Laurie

Hang (oops shouldn't use that word) in there.

Grant's a monster...hope he threepeats in the 1500. I was rooting for Jackie Lawrence in the kayak, but she seemed happy to get the silver. Too many of the kayakers having problems with the course.

Who hasn't lost their virginity to an Aussie lass? (runs slowly, knowing Laurie's in bad shape).

I don't have that book by Jefferson in my library, I have one by Thomas Paine with that title. (Common Sense)

Hi, I'm back

Stepped away to watch my Raider's 4th stringers lose the game with 2 seconds on the clock. Oh well, that's why it's preseason.

twp

When is Dallas playing?
I'll check out your utube and be back.

Damn, I'm glad that had a happy ending.

I've got to quit complaining so much about my pain. Does she have any residual pain? I hope not, she's been through enough for a lifetime.

You didn't drink enough water before going to bed. I've got something that would help you, but alas, too much ocean.

Do you ever get mistaken for the Romanian/Canadian boxer, Adrian Diaconu? I'm sure it happens a lot. Last I heard, he was 24-0, with 15 KO's. (plays Rocky theme song)

I read TGD with an Oxfordian accent, maybe that would have helped.

[edit] I read the old Testament with a Hitlerian accent, it's a riot.

OK, I was trying to be nice for a change. It was a waste of time obviously, if he can't get past the name-calling and make some legitimate arguments, what's the use.

So, Durant, specifics about what Richard has said that you disagree with so vehemently?

I don't agree. By the end of the 1st grade, I decided being a catholic was stupid, but I wasn't ready to give up the belief in god (scarey when you're 7, with hell and all). So I looked up agnostic in the dictionary and labeled myself such. Soon after I was a full blown atheist, but wouldn't tell anyone.

I've worked with some adult diaper crappers who, if they figured out how to use the crapper, it would have been quite an achievement. Although I don't think Durant is that mentally challenged, so he doesn't have an excuse.

His problem appears to be one of, "I can claim Dawkins is a charlatan, without knowing anything about science". This is just plain idiocy.

Hey, let's not bash agnostics too much. I was one when I was 6 or 7. I just weighed the crap the church was tossing at me and what I was learning on my own, and eventually I realized that there was absolutely no proof of any supernatural being. I can't hold it against someone else if it takes them a little longer than it did me. I just would not dismiss someone like Richard, without at least reading most of his writings, and obviously Durant has not.

Comment #230903 by mordacious1 on August 15, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Durant

So you're an agnostic. There are some rational thinkers that are agnostic too, even Prof. Dawkins says that he can't be 100% sure there is no god, just 99.99% sure.

What I don't understand, is your unwarranted attack on him. What's the purpose? Is science too difficult for you? Are you afraid science will remove your doubts?

I would think an agnostic would turn to science for at least some of the answers. Since Richard is one of the world's leading scientists, I would not dismiss him out of hand, unless I had some "issues".

Yes, agreed, still a lot of this knuckle-headed nonsense out there. The question is, is there more today than previously. I knew people of my grandparents age (born in late 19th Century) who actually believed that four leaf clovers, rabbits feet, lucky dollars, etc., actually worked. Of course, there are athletes that have their lucky socks, or whatever.

I don't know the answer, seems to be more skeptics today. That's just anecdotal of course. People laugh at people who go to psychics, though many still believe. I'm optomistic that we are seeing less of this nonsense. Any studies been done?

We've been down this road with Fanusi before. I've pointed out to him that xians have learned to be subtle about their destructive desires, eg. using a front-man or -country, islam hasn't matured there yet. That makes islam the easy target. I think both, or all of the big 3, are dangerous.

"Dawkins ignores the historical complexities involved in the relationship between science and religion..."

Nothing complex about it. Science looks at religion and decides it's BS, based on facts, religion cannot prove otherwise. It cannot be more simple.

All I can say, is thank dog for the Euro. When I would go to Italy in the '70's, their money would increase in size with value. You get a stack of L100,000 notes and your wallet wouldn't hold them.

I'm not sure where Newdow's case stands right now. The case you're referring to had to be dismissed by the judge because the 9th Circuit had already ruled in a similar case. I don't know if he's argued his appeal before the 9th Circuit yet, but I've heard him say that he will go to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he will lose because of a similar ruling by them. I think he's hoping for a 5-4 decision, which would allow a case to be heard in the future.

Michael Newdow lives in Sacramento nearby. He is usually (on talk shows, letters to ed., etc.) referred to as: That moron, the idiot who..., stupiest man on the planet, etc. This is from people who couldn't even get a GED. The guy is a lawyer and an MD, sounds stupid to me. He can be "strident", but hey, he takes his atheism seriously, as do we all.

[edit] and how many of those commenters have the ability to argue a case, personally, before the U.S. Supreme Court?

"Yet, today, society appears to be retreating from reason."

Are there not more atheists now than ever before? Are we truly retreating, or does it just seem that way?

[edit] I know my parents were alot more superstitious than I am (if I am), and my grandparents were more superstitious than my parents. I want to be optimistic about this.
