This reminds me of stories of those who assumed that while they were in a different state of consciousness they had some kind of revelation or thought more clearly....it was gibberish

That reminds me of T. McKenna's disciples

I will acknowledge that synchronicity beyond a reasonable doubt is some of the evidence that prepared me for my first conversation with God.

I think its been done... to death.
You seem to have suckered the more generous among those who visit this site into dialogue. I hope they do not lose patient to soon. Im afraid the poor loves are starved of quality dialogue.
A remnant or TITD is no mind stretcher.

All your posturing about time just underlines one of those yearnings common to all humanity which religious thought attempts to assuage. And you express this desire by imagining how to get around time.

Peoples have yearned to know how we got here, an explanation. This is now a discredited aspect of spiritual systems, though for a long time the explanation dreamt up by tribal ancestors held sway.

Another human yearning that was addressing by spiritual systems was a longing to escape/ be free of the boundaries or constrains in which we exist. Now that could be an approaching wild animal, a brutal overlord, an oppressive system, the thinking of the time, a perceived lack of understanding, flesh, walls, gravity, distance (or such as in your case) time.

Christianity addresses this rather crudely with jesus.

Anyway I thought all christains secretly crave death so they could spent eternity( outside of time and mortality) chewing the fat with YKW.

The job is to promote or even outright provide the ideas that will advance the plan, given the state of affairs of humans at the time.

The bible is clearly an important book, if for no other reason that it has affected so many people's lives and ideas for so many centuries. It does not need to be perfect, self-consistent, and the answer to all questions. It just needs to be good enough to promote societal growth in a certain direction.

The old testament provided a model for an insular and cohesive society, based on some very harsh laws, that would produce a society that could weather the storms likely to occur naturally or perhaps be induced by an adversary to this plan.

The new testament provides a model for a society that cooperates while retaining some measure of individualism and a personal relationship between the believer and the godhead. This model may have been corrupted by vicars (root word same as vicarious) and by ignorant twits like Dicky here... but the basic message shines through the tarnish: Love God, love your neighbor, love yourself.

The fundamental meme was powerful enough to capture the western world against the odds of savage persecution, and by the time that it was corrupted and harnessed by existing power structures, the root concept was spread too widely and deeply to simply bury (even with centuries of avoiding the vernacular). You may see the renaissance and enlightenment as being movements that sprung up in spite of the bible; I would disagree. But even if they are merely reactions to the bible, then the job has been accomplished.

The universities that were set up to study the word of God were turned to the purpose of studying God's creation, and modern science was born. The Greeks (and to a lesser extent) the Romans that made a foundation for science prior to the advent of Christianity were an aberration, not robust against the hunger of the teeming masses and the constant churning of political power. Christianity became the first truly transnational institution, providing a robust platform for the birth of science that could not be squelched by political maneuvers.

This is called standing on one leg and whistlin' dixie, one eye closed and squinting out the other one.

And science is absolutely vital to God's plan (as I understand it), for reasons that should be obvious to you.

Oh shit here we go into the Tardis again.

Some example of your gentle hypocrisy, the compartmentalising that takes place in the human mind when god is placed in a mental box all of his own.

I wish that more theists would consider the matter of the third alternative... But people get stuck in well worn ruts

Nor will I be moved by more gentle suggestions that what I experienced was all generated by my own mind.

OH MY Fucking Dog
Remnant you are fucking hilarious. I thought I was reading comedy, but the comedic value is in the fact that you and presumably others actually believe this stuff. Hope you dont mind if I just extract a few choice phrases just to highlight the hilarity.

In the pivotal event of societal evolution, beer was invented.

Neither the glass bottle or aluminum can had yet been invented, so it was necessary to stick pretty close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days killing animals to barbecue at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of the conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting, learned how to live off conservatives by showing up for the BBQs every night and doing women's work like sewing, fetching and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the liberal movement. Later, some of the liberals actually became women.

This part kills me, "some of them became women" rahahahahaha.

Modern Liberals like imported beer.Conservatives drink domestic beer.

The Beer the beer,,, hahahahahahahah

Conservatives have principles, believe in a Creator, and the rule of law. They practice charity and give to the poor, normally through their churches. When in doubt on an issue, they check both the Bible and the Constitution, which they use as a constant reference in a changing world. They believe in the concept of truth.

Liberals do not have principles, except for their dedication to stealing productivity of conservatives and undermining principled references such as the Bible and Constitution

rahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

Conservatives believe in self defense, both at home and abroad. They own guns and use them to discourage liberals and other common criminals. They provide guns to the armed forces to discourage foreign liberals and other foreign criminals.

Liberals do not believe in conservative self defense. They disarm conservatives, and then attack them with impunity by liberal armies with guns. King George, Hitler and Stalin were all liberals

stop it hahahahahahahahahstop itrahahahahahahahahahahahaha

hahahahahahahahahahahhaahhhahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha
oh deaar oh dear
remnant( a curiously appropriate non de plume) I dont know how to tell you this but my guess is the author of your TWO theories is in all probability the same person.
By posting this here maybe you thought you were being clever in a slightly contemptuous way. I doubt if you actually believe it, its very funny though, but no one except the most credulous would find it anything but a pisstake.

So is the author himself a conservative beer drinker?
lets take a poll?
By the way Remnant do you fart at the dinner table?
Thats a conservative beer drinking trait as well you know.
Better get to it.
slurp.... fart, sluurp ...fart.... belch...slurp ...fart.
hahahahahahahaahahahaha

Looks like ID wins again, which it usually does in debates.

No, what happened was you began stroking your knob in public, people on this site pointed out that the mental masturbation you were engaging in has been shown to be not feasible, but if you had any new evidence to present it. Because frankly such public displays do become unbearable to watch after a while.

But you just kept on parading your small member in public and everyone left. So now there's just you with your fly undone and your member, not getting the attention it craved, is now shrivelling.

This is called an analogy, you should ask your penis what that means.

And now I shall join the others somewhere else, where you arent.

"It's real. Just yesterday here, there was a man who was a victim. We saw. What was left was tiny,"

A man went into a police station and dropped his pants!
"A witchdoctor did this to me" he said.
The officers gathered around looking, but managed to refrain from pointing and sniggering. Then one finally summoned up the courage to ask the question that would relieve the tension and curiosity the officers felt.
"Which doctor?"

OK BAD JOKE!

Alovrin, if ignorance is bliss then your life must be like a non-stop orgasm.

Why are you so fascinated with me?

If you are really interested in what motivates me to post here, you could simply read what I have written on that subject instead of flogging your errant speculation.

Your bitterness betrays a deep inner pain. Perhaps you just need a good cry, my friend. Let it all out and I'm sure you'll feel better.

That is not an answer to my question.

I seem to be dealing with this sort of nonsense a lot lately and not just on RDnet.

And your "speculation" is so far from reality.
"Deep inner pain" pardon?
My "speculation" was based on motivations that have been unintentionally exposed as other theists have come to this site full of all manner of high sounding thingys and yet their motives are ALWAYS less than noble.

My mental acuity or depth of knowledge on any subject is always, as in yours, in need of updating, improving.
One of the reasons i visit this site, to learn and from those more learned on subjects than me.
The god subject doesnt fit that category.
So stooping to say I am ignorant is totally irrelevant

Now either answer the damn question, provide a link or tell me which post of yours explains why you as a theist visit RD.net.

Try addressing your questions to me.

You say god Talks? to you. Well people under extreme duress like a climber lost in a crevasse with his arm trapped hears? a voice that tells him that in order to survive he will have to cut off his arm. He does and survives. The mountaineer upon reflection considers the voice? was his survival instinct nothing supernatural.
There is always an internal dialogue going on its like our own white noise. Its what those who meditate are attempting to, Im not sure exactly what silence/ mitigate.
But it is not an external entity trying to get our attention, or guiding us, our actions, our beliefs.

The Saudis alone have enough oil, in currently discovered fields without new discovery, to supply the world at current levels for many many years.

And your source for this assertion is?
I am just curious last time I checked the Saudis were very keeping very quiet about their oil reserves, they were being very secretive.
Wouldnt allow anyone to actually check how much is left. But the Saudi's are pumping sea water into their oil fields (oil Floats) which means the oil is running low. And their inhibiting of letting anyone do an accurate estimate of reserves is a cause for concern. Mainly cause it means any planning is done in a vacuum.

I agree we wont actually run out of oil and the dispensing of the last drops at the bowser wont be televised. But it is more difficult to find and the costs of extraction are going up, which is one of the factors driving prices.

Comment #152371 by alovrin on March 30, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Of course religion is more than truth claims. But it's the bogus truth claims that have to stop. The other stuff can go on.

Did humans living, say, 300 years ago, create parodies of an enemy's parody? Perhaps not, or not often. One hundred years ago, people sat at desks and wrote letters in long hand by candle light. By the time you might lampoon your enemy's misrepresentation of you, weeks likely would have passed. Other interesting things would have happened. Anyone who might hear your response to some troubling response, would probably have lost the plot of the original disagreement.

Rapid, electronic communication and mass media have made possible reflection upon the meaning and significance of a dialog while it's in progress rather than afterward. I don't know how humans are being affected by this development, but I imagine it must be changing us in a profound way.

The postmodernist is fascinated by such recursive aspects of communication. I think everyone has seen how excessive textual deconstruction can lead to a frustrating sense of unreality. No matter how pretty the maps we make, the territory is where it's at.

Now I have to go as I have a job to do - a sermon to prepare for Sunday.

Weeflee reminds me of the backwoods preacher in the recent film "There will be Blood". Which has Daniel Day Lewis in a truly amazing performance. I would recommend this movie as a must see.
There is a brilliant scene where the preacher goes to tell Lewis's character how he wants to be introduced to the crowd at a gathering. Lewis listens patiently to his demands, then politely dismiss's him. Come the day his request is ignored/ or forgotten as he stands looking somewhat sheepish (haha)
with his tiny flock of followers in the crowd.
Brilliant acting and filmmaking.
David is as offensive and sanctimonious as the character in the film. Only happy when they are feeling "the power of the lord moving within them" and we lesser mortals are supposed to quiver with whatever awe/fear I dont know.
DR relies on personal revelation which is unverifiable to support
his claims about some type of divinity somewhere/everywhere.
This is no longer enough.

To form an actual real-world society on the open source model is not yet practical, because only a small percentage of people have the ability to master the still rather arcane tools.

Its amazing how words can make this massive problem facing humanity, seem somehow inconsequential.
Computers are arcane to many ..hmmm..

a conspiracy theory

What? I dont care if it was written with RD in mind. He is a good model for future holders of the chair.
Strong Dawkinsthropic Principle.

Your a funny guy Teratornis
I'm wondering when and how we'll get through to the unwashed masses as effectively as the religious charlatan industry

When there are science schools on every block? Religion has percolated down to the bottom of societies. Remember it used to be the domain of kings and elites.
There are a lot, and I mean A LOT of people around the world who still live surrounded by stone age beliefs who know no better. It will take many decades, does humanity have the time?
You tell me.

Charles Simonyi's fine brief sounds as if it was written with Richard Dawkins in mind. How fortuitous it was indeed, given what has happened in recent years that such a suitable person occupied this chair.
I hope the person selected to replace Richard can further the cause of truth in their field as Richard has done in the field of evolutionary biology, and on into related fields.

Excellent videos, the content was enthralling.
And compliments to PZ Myers, he fielded the many questions answering them all with the utmost sincerity and to the limits of his expansive knowledge. And acknowledged the limits of what is known.

Similar thoughts, as those expressed in this long winded article, occurred to me once or maybe it was three - four times.
I was at the time, at the very least drunk, which gave me an out - 'it seemed profound at the time' or (not that I actually let these words pass my lips 'you had to be there'.

But to see these idle thoughts (its what they are) presented in a kind of ??? apologist rhetorical flourish - in a ever so 'umble way of course.
Maybe g---d is " a glimpse so subtle........."
