Rkelly,

*chuckles*

He likes to argue. Most of these argues seem like they are ones that he has overheard, and not really researched. So he doesn't have a clue. His argument style is similar to kids in school arguing democrat vs republican based on what they have heard their parents say.

Why are you giving us the bird in your avatar? Are you always so classy?

Not my classiest moment. I meant it in good faith any way. See how happy I am?

Oh, I don't know, nor do I really care. I just like arguing

Yes, that is quite apparent. Perhaps you should pick your arguments more wisely and think them through however.

Peace,
I suppose you saw the coverage about JJ saying some not so pleasant comments in regard to Obama. Fuckass.

I think it's about time the NAACP got rid of a lot of things. I'm surprised they haven't banned certain parts of the bible. I think they should stop focusing on how "they're people" are being treated in America and focused elsewhere. Ya know?

we should make sure that factors which gave rise to the much needed (and much misused) feminist movement are no longer there.

There is still a real need for anti-racist or anti-homophobia organisations and movements, for example.

You're right. There isn't however a need for the NAACP or Jesse Jackson to raise a big fucking stink everytime someone makes an opiniated comment about a certain race.

Comment #217425 by thewhitepearl on July 24, 2008 at 10:38 am

, Where are you getting that the feminist movement ignores them?

Gee for someone that self-proclaims "vaginaphobia", you sure are awfully worked up on the subject of that which you claim to not be able to stand for a long period of time.

If a feminist is focusing on something less egregious in our own culture it doesn't mean she's a hypocrite for ignoring horrendous female abuse overseas,

Actually, einstein that's actually what it means.

where she has no power to effect change

Maybe not individually, but the thing about feminists is they come in packs.

Comment #217417 by thewhitepearl on July 24, 2008 at 10:29 am

think what al-rawandi is getting at is that feminism is becoming an outdated concept and is almost self contradicting.

Humanism encompasses us all, regardless of gender, race etc. Thus we should be prioritising our action towards abuses against humans according to those that do the most harm. By subscribing to a concept such as feminism, you (somewhat ironically) propagate division and give rise to 'silos' that are part of the problem in the first place.

You said exactly what I was trying to get at in my first post. And would have formulated into words as soon as the rest of my brain woke up. But EXACTLY!

The militant, rabid, and anti-porn variety is a thing of the past, unless I'm missing something...

Even the white pearl gets attacked for no reason that I could see.

Did I? By whom? I dont remember being attacked at all...[scratches head] hmm

Maybe I read Dinah's comments wrong, but I read them as meant to concur with and support previous ideas expressed in the thread re: the vulnerability to Islamic conversion that stems from some men's painful feelings of failure with women and sexual rejection.

She wasn't talking about that at all. She used it as a jumping stone to release some pent up aggression about men. Go back and re-read what she read, it really was just stupid. I think the only other time she mentioned the islamic converstion bit was when she attempted to use it against Al.

On a related note, the animosity towards "feminists" in some of these threads disturbs me.

My animosity towards [most] feminists simply stems from the fact that they are a bunch of whiny, nit picking, spinless, attention seekers. Especially here in the states. They are so preoccupied with what goes on in the world of female equality and rights, they forget (or maybe just ignore) what goes on in the rest of the world.

I also just have a slight issue with a labeling of rights. For a very basic example, instead of saying "equal rights for women" or "equal rights for african americans" i think on the line of "equal rights for all human beings." I could try to explain that better, since I'm sure it barely makes sense as it is, however I'm going to need to obtain some java.

Why would a human?

I do believe however, I could be wrong, but clownfish tend to have life partners.

Brian,

Oh yeah they do..I read up on all kinds of animal sex and such on pharyngula. There is a certain type of female fish that also looks for who has the bigger package, so to speak.

But, I'm still wondering why, evolutionarily speaking that is, us women have/had a hymen in the first place.

It's vestigal. There really isn't a point anymore. The same reason we have tailbones, get goose bumps, men have nipples, etc etc.. Just leftover traits that don't serve a real purpose. At one point it did, but it's not something that is threatning to our survival so we don't need to weed it out or get rid of it. But like I said, women aren't the only mammals that have it. It's not unique to us.

I know some people would like to say that god or whatever diety put it out there to serve a religious purpose but that wouldn't explain why other female animals have it as well.

On christianity vs. islam, I vote christianity, otherwise I would have been stoned to death a long time ago. At least in christianity i can pick and choose what i want to believe in from the bible and still be socially accepted. Besides, this is a christian country and all that jazz.

I wish richard morgan and joe were here to battle it out. Baby christian vs. baby muslim...Both over eager to spread their gospels. Meh but joe's kind of a headache.

Coco, were you lurking during the time of Richie Morgan? I cant recall you having the pleasure of being around the thread when he's around.

The hymen is a vestigal membrane. I don't think there are any definite known causes for it. We aren't the only mammals that have them however.

Decius,

The point YOU made makes sense. Dinah wanted an excuse to generalise. It wasn't how people react or respond. Hell it wasn't even comparing the two sexes in a rational manner. S/he clearly made a men vs. women observation. This is why we object.

Comment #216779 by thewhitepearl on July 23, 2008 at 2:05 pm

White Pearl's assertion that all sexually frustrated women automatically turn into lesbians and sluts is simply ridiculous, and she is swallowing another kind of (male) stereotype and fantasy whole.

Not really. I would say about 35-40% of the women I have questioned that became lesbian said it was a result of bad experiences with men. A lot of women just simply like the idea of an equally sensitive partner, and i've also heard them say "women know what women want" in terms of sex. Also, while I kind-of joking about the porn and slut comments.... Not really...

And I don't tend to swallow anything that results from male sterotypical fantasies, so you can take that assertion and shove it back into your arse from which it clearly came.

fucking feminists.

Apathy,

What project?

I certainly know this about myself - given a choice between going out on a Tuesday night to promote a free-thinking event and having a beer at the pub, I choose the pint

You could suggest the free thinking events take place at the pub. Kill two birds with one stone.

Until we can articulate something that we do believe in, that we do know to be true, and to which we can engage others, I think we're going to lose this war, because they care, and I'm not sure that we can get enough people on-board that do until it is far too late.

You know how I noticed a lot of religions sucker people in? They use the "feel good" thing. They do things that are good for humanity. Feed the poor, reach out to addicts, charity work..But they all do it in the name of their religion. Perhaps we would benefit in doing the same thing.

Some of the major foundations in the US that I can think of that promote helping out humanity are all rooted in a religion cause.

This really should change.
