I am starting to see Christians using "What if they attacked Mohammad?" as an excuse for censorship, capitalizing on the extreme and aggressive reactions of muslims. That's not good.

Ironically, atheism is the default position in Sweden, so default really that if you officially claim you are an atheist people will start to question why you call yourself that and assume you have some kind of hostile agenda against religious people.

"The Labour Party grew out of the trade union movement and socialist political parties of the 19th century, and continues to describe itself as a party of democratic socialism."
Yes, I know, wikipedia, yadda yadda, but blame them if you think I was incorrect. And as I said, the old movements have evolved.

NMcC, the most sucessful european countries had socialist movements which evolved. I would not say that Britain, Germany and France are in "disaster" and they are all lead by their socialist party atm.
The Swedish Social Democrats gave Sweden a very strong economy but then tore it to pieces in the 90'ies, leading to them loosing the election 2006, ironically to a party that adapted social liberalism.
None of theese still support hardcore socialism even if they once did.

NMcC, ironically I had to use my dictionary for the word "impeccable" :D
I cannot help but comparing your comment on socialism to what is said about religion, that it can move far away from it's core dogma and still call itself socialism and people cherrypick the philosophy and apply it to their own social landscape. I know many distinct agendas in Sweden, all calling themselves socialist but quite different on their point of view. Even nazism is an alternate name for "national socialism" even if they have little in common.
I took a search for "Socialist Standard" and I found some comments about it, but no actal magazines. I noted it's published by british socialists.

NMcC, you can study the socialist movement in every country all over Europe and Asia and you will find a very different story from each country. In most european countries it was the socialist movement that introduced real democracy with voting rights for workers and women.
In Sweden, abolishing the feudal system was not enough. Prior to 1921 workers had almost no rights. Considering my roots I would personally not have voting rights if it was not for the social movement. This does not mean I am a socialist, I consider socialism to be a philosophy that did what it was meant to do 1-2 generations ago and now I vote for something else.

I gave up on NMcC. Yes, I am a Swede.
I am not a socialist. I have an interest in world philosophy, culture and history and I try to take an unbiased standpoint when I can. The "born equal in the USA" line refered to USA not having separate laws based on social class, maybe I should have pointed this out. If this is untrue, tell me so.

NMcC, in old Europe/Asia your rights was determined by your bloodline/family, not what you could pay for. If your mother/father belonged to the lower class you had literally less legal rights than if your mother/father belonged to the upper class. Insulting an upper class could lead to death penalty while murdering a lower class could lead to a small fine. While the system softened up bit by bit throughout 1600-1900, Swedish citiziens did not get equal legal rights and free democracy until 1921, prior to that workers (majority at the time) had no rights to vote. Most European countries have gone through the same revolution.
The US might have problems with poverty and unfavorable laws depending what you and your family can pay for, but they have never had a class system where citiziens are branded with no rights for their whole life just because they were born by the wrong parents.
As for the rest of your reply, switch to decaf. I have been active on richarddawkins.net since the site went up.

The comparision between atheism and communism is profound ignorance. Whenever I see it I can only shake my head over the lack of formal education of theese people. Really, already as a young adult you should know exactly what communism is and there's good excuse not to.
To even understand socialism one must understand European and Asian history where people were divided by class. Unlike the US where you are born equal, if you were born poor in Europe/Asia you belonged to the bottom class for the rest of your life. One must also remember that among the upper class, priests was included and even controlled the countries next to kings for 1500 years. Beyond that, church was used to keep the poor from rebelling against authority. In most places socialism suceeded peacefully, abolished the class system and eventually turned into capitalism. In some places, socialism was blended with absolutism and as always when it comes to absolutism, things get ugly.
An atheist deny god while a socialist fight the class system and everything that represent a "class". That's a huge difference. You can be communist and christian at the same time, in fact many in the old days were.
The connection between Atheism and the Soviet Union/China is as profund as calling any christian a muslim because they believe in god, or automaticly assume that thoose who speak against dictatorship are anarchs.

There are more than enough to disprove the organised religions so I really do not understand the whole "prove/disprove" god deal. Who cares about god when you know that the abrahamic religions do not describe true events.
You believe in a creator. Then what? You do not know the creator is, what he/she wants... You can look in the bible but that's not based on true events so it wont help you at all. In fact, you have to completely forget all concepts introduced by that book such as afterlife, ten commandments etc. You are completely blank with nothing to go on. Then what?
Oh, so you are going to hold on to the bible anyway. Well, that's when you are DELUSIONAL.

Religion consists of two kinds of followers:
1. The political agenda
2. The flock
Stopping freethinkers (freedom to think) from questioning the political agenda is important for thoose who want to own the world, and yes, we have a corrosive effect of the voters who they need to take power.

While Dawkins approach is to label god as illogic and something you wouldnt believe if you think it through, Hitchens approach, like Sam Harris, is more focused on the direct damage that religion creates in this world. His book is great ammo, creating an understanding not only the problem with Christianity but also tells us why the eastern religions arent better. To build my library even further I also grabbed "The Christ Conspiracy" by Acharya S, a few lectures by Bart D Ehrman from the Teaching Company as well as a swedish book called "The Jesus That Never Existed" (Den Jesus som aldrig funnits). I also grabbed Bible Unearthed. I am thinking about ordering The Truth About Mohammad.

The basic human needs...
We stand for the right to not be discriminated based on who you are, and this is written by a WOMAN one of the groups that religion discriminate the most...
We stand for human rights and modern morals and understanding. We stand for the need for knowledge and truth, thus we oppose the religious attacks on science, schools and critical thinking. We stand for the idea that all are born equal, but heavily separated by religion. We stand for the need for peace if our species should be able to prosper, not battle eachother out on religious grounds.
WE stand for the basic HUMAN needs, not the basic religious needs.
