Steve-

but does personal possession of guns protect against use of guns by criminals?

Probably not. In an area where gun ownership was prevalent, wouldn't a criminal assume that his victims would be armed and therefore make sure he has a gun, the bigger the better?

Paula had a dream, that one day she would be the best reviewer of Flea books that there ever was. And now, thanks to hard work, perseverance, and the willingness to wade through page after page of execrable writing, she has achieved it.

Steve, all I was saying with these references is that other posters here have vastly outdone Robertson when it comes to abuse. I'm not as brittle as some people have taken me to be. In fact my point is that theists posting here have, if anything, proven less brittle than many of your fellow atheists, if references to Robertson's supposed nastiness are anything to go by!

AD, I disagree. While some posters are certainly more direct than others, few are genuinely nasty.

Robertson may not hurl out-and-out insults, but he is often no less nasty because of that. He specialises in snide insinuations, back-handed insults, misquoting and provocation.

Nobody will deny that he has made good comments in the past (long ago). But these are tainted by his overall attitude, especially for someone who claims to be "saved".

Artful_Dodger-

Does parodying Dawkins' conception of humans resulting from natural selection as "meat machines" really constitute "nastiness" as one poster seemed to think?

Was that the comment I reproduced? Are you saying that you DON'T think it's nasty to use the death of a child to make a jibe at atheists by suggesting that we somehow care less thanks to Darwinism?

I have just got back from hospital where I was visiting a 40 year old woman and her husband who had just had their first child. Got the phone call half an hour ago that the baby had just died. Somehow elephants in fridges seem somewhat trivial. At least for those of us who believe that we are more than 'throwaway survival machines'

That is why people think he's nasty.

Artful_Dodger-

you guys really do get pissed off when someone from that strange "fantasy (for you) world" of belief in God wanders into your unholy huddle. You have shown that you are incapable of engaging with arguments that you disagree with, and go straight for the throat of those who hold them

Can anyone else hear violins playing in the background?

AD- if anything, you have shown yourself to be both incapable of dealing with challenges to your beliefs, and unable to provide any evidence to back up your assertions. Everyone else can call me Mr Cynical if they like, but I strongly suspect that your flouncing off in supposed solidarity with Clearthinker was merely an excuse for you to avoid dealing with the questions that had been put to you.

Paula-

in my days as a Pentecostal there was one woman in particular who was an excellent example of this. Every week during prayers she would stand up and literally go into hysterics, screaming and crying and thanking God for "saving" her from being such a wretched sinner.

I was only a teenager at the time, and to my shame it used to annoy me more than anything else. Now I look back and wonder what the effect must have been on her three children.

I absolutely agree with you. We have to counter the notion that the atheist worldview is nihilistic and without hope. If anything, teaching people that they are sinful, loathsome and damned from the moment of conception is far bleaker.

Comment #134966 by Quetzalcoatl on February 28, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Paula-

it seems to me that, if anything, Robertson's notion of "polluted" humanity is infinitely more depressing. I can't imagine what it would be like to be taught from early childhood, that you are flawed, sinful, imperfect, that everything bad that happens is all thanks to humanity. When I attended church I saw people who genuinely seemed to intensely loathe themselves for their "sinful nature". To blame human "sin" for natural disasters is a disgusting way of keeping God from taking the blame.

P Murdock-

perhaps this thread might seem that way to a newcomer. But I'm sure you've read for yourself that many of Robertson's comments are deliberately couched to be provocative and insulting.

Robertson has "contributed" to this site for a while, and has earned the ire of many not through the brilliance of his points, but for his obfuscation and deception. Check out the comments under his previous pseudonym of "Wee Flea" for examples of that.

If you want intelligent chat, all the other threads have that in spades. So does this one, since a lot of it has stemmed from the excellent article by another contributor.

Clearthinker-

Yes please do enlighten me. I took it that Lorien was saying that all of the greatest scientific and philosophical minds in history. And given that we are talking about my theistic views as opposed to her atheistic views you will I am sure forgive the misunderstanding (if such there was). Please tell me the differences that make a difference to what Lorien was saying. And let me know what she was trying to say.

Firstly, Lorien Ryan is MALE.

My original comment-

Clearthinker said-

I was responding to the claim that " all of the scienctific and philosophical pursuits of the greatest minds in history" were on the side of atheism." (Lorien 936). Something that is demonstrably false

Lorien's actual comment was-

If you really tried to be an atheist, objectively considering the evidence, and you really think that the notions in your mind are greater evidence that all of the scienctific and philosophical pursuits of the greatest minds in history, well, what can I say, bring on the ad homs

Sigh. Lorien Ryan was NOT saying that the greatest minds in history were atheists. Some of them were, many others were not. This is obvious.

What Lorien was criticising you for was thinking that YOUR notions somehow provide greater evidence than those of the greatest scientific and philosophical thinkers.

(Lorien- apologies for speaking for you. Point it out if I've gone wrong).

Juxtamonkey- (at the risk of sounding smarmy) you are currently my favourite poster on this site!

A furious noodle came to all of those that refused Quetz and Juxta--THE GOD-GOD

And the terror of Kevin Jones was intensified when he gazed upon the furious noodle and saw that it had been torn from the lesser god-ling known as the FSM. And his murderous kittens were stricken by panic and fled, and were drowned within the Sea of Earwig Tea.

And the people witnessed this and did praise the God-God Quetz and Juxta. And those who did not were stricken, and became inexplicably fascinated with the contents of each other's ears. Then fire burst from their ears and consumed them utterly.

And the God-God looked upon this and spake the sacred words: "I/We do love a good barbecue".

There are guys over on my blog who believe in the "eternal separation from God" thing for Hell. This baffles me somewhat, as I can't honestly understand how that would be so terrible. What is the difference between that and the way I am now? I don't hear God's voice or feel his presence. Am I not separated from him? If not, in what way am I still joined to him? Strange.

Sorry to be pedantic, but not quite. If we found a fossil of a T-Rex looking up at the sky in horror as the meteor approached, thinking the dinosaur equivalent of "oh bugger!", it could not honestly be thought of as transitional.....

I disagree. The T-Rex in question was obviously making the transition to extinction.
