesome death for commenting on how nice the halibut was and that it was good enough for Jehovah! Christianity was pretty much as rabid as Islam is now - I am attempting to understand just what it was that changed things and how we could possibly incorporate it into getting the more fundamental followers of Islam to calm the hell down.
Take 12th, 13th and 14th Century Europe just as examples and look at how dangerous it was - you didn't insult God or it was a fate worse than a fate worse than death, the Christian religion was fanatical.
Now look at Christianity, yes there are some horrible groups out there but it is now more acceptable to wave two fingers at Jesus and not suffer too much except watch the Catholic League turn a funny shade of puce. Sure the death threats still exist but it is in my opinion a lot more tame.
Oh I dont know what to do...should we simply be offering a nice cup of Tea? :)

I think you are right and that is the most difficult aspect of the situation - the ones who want to take it too far have to learn to accept criticism, the big problem is how?
Islam is Islam is it not? (Too many is words there I think!)
Christianity and other religions have many denominations, they have split into more peaceful (ish) sections like the Anglicans etc and I think that is where the Christian Church at least can still be offended but criticism on the whole can be tolerated without too much fuss.
There are not many denominations of Islam are there? Is it not the problem that they have a more singular religion and therefore more liable and receptive to be offended?

Decius, Goldy and Brian
Cheers tons for that, it still doesn't help me understand the likes of Wooter any better but it is increasing my knowledge about what is important!
Apatosaurus or even giraffes developed long necks because, amongst other reasons, that was a good attribute to have when their survival was put to the test by natural selection.
Wooter on the other hand surely is not sacrificing his knowledge to a greater purpose - in fact he is doing the complete opposite.
Unlike the Apatosaurus whose sacrifice for brains gave it more food, Wooter has sacrificed whatever passed for his brains, intellect and possibly basic motor functions for nothing. All that gibberish about Mona Lisa, Evolins, God, Darwin being wrong, Wooter being smarter than the best experts on this planet about how life, the universe and everything works - it all surely points to no evolutionary advantage.
Its like that analogy put to txtpiper - there in the desert he has two bags, two choices. One bag contains a survival kit, the other contains the Bible and a small wooden cross - if the rules were that he could only take one, I am sure there would at least be some indecision, or worst case immediate refusal, about whether to take the survival kit.
Don't get me wrong (well, you can if you like!) I actually quite like Richard Dawkins theory that religion is a misfiring of an evolutionary trait that was meant for something else entirely. But I still cannot see how Wooter's batshit is an aid unto him.
I ask this merely for discussions sake, I don't actually know Wooter and don't want to presume so, I am only going on what we have all witnessed him dribble upon this site.

I have a theory:
Most religious fanatics like this are so sexually frustrated that it causes them to act in this irrational manner. Even the thought of a cucumber after a long abstinence from sex makes them fantasise about women ploughing themselves silly but then the religion barges into their minds, turning this fantasy into a frustrated desire to make life even more difficult for themselves.
This escalation to fruit and veg worries me - they already can't see their women cos of the clothing and the merest hint of ankle is enough to drive them potty - now they are eyeing the fruit up and thinking the worst - I dread to think how far this is going to go!

That's a brilliant example, nobody actually knows this man, nobody has ever seen him but he looks like a South American David Attenborough who is either white or black depending on who you talk to!
None ever met Jesus as far as I am concerned but everybody has an opinion on what the man did and what he is supposed to be able to do in accordance with the information passed down the ages.
Fantastic stuff, I will speak with Quetz about doing something great with your favourite drink!
I really enjoyed that second part, I really like Steven Pinkers ideas about how the brain has evolved.
What made me giggle is Richard turned up and pointed across the road to that preacher chap and said "I was born over there" and the preacher pointed to somewhere completely different - who would you trust to know something like that?

I am not ruling out the possibility of a historical human called Jesus of Nazareth but I am still in no way near convinced by any of the evidence so far.
Decius has hit it on the head by saying there were major historians around who could have documented a mention of this guy, there is even nothing from the surrounding countries from tradesmen or travelers who could have mentioned this really famous bloke knocking around in Jerusalem - absolutely nothing.
There are plenty of Jesus named people in and around the 2nd century, one even got crucified by the Romans, his name was Jesus ben Strada but it was in a town called Lydda 25 miles from Jerusalem. But there was never a Jesus ben Nazareth, never anyone who is supposed to have lived from 6BC/AD to the maximum of 36AD. The finest historians and excavators in history have dug up absolutely nothing on this guy.
The only reason I stick to my guns saying he was a myth is because of identical stories found in Near Eastern religions nearly 3000 years before this guy was supposed to have existed.
I think of Jesus as more of a character that someone like Shakespeare created, a character who is metaphorically representative of the history of time it was written.
Most religions started out as word of mouth, it was tradition passed down the generations, characters got mixed with others. Looking at the Egyptian Book of the Dead or Mithras or perhaps Horus and all the countless other gods and prophets created by human beings before Jesus turns up and it is more than obvious where this character comes from.
I am open to be convinced otherwise but the chances are incredibly slim indeed.

Jesus, like David, Moses, Isaiah, Job, Elijah etc is based on an ideological character from previous myths. He acts as the King, the Philosopher, the Politician - all the idealised versions stolen from previous religions and cobbled together to make him look like he is perfection personified.
His name literally means "Anointed one who will save", its no coincidence his character turns up in a religious book and people look to him for guidance

We historians get really hacked off with mistreatment of evidence. Pretending something is Primary, first hand stuff, when it is a bunch of fact-less tripe not even worthy of your cat to piss on is simply Wrong in all shades, shapes and sizes of the word.
I just get so confused as to somehow mentioning the Bible suddenly makes everything true - "God created the Heavens!" and voila, you don't need any more info, you don't need to look any further into it. You can misquote an expert afterwards just to really cement it if you want but there it is in all its glory. If that is not an insult to learning and discovery I don't know what is.

I really enjoyed that program, magnificent stuff!
It was so good even my mum phoned me up straight after to chat about evolution and what I have managed to learn. She has always been a massive Carl Sagan fan and loves the universe so this programme has now got her interested in further things. Great lady my mum I tells yer!
What I found quite staggering was that some of those kids were actually holding a fossil in their hands and they still insisted "no, I am sticking with religion" in the same parroted fashion most probably inherited from their parents.
I do hope that has got the ones who were convinced to start questioning and discussing things, get the others questioning their faith a bit - get them thinking.
The story of Darwin also fascinates me, from a man who looked like he had not future who went on to discover one of the most important findings in human history. I struggle to think what a mind blowing experience it must have been to realise this when before the only explanation available at the time was God.
I was also amazed that most of his specimens have been kept intact after all these years, does anyone know what sort of preservation methods they use to keep them like that?
Anyway, well done Richard, another great and helpful programme, I look forward to the next one on humans.

You still haven't explained which one of the 30,000 denominations of the Christian religion is the right one or could ever claim to be.
You don't seem to know much about Stalin do you?
Stalin was an opportunist and exploiter of people, here, let Hitchens explain it:
For hundreds of years, millions of Russians had been told the head of state should be a man close to God, the czar, who was head of the Russian Orthodox Church as well as absolute despot. If you're Stalin, you shouldn't be in the dictatorship business if you can't exploit the pool of servility and docility that's ready-made for you.

Considering there are about 30,000 denominations of the Christian religion alone did you want Richard to write about all of them or would that be a little complex?
I don't understand how you can accuse Richard of not knowing enough about the Christian religion when it has the massive problem of properly defining what their own god wants of his followers in the first place. A less complex god would not need so many definitions surely?

Txpiper, I honestly don't think you would ever accept evolution no matter how much information was put in front of you which I find quite astounding to say the least.
How is the supernatural an explanation for something? In order for the natural to be affected by the supernatural there would still have to be something testable about it. Funnily enough, you can't, so what is the point in arguing that YOUR god did it? It doesn't matter which god did it, I want to see how any god could do it.
So my challenge to you is to give as detailed account of how your god (Prove its the Christian God doing it as well) does the things he does in the same way that you expect us to provide information on evolution. If we are to live up to your expectations and produce the evidence you want, I say you produce the exact same type of evidence that we want.
That's fair isn't it?

I do think the Immigration Laws need to be revised and then properly implemented - the current system is an absolute shambles in terms of policing and actually having no knowledge of who turns up. I know a couple of people who work in the police and some stories I have heard are just plain sloppy organisation on the part of immigration control. It is far too easy to get over here and that is what encourages illegal immigrants to flock to Britain's shores.
But I am in whole hearted agreement with Steve in that I am not willing to sacrifice our culture by turning into a thug about this.
I don't want my foreign friends, of whom I have the deepest respect for despite our differences over religion, to feel like they don't belong here. Like me, they were born and raised here, pay their taxes and live normal lives.
Just like if I were to up sticks and go and live in another country, how would I want to be welcomed?
I hate religious extremism, I deplore it - I would have the IDEA of it slowly wiped out by logic and reason so that religion was still free to practise but it had no direct influence on education and politics.
I know full well, especially from talking to the religious nutters on this site, that logic and reason is something that will never penetrate their religious walls and barriers, but I am not going to give up being as civil as I can to those who deserve it.

One part of me is almost glad that people within the religion are speaking up about this issue, as I would encourage moderate Muslims to speak out against the violence caused by Islamic funtobeamentalist idiots, I would encourage more Catholics to advocate better birth control through condom use. It would save lives, simple as that.
The other part of me is almost seething with contempt for fatuous statements as dribbled by men like this reverend:
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the accusation was "clearly unfounded" and insisted the Church is active in combating AIDS.
The answer to AIDS requires deeper and more complex interventions, in which the Church is active on many fronts.
