but his origin theory lacks "the missing link" of micro evolution transcending into the fabled macro evolution.

You left "fabled" off from before micro-evolution.
Dog and cat are terms of characterisation given by man to the creatures he sees. These characterisations are as a result of physical attributes and the like.
You are correct, of course. We won't see a cat/dog - they are different species. We can, if ethics allow is, make hybrids - after all, we make donkey/horses and lion/tigers. But their DNA is close-ish. We could even, I guess, make a chimpanzee/man. I guess we might even, at a stratch, make a hippo/whale as they are related distantly. But while we might not make a cat/dog, we can make a dog that looks like a cat and vice versa, I think. However, what would you call a cat that is a dog? If it looks like a cat but has canine DNA...I'd think you'd still bang on about evolution being wrong becasue that cat has dog DNA. It only shows you sone't really understand what evolution is about, how it happens, what it means.
Cats do not turn to dogs and vice versa. however, thay can have a common ancestor, which is neither cattish or doggish but is what it is.

:-D 2 Earles fork BMW owners (sort of...I'll own the R50 one day...muahahah).
Off topic? Wot? Us?
Joeblow seems a tad confused - education? Might be lost on him...
Maybe I am way out in space, tee hee, but did anyone else see it this way?

Dunno, maybe one day the movie will be on TV - I'll see it then...
Question - God made Adam from mud...so why is it hard to conceive ambiogenesis from the same source? Granted Genesis doesn't say how God made the 6th day men and women...they just became, if one reads literally.
Another question. God is not of this Earth, yet RD's claim of alien seeding is, in your words, ludicrous. Yet it is what, literally, Christians believe.
So Genesis is ludicrous? I think so. I have heard, though, that you types take it literally...

classic! A friend of mine has a 30 year old BMW, also very nice. The more maintenance-heavy, the more personal I guess.

:-) Just finishing the rebuild - definitely maintenance heavy!
My father has a BMW R50 - a 56/58 bike (frame and engine are different years). I'm hoping to get it over here in NZ as he feels he's not using it enough.
Also have a Triumph TR6 car, an Alfa Giulia Super awaiting a bout of restoration and hopefully getting an old Citroen Traction Avant to play with (again, the last from my father who feels he's not using it enough...)
Maintenance? You mean there are vehicles that need no maintenance? So...you don't change the oil after 1000 miles? Never! I don't believe you! ;-)

Reading TGD, I found I was skimming a lot of the meme stuff but could read the rest., Mind you, it was a philosophy that I related to - in fact, the book didn't open any eyes in my head, mostly just set me nodding in agreement as it was stuff I knew inside me already.

Etymology
The accepted etymology for "chav" is that it derives from the Romani word "chavi", meaning a child.[4] Related words derived from the same source include "charva" meaning prostitute (used in north-east England in a similar sense). In modern Spanish "chaval", "chavo" or "chavón" means "lad" (eg: El Chavo, a Mexican television comedy whose principal character is a street orphan).[5] "chavvy" is also a gypsy term for young person, or child as in "me lil chavvy". The term is known to have migrated into the local dialects of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, in the post war years, coming into common usage in the late 1940's.

Many folk etymologies have sprung up around the word. These include backronyms such as "Council Housed And Violent" and "Council House Adult Vermin".[6] It has also been suggested that pupils at Cheltenham Ladies' College and Cheltenham College used the word to describe the younger men of the town ("Cheltenham Average").[7] Similarly, it has been thought to originate from the Medway Towns where it was used to describe people from the town of Chatham ("Chatham Average").

Goldy do you know the etymology of Chav? In Spanish, a word for lad or young man is Chaval. I wonder if there's some link......

Not 100% sure but some reckon it's from Romany. It was just starting to appear in the UK when I left 6 years ago.

Interventionist? Yes, as it serves Him.

Impossible? No.
Improbable? Everything is improbable.

And we only have your word for that.
As for everythign being improbably, not so. Place a bottle of vodka in the same room as a chav and it is not improbable that it will be drunk (as will chav).

That is what atheism is supposed to mean but the way Dawkins and many others treat is that religion is evil, god CANNOT exist and all theists are deluded and less intelligent than atheists.

Dunno about less intelligent - I read it mainly as deluded in that theists are backing the wrong horses. Look around you - for all the wonder you see, there is something dying and being eaten and rotting - all of it recycling in a closed system. For anything nice, there's something rather not nice. For all the little Bambis out there, there's a full wolf full of baby deer.
Religion is evil in the way it legitimises excesses, such as killings and slavery. yes, there is good in religion - but then there's good in all things, even athiesm. At least athiesm does not provide an excuse for evil. It shows evil and good laid bare for all to see. religion will disfigure good and mask evil if it was for (insert deity of choice).
And as your discussion with Elli shows, what you know of gods is all dependent on what other people tell you. Not one of you Christians here know anything about God or Jesus bar what you have read and been told. You know nothing at all and have nothing to base your religion on other that what other (presumably men) have told you. Hell, you don't even have all the gospels to hand to try and de-Paulinise Jesus. The most religious scholars in the land will let their own prejudices and cultures taint any message any god can give, as will their scholars and so on. No one knows anything about any god, yet they still presume to tell us.
Melissa (assuming you're still visiting), you said way back when what god intended for us, how good he is, how belief in Jesus will save us, how we are born in sin, etc, etc. You don't know any of this for sure. You cannot tell us that from your heart because it was not revealed to you by any god but by men intent on maintaining their power over a congregation.
Odd - people rail against repressive regimes, scream at torch bearers because of the Chinese Communist Party, yet willingly let some stranger talk to them on days of worship and accept the same injunctions that the repressive regimes give - only this time willingly! AND (damn, sorry for those capitals) tell others to accept them too!
As it is, I have recently had a baby (and another on it's way - assuming nothing goes wrong) and I can assure you, there was no sin in her at birth. None. Those who spout that line are, to me, the most evil people I can think of. To say that is to admit you'd kill your child and feel nothing but joy at their "salvation". That one line ensures I will never accept religion into my family.

No I disagree that we all share common moral standards

We all know murder is wrong (the cold blooded sort. Obviously some will justify murder...). We know lying is bad, we know sleeping around is bad (even polygamous societies have a concept of infidelity).
In short, being nasty to someone is bad in all societies.
You have to be taught that it is OK to kill. Small children don't see race, creed etc when they play - they learn that stuff.

Comment #170600 by Goldy on April 27, 2008 at 8:56 pm

In regards to moral standards. How can a society sustain if there are no acceptable universaly agreed upon standards? If we all have our own, then anything goes. There is no right from wrong.

Slavery, segregation, apartheit, racial superiority - all happened in living memory and all seen as good and proper. Indeed, justified by "The Good Book"
There is right from wrong. It is taught and learnt. Sometimes, right and wrong change over time. My great great grandfather probably didn't think slavery right but he probably accepted it. Early Tahitians saw nothing wrong with open sexual congress but thanks to western missionaries, they do now.
We all know what is good and bad - we are taught the morality of each by society.

You all like to downplay God's power and authority, and make it seem like He makes really bad decisions for Himself. When you are God, then you can determine that. You're not God. You're man. You are trying to reason within yourself for why things happen the way they do. You'll never figure it out. You have to give it to a higher power eventually. Of that I'm very sure.

Aaaah, the old "God works in mysterious ways" line. Yet somehow, a bunch of ardent Christians are party to his purpose, indeed, so sure they know what his purpose is they have to try and interfere with everyone else. Jews are wrong, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, even other sects of the same religion - they're worng and have not understood his message.
How do you know we athiests are not doing God's work?

As it is, there's light sensors, compound eyes, our eyes, molluscan eyes.... to name the ones I know.
And don't forget, evolution is a part of an arms race. If you have something that gives you the advantage over the others, you succeed. Good eye wins, poor eye loses. Good eye has heaps of babies and eats poor eyes.... get the idea?

I realize, that a far more number of scientists are pro evolution, but it seems that the ID scientists are able to poke holes or weaken the Evolution theory enough to cause doubt, at least to me.

Given science is much more evidence based than faith based, shouldn't this tell you something? I'm curious as to what evidence ID give that poke holes. Seems to me everything is rather successfully refuted and evolutionary explanations given.
Yes the lack of true scientific, observable, Etc. for ID is true but should I automaticaly accept evolution?

No, of course not. Every testable hypothesis is gratefully accepted (massive egos notwithstanding! And there's nothing like a groundshaking theory to get those egos on the rise!). For 50 years, the Piltdown Man was accepted before someone had the temerity to actually do some testing. If there is something to ID, we'd love to hear it.
Is it not career suicide?

Behe, as far as I remember, is still employed. So's that bloke in Leeds.
It's just that we all know the Designer is God. Christian fundies thought this theory up, Christian fundies promote it - what are we proper scientists to think?

If I may...yes.
OK, ID can get away with stuff, but don't complain if your theories are refuted successfully. If the square peg didn't fit in the round hole the first time, it probably won't. Trying to cut the hole to make it square is cheating.
Cretinists (sic) are idiots. How can anyone believe mythology to that extent? The Earth is only 6000 years old? C'mon! A god sent flood? Puh-leeese! There's enough scientific evidence for flooding after the last ice age to explain the story.
And living in New Zealand, trust me, 40 days nad nights of rain do cause flooding, but not in the apocalyptic proportions cretins will lead us to believe.

"And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."

Bold text seems to imply plural. A pantheon of gods? Besides, this is just Adam and Eve. What about the people he made on the sixth day (read Genesis - Adam made after day 7 to till the fields and Eve made days after him). Why did all the others have to suffer? And if God, in his infinite wisdom, didn't think putting the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden wasn't going to cause a problem, what did he expect? After all, Adam and Eve were only human, etc, etc. Heck, putting the Tree of Life in the garden was really asking for trouble.

I'll still pray for her. You can't do a thing about it little man.

That can be construed as rape.

Edit. And why pray for others? They may have their own gods, gods who, like God himself, are jealous. Your prayers for some small child might cndemn that child to eternal damnation.
You also mentioned false religions (or words to that effect). Christianity is a false religion to many - indeed, calling Jesus the son of God is blasphemy to Muslims as God cannot have children, his children cannot be God as there is only one god and Jesus, if anything, was a prophet.

Quoting scripture is a bit pointless, you'll find. Of course they say stuff like "He that turneth away from God is condemned to eternal fire" and "God is sooo nice that he liketh only them that follow him and killeth those that mock him". Pure spin, old boy, pure spin. I believe the Jews use the self same lines you've given us to prove that Christians are the children of Satan and will be forever damned. Using NT scripture is pointless - might as well quote the archbishop of Canterbury for all the connection Paul or the Gospel writers had with Jesus.
Speaking as you do with a heady wiff of brimstone makes me have a mental image of you as one of those Mormon sects that were arrested recently (actually watching some program on it on TV right now). Or Westboro - having seen Louis Theroux's doco on them, you are veering very close to what I'd term religiously insane. Go back to that person you were just recently. I liked you there and felt you were someone I could actually talk to.
Iliad:7, 272-274: Ajax, royal son of Telamon, captain of armies, don't toy with me like a puny, weak-kneed boy or a woman never trained in works of war!

Do you expose your child to the Bible or just atheism?

Be honest

Living in New Zealand, I can't help but expose my daughter to Christianity. Some of the fairy tales before going to bed are Biblical. She does Christmas and Easter and I guess she gets told about them and why. Hell, even the daycare we put her in tells us that she is "a gift from God".
However, she also has her Chinese ancestry and I am sure when she's older she'll be getting exposure to Buddhism. There's quite a large temple near where her Chinese grandparents live. When she's older, I'll also be reading fairy tales from the British Isles (not yet - no pictures. Given her attention span is still not up to looking at words....), I have the Iliad on my shelf and The Three Kingdoms also awaiting her enjoment :-)
Yep - she'll be exposed. I was - my father has always been an athiest, my mother not the best of Catholics, but they sent me to a CoE school. Chapel every Sunday (I can sing along to pretty much every hymn still), God's "message" drummed into me, Jesus is my saviour, etc, etc. Didn't work - my mind doesn't work that way. If I am made in God's image then he has a questioning mind and is a seeker of rational truth. Whatever, for this I shall be damned for all eternity anyway :-) As, I hope, my daughter will too.

I know how scientists like to disprove other's work but I also know about the censorship, peer pressure, and dangers to one's career for not towing the neo-Darwinian line.

You can pretend it isn't so, but it is.

I worked in the department of Pharmacology in Auckland University (I'm in Molecular Medicine ad Pathology now) and I have to say the PhD student in our lab was an ardent Catholic (Heaven forbid she miss Mass!) and the lab next to me had an ardent Christian lad I think you'd identify with. I think he was a creationist which confused me slightly. Anyway, they did their research, got their PhDs and you know - their religious views had no effect al all on their work, their research or their results. Their theses were reviewed by peers and marked by those of greater experience and knowledge.
Nowhere was religion a factor. It isn't. What you said above is utter nonsense - a person can fix a car with or without an ardent belief in God and the same is true in science.
If ID can be shown and independently verified, I'm sure it'll be taken seriously. Acupuncture is now. It's just that pretty much all of ID theory is easily shown to be false - even the irriducible complexity has been reduced to lesser complexes.
It just doesn't stand up to scrutiny, that's all. Crying foul and moving the goal posts doesn't make it any more correct or less wrong. If you are wrong, you are wrong - accept it adn try and work around that by fair means, not foul.
By the way, the last few posts of yours has warmed me to you. Without that Bible thumpery, you actually sound like someone I'd share a drink or two with. Why didn't you come in like that?

AllanW, it is pathetic, isn't it. To claim victory by showing such brevity of thought and such inanity is the mark of a true believer.
I guess the rantings of a lunatic are attractive to some. Not me. I do engage with theists. I rather enjoyed Revcort a while back and Kardashovel does come across as saner than his voices suggest :-) Certainly saner than the gibbering droolings of those who wish to completely discredit IDiocy, Christianity, religion and the furtherment of American education.
Proof that there is no God, no gods no spirits or higher beings controlling us is shown to us in constant streams. That Jesus preaches truth, justice and other noble sentiments are shown to be false in such glaring light it hurts (oddly, all the quotations given to me and others that supposedly show Jesus' way is the right way are not even his views but those of Paul [and this is interesting http://unveilingchristianity.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/did-paul-really-meet-jesus/] who might, indeed most probably, never met or even saw Jesus).
How is this going to convince me? Why do they bother? They are driving me away and I dare say many of those "cultural Christians" who feel disgust and shock at the actions of those who wish to remain ignorant and ignore what is plainly seen before their eyes.

Lack of understanding of basic biology? Please validate comment. Precisely, where is my lack of understanding?

Pretty much all of biology.
There is no God.

We had an eruv story not too long ago. You can get around all these silly God-given laws by putting some twine or raising some posts around an area, call it an eruv and bingo - God doesn't know!

You know nothing about God. God is good and just. He created man is His image with free will. Man used that free will to disobey God. Man is fallen. All man is sinful. For example, you sinned quite a bit in your post. God is holy and just. He cannot allow sin in His presence for He is Holy. Man is separated from God. God is love. He does not want man to be separated from Him. He loves man so much he sends His only Son to live a sinless life, and die as a propitiation for man's sins. All those that accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are counted righteous in front of God through Christ's sacrifice. Salvation is by God's grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Many has a free will to accept or reject this plan of salvation. Those that accept it have eternal life. Those that choose to reject it choose their own destiny, separation from God. God is just in that he will give us what we choose. End of story

God does not exist.
America is way down the list in science and math because science and math instruction has been replaced with atheist indoctrination based on bogus and speculative science.

Yes, I agree. But don't call cretinism or IDiocy a science. It isn't. It is a philosophy. And you are contributing to it.

If all of you equate that the proof of micro-evolution is proof of all evolution then you are all more uneducated and misinformed then I gave you credit for. Wow!

Odd. How can one believe in evolution yet at teh same time deny it? I'm guessing it's the time thing. Micro over a couple of millenia doesn't, on the whole, alter the landscape too much. Over geological time, on the other hand...
Such an easy concept. Why are theists (more particularly this brand of American backwardness) so scared of it. Most of the other world's religious are very happy with it. Even the Pope (all of them, I think), heads of various Protestant, Islamic, Jewish, animist, Buddhist, etc, etc sects and religions are happy with it. It doesn't alter life - indeed, it creates it. Given man's propensity to displace and kill off other "higher" life forms (our God given right, as I believe), evolution allows for the world never to be sterile.
And they fear this?
I am, it has to be said, in awe of this stupidity.
IDiot, the NY Times article shows faith and the spread of AIDS in Africa. Guess it's neither here nor there to you. Africans, as you believe, are inferior to the white man and are generally good for menial tasks and for slavery.
