Geoff, I got a good laugh at your wooter comment.
Maybe that's wooters' problem; he's putting his native tongue through a bad translator into English.
On second thought, he's probably just an idiot.

Jesus Sarcologos! It's hard enough keeping up with all the brainiacs at RD.net, now you're posting in Latin.
Could someone please point me to a good free online Latin to English translator? I've found this:
http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_translators.php?from=Latin&to=English
But putting in Cartomancers poem comes out as:
The flea depraved scales to write , Upon from nichil novel dixit , Donation us , unskilled bard , Sophism , not truthfulness. To believe himself redarguisse , Argumentation she holy mass , But drives him moving through defendant , Upon fatuitate her : Her free is upon territory , Nugatoris to hominem , Odit too much Dawkins our , Vast system bolt. This is a British expression and confused me at first. See this thread from Dec. 2007 for more clarification (and an in-depth analysis of the use of the word piss):

Where does that come from and what does it mean?
Not that I'm some some big fan of Kurzweil and trying to defend him, just trying to point out the positive things he's done.

Not only is Kurzweil an amazing intellectual, he's made a huge number of career and technological achievements.
How many of us can claim 16 technological firsts, over 17 patents and founding/co-founding 10 companies, just to mention a few things?

I think the negative comments on this thread are unfounded.

Thankfully we won't have to wait that long to have sex with them.

Fundamentalists (aka, conservative Christian Republicans) always use the "hate America" slogan on anyone that doesn't follow their narrow-minded religio-political view. It's the same brain mush that comes up with the idiotic "homosexuals threaten traditional marriage and family" and "terrorists want to destroy America because they hate our freedoms" and "the French hate America", and so on.
When a rational person thinks about these they make absolutely no sense. For instance, how does a homosexual threathen "traditional marriage?" They don't, unless we're talking about someone like the Rev. Ted Haggard, who is a closet homosexual. Even then the idea is still nonsense.

You remind me of comedian Jim Gaffigan when he says (paraphrasing) "I'm a vegetarian. Not a strict vegetarian, I eat beef and pork...and chicken, but not fish, that's disgusting. ...Don't get me wrong, I love animals. I just like them better when they're cooked...because they're delicious..."

By the description on page one of this thread, it appears as if this kid only mentioned the website to other kids?
As far as getting your son's school involved, they probably would not be able to do or say anything, since this (unfortunately) is a 1st Amendment/free speech issue. If this kid had given your son a religous tract, or brought a laptop to school and was showing others the video, that would be something you could tell the school.

Comment #116350 by markg on January 26, 2008 at 9:41 am
My wife and I made a decision before our son (now almost 3 yrs. old) was born not to have this done to him. We researched and found it is medically unnecessary and really only a religous or cultural thing. Here in the U.S. I think less people are choosing this these days than previously.
That didn't stop my mother-in-law from calling after he was born and asking why and making comments such as, "won't he be embarassed in a school lockerroom when he's older?" As if that were a worthwhile reason for a circumcision.
However, when my son is of legal age, if he should chose to have that done to himself, so be it.

To paraphrase Robert Di Niro's character in (Heat,) "I am alone, but I'm not lonely.
Yes, some of us are confusing loneliness and solitude. I think Sam Harris is refering to solitude when he talks about meditation, etc. He probably uses it to disconnect temporarily from the stresses of everyday life.
I can understand both. I was raised in a "Xtian home" (Northern Baptist - which is only slightly less nutty than Southern Baptist) in the U.S. I'm the only one of four children to have left that belief system and been "born-again" as an unbeliever. My mom used to say my sister and I liked to play by ourselves. My two brothers, however, would rather have had someone play with them. And my brothers are still outgoing and friendly more so than my sister or me.
Cartomancer, Home8896, Paula and others I certainly can relate to your comments. I lived alone for five years before I met my wife. I didn't have a problem living alone. I've been married 7 years, but still consider myself a loner. I have few friends and don't socialize that much.
My wife, son, job and all my interests (one being spending too much time at this website) keep me busy enough that I guess I don't feel lonely.

At first I took this as bad news in a different way - bible bashing dying out. In the states we call them bible thumpers. Bashing the bible would be saying something negative. Then I realized this must be a British expression.
