101. The camp that 'cures' homosexuality

Comment #262085 by Philip1978 on October 8, 2008 at 1:17 am

Ok!

Steve, Cartomancer, Bonzai, Rachel Holmes et all, look there is a cure for gayness - no more will you have to mince or act butch, Jesus will take care of you! :)

I am utterly lost for words at how utterly stupid this whole thing is. Corylus picked the right sentence, its a whole new mask to homophobia - making it all look nice warm and cuddly whilst at the same time spreading fear and misery about what should not even be a concern in this day and age.

Hetrosexual, homosexual, bi-sexual - one of them is the right choice for every individual consenting unrelated adult and nobody should be forced into thinking otherwise.

I mean how the fuck does this work?

Ermmm Ladies and gentlemen, don't be gay - really, just don't... you know, just shut it off, stop it right there... it will be good for you honest!

Do you want Jesus to get angry at you, do you? You sure as hell don't want to make his Dad angry, cos, yikes, when he gets angry... I just don't want to break this to you but I must...

All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the LORD your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.

But its ok, all will be fine if you just stop it now, I know you were born with it but hey, this is your soul we are talking about here! Besides, if you do give it up God will love you so very much for it and so will Jesus, then you don't have to worry any more about being gay!

See simple! :)

102. New Rules for Sarah Palin and Her Witchdoctor

Comment #260867 by Philip1978 on October 6, 2008 at 6:03 am

What really hacks me off is that Maher is absolutely right, if Obama was caught having the devils dragged out or his subscription to Warlock's Anonymous publicised then his balls would be dragged over the coals.

How come the rapture ready - just-had-the-witchcraft-ceremony - hopelessly under qualified ignoramus gets away with this?

I will bet, even more money than I would Man Utd vs Port Vale, that Palin's popularity will soar especially in religious circles, because of this. Some people are going to be nodding their heads thinking "yes, she made the right decision there!"

PLEASE keep this woman out of the White House, PLEEEEASE!

Yorker

Good day sir! Hope you are in fine fettle, by quoting Stephen Fry I get the impression you are!

I agree with you, I don't think I have ever managed to change a person's mind on this site - I have been incredibly polite and I have savaged a couple of people - needless to say I don't know if it made a dent.

I have had an impression on a few religious friends, that much I know I can do - I got them thinking about what they were doing and as you say, they managed to convince themselves out of of some of it later on. But that was face to face and over time on here its so much more different - you can only see my photo and intone from what I am typing and sometimes my point will not get across.

I still think it is important to keep trotting out the ideas though. I think its good that when religious people turn up here and intelligent posters provide some very helpful and thought provoking arguments. Without it I would not be the intellectual giant I am today....cough....splutter...hahahhaha if only!

My very best wishes to you and your wife! :)

Thanks for your comments, I will respond in kind.

1. Sorry, did I miss something in that sentence? He is telling people to hate everyone, including themselves in order to be his disciple. I have read the whole passage, it still says that the believer must be a masochist in order to follow Jesus.

Where you get love from? I don't know, does your god really deserve such respect after his son tells everyone to hate their friends, family and themselves? So the more bad things god dishes out to his worshippers, encouraging them to feel worthless and "sinful" - the more the better - whilst also demanding that they love him or end up in eternal punishment is a good thing is it?

2. Ok, I will go one further since you insist I don't know what I am talking about, I will elaborate some more.

The bible claims this:

Luke 11:9-10

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

John 16:23-24

I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Right, I want you to go ahead and pray as hard as you can, in the correct manner as shown above and I want you to then post the cure for cancer up on this thread. Ask and you will receive, you say it in Jesus's name nothing is impossible is it?

Or if you really want to surprise me go and move Mount Everest into the sea!

Prayer does not work! I can guarantee it, I can absolutely promise you 100% it does not work.

People do make recoveries from cancer, they do get their sight and hearing back, you are totally wrong to call it a miracle though. What about all the countless other faith filled people who died whilst praying to god to cure them? Why is it when lets say a whole bus load of people end up in a nasty crash, one baby survives and people call that a miracle? Why do people never stop to think that kid has no more parents left and god let them and the other passengers die?

Or lets look at the number of people who visit Lourdes in hope of a cure? Considering the MILLIONS of people who go there each year expecting to be cured and end up dying in relation to the people who made a recovery, I am sorry but the odds are stack heavily against you.

3. No, I am not advocating people being intentionally rude to their parents but you seem to have missed the part about that deserving a death penalty. Just because I sometimes disagreed with my parents, especially as a teenager, does not mean I have to be killed for it!

4. Sorry, must be reading a different Bible to you, I have the New International Version here:

Mark 12:13

1The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Gerasenes nearest lake is a fair distance away, so Jesus not only killed two thousand pigs by drowning them, he sent them on a terrifying run and impoverished a farmer! If he being the son of god and all, could he not simply have cast the demons back to hell?

I don't understand your comment about man being better than the beast, that does not make the slightest bit of sense to me. If this story is true then Jesus is shown to be irrational, cruel and evil - plus I would advocate you read Christopher Hitchen's God is not great, there is a lovely chapter on the fear of the porcine!

5. Have you read the Old Testament? Virgins are raped, children are killed, innocents are tortured - all under God's command through Satan or his Prophets - Moses being one of the more vile of the lot of them. Jesus is saying in that passage that he is completely cool with it. Jesus is effectively saying Yahweh, formerly known as El, was right to make up such vile and despicable laws as found in the book of Deuteronomy for example ( Go check out 13:6 or 22 or 28 for some truly vile ones)

6.
Can I please have a list of the 5000 people and their individual accounts?

Sorry, but you will have to do better than that.

The Bible is not a proper historical document, it is not Primary or even Secondary Evidence. It started off as an oral tradition, then the original writings were lost, the accounts were written decades after Jesus is supposed to have existed - I could go on for hours. Suffice to say I want evidence that backs up what the Bible so erroneously claims

I have written my views more extensively here if you want to know where my studies have got me so far about the existence of a Jesus of Nazareth.

http://teafueledmadness.blogspot.com/2008/09/council-of-nicaea-part-2.html

7. Live your life how you want, that's your choice not mine to demand otherwise. You can make all the claims you want about your god but be prepared to back them up with proper evidence and don't get offended when someone like me questions it. I am not out to have a go at you as a person, I am questioning why you want to believe in such highly improbable and contradictory things.

I have read evidence that shows the claims of the Bible are completely wrong, false and contradictory - I am a historian, I check the claims and see if it is backed up by the evidence, I don't see why that is unreasonable.

I have come to the conclusion that Jesus is an amalgamation of myths and stories collected from previous religions, especially from the near Eastern religions - Looking at the patterns of character like Moses, David, Issiah etc they all fit into the idealised versions of a king, a philosopher, a healer, a politician etc Jesus supposedly being the pinnacle of these things. The feeding of many people from nothing, raising people from the dead etc They are all to be found in previous religions and I am not surprised they mutated into Christianity. Yehoshua Mashiyach, the anointed rescuer, fits that bill rather too conveniently. I am convinced that his character was created by the imagination of mere human beings and not of miraculous events that are found in the Bible.

Sorry for the long post, I hope you want to discuss this, I am always open to new ideas, especially about Jesus. I have recently been looking at a lot from the 1st century onwards and I find it fascinating. Be good to hear from you.

Shit, don't tell me they were serious when they did that?

I would advocate a good Assam if you can get your hands on it, Ceylon is a fine Tea though!

Verylee

From what I gather from my Black Book of Tea, it is becoming a more popular drink, obviously never going to overtake coffee, but I am sure I can get Joe to see things my way!

Palin is too dim to even boil the kettle, I see no point in convincing her about Tea.

Hang on, Jesus Christ is supposed to be part and parcel of the Christian religion is he not or am I missing something from the word Christianity?

Notwithstanding his never existing, I think there are many good reasons to rage at Christ.

Up until his character arrived there was no such concept of hell - look at the damage that has done to people!

Jesus is a horrible character, how people see this as being anywhere near a role model after what his teachings require of a believer and his actions throughout the New Testament.

Luke 14:25

"Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.14:27 Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

So you have to be a masochist to follow him, how sweet.

He was a liar:

Matthew 21:21-22

And Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, `Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will happen. "And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive

Go on, I dare you to move Mount Everest into the sea, I bet you can't

For those that talk back at their parents he demands this:

Matthew 15:4-7

He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

He hates pigs and impoverishes a pig farmer by casting devils into a load of pigs who are sent on a marathon run, in pure terror to jump off the edge of a cliff in Mark 5:12-13

Does he reprimand his dad for all the vicious things he did in the old testament, virgin raping, child killing, murdering etc?

No

Matthew5:17 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

So tell me again why Jesus should be respected?

I am convinced he never existed in the first place because there is plenty of evidence to show this but I think his character in the Bible is truly evil.

Does it say Yehoshua Mi'Nazareth? Still no.

Anyone who gets excited by this is going to laughed at by me, I promise, I will be nice about about it, but I will laugh considerably if anyone wants to claim this as proof of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Reminds me of a rather lovely Marilyn Manson track called Fight Song (Apologies to Steve!)

Nothing suffocates you more than
The passing of everyday human events
Isolation is the oxygen mask you make
Your children breathe in to survive

Mr Manson then goes on to yell:

And when we were good
You just closed you eyes
So when we are bad
We'll scar your minds

What Mr Ahmad is proposing is precisely what Mr Manson is yelling about - Isolation.

You give these kids a single faith based education with all the trappings that the religion offers and they will grow up intolerant of other people because they know no different.

Further more, when they do get out in the real world there is every chance they will be offended and fearful about other culture's practices - Hence the lines about how whilst the blinkered view of the world can offend greatly - hypothetically if the world was really bad, really out to offend instead of doing it unintentionally, then the shock will be that much more accentuated and devastating.

This would teach kids paranoia, this would make them fearful of what they would not understand and I am completely against inflicting this upon them. If you have a better understanding of things there is less to be shocked by and the better you can cope with the world. I am not saying the world is a perfect place, especially in the west, but locking kids away in a one faith school is a bad and dangerous idea.

Mr Ahmad, I would consider your statement sir if I were you, I think you are very wrong indeed.

I hate this obfuscation and denial that what they want to teach has no religious agenda in the slightest - that's the biggest and hairiest load of bollocks I have ever heard of!

They act all hurt and victimised when called on it and I think it is beyond pathetic - I don't care how jealous they get, they should not be allowed to bugger around with science like this. I am only speaking for my part in this and hope you understand why I did what I did.

Emperor Misha's comments are scary, so is that whole site, as you have agreed in your comments about the site.

I, after reading Fanusi's comments felt that he had been defending the site and the people on it, claiming they were just off the cuff comments and that the site as a whole was not as people had suggested.

I was genuinely worried about his association with such a website and basically called him on it.

I wasn't calling Fanusi a racist, in fact I made it very clear that it was his defence of the language being used on the nicedoggies site and that he had best go and think about it.

From what I gather he has gone off to do just that and I hope he comes back one day to offer his views and opinions again.

I also think, in my humble opinion that is what Titania and the others were asking Fanusi about too and I would ask you to consider that.

Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe

'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,"that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'

This Jonathan Keats is wrong when he says:

On the other hand, I understand and appreciate the way in which religion can experience mystery, and can be a source of strength. In those broad terms, I have deep respect and sympathy for religion.

He has basically stood up and said he deeply respects people for being weird, mystical and lacking proper understanding of the world around them.

Ok, my reading if the situation is thus, take it or leave it as you will.

Fanusi, the nicedoggies site stuff frightens me.

Misha is not a nice person by any standards, I put him on the same level as Joe the deranged fanatic, just with less capital letters. Anyone who advocates the gassing or shooting of "pisslamists" does not deserve the time of day.

It seems to me, my own humble opinion, that the outrage he expresses about the people who attacked your father is the same as the outrage of the people who did attack your father. I see no difference from him to someone like Joe who thinks we will all burn if we don't convert to Islam and take on the views of evolution a rapist charlatan.

I have disagreed or agreed with a lot you have typed on this site, but I have also respected you for your knowledge and wit. Sometimes I have had to back away from the computer because of the ferociousness of the discussion, it does get very heated sometimes.

Once I called you on a comment you made which offended me greatly. The fact that you apologised very sincerely for it, tells me you are not full blown idiot and that you do see the error of your ways.

What I would like for you to consider, as most have suggested here, is that you take a long hard look at what you are getting caught up in on that awful website.

I'm not an authority on what you should do with your time or views, they are your own to keep. But if I screw up, if I say something or am found to be doing something wrong people on here are going to call me on it and they have in the past and I learned some valuable lessons from it.

All I am asking is that you take deep consideration of what posters are trying to get through to you about that nicedoggies site. That site really scares me, that Misha is spouting some very unhelpful and dangerous vitriol.

Think about it, you have called me on a number of things I have typed, you are a very perceptive man. You can pick out things which I never considered wrong but sometimes with hindsight I see what you are getting at.

At the moment I cannot see what you are getting at. I don't understand why you are defending a bigoted and hate spewing website.

I have always thought you were better than that.

Ok, lecture over, its up to you to decide the best course of action as to what you feel is right.

Science is based solely on doubt-based, disinterested examination of the natural and physical world.

I think he got it in one with this sentence, religion is not doubt based in the slightest as it assumes the god exists first before then trying to explain away the science of it.

How is a person supposed to examine anything in the natural and physical world using a deity that in itself somehow taken as fact before the further investigations begin?

Why is it these people refuse to investigate the deity first?

I liked this article a lot, very informative and I think written fairly and objectively. I think the Reiss incident was a tough one to consider but in the end I think, as Mr Kroto says here, it is pointless to approach science as shown above if there is any reliance on unfound dogma because it adds no significance to the discussion. Having somebody in that position, Director of Science Education surely cannot fit the requirements of the job in hand.

I do like the idea of cake though, I think I might go find some! :)

Oops, we know next to nothing, in fact most probably nothing at all about Science, lets interfere once again! We have it easier anyway, ours is the path of ignorance - God did it, that's all you need to know. Lets piggy back on the lab coats of really intelligent people and use it to our own advantage - Don't worry says Darth, you won't look stupid.

It simply doesn't occur to them to think there are other people on this Earth who have a right to disagree with them, talk about celestial dictatorship! :)

I for one would like to issue this statement to Darth, if he is reading this:

BUGGER OFF!

137. Creationist Britain (would you Adam and Eve it?)

Comment #250163 by Philip1978 on September 19, 2008 at 2:46 am

So let me get this straight- I understand from reading, hearing lectures, handling fossils, going to museums etc that there is verifiable scientific evidence to show that the above Creationist belief to be significantly wrong - and I am a bigot?

Sorry, but how did I manage this?

I checked the word bigot and here is what I found:

From the 15th century on Old French bigot meant "an excessively devoted or hypocritical person." Bigot is first recorded in English in 1598 with the sense "a superstitious hypocrite."

The modern definition is

One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

(Taken from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/bigot)

Ok, so I checked the available evidence, I found that it shows any religious intervention or assumptions made about the age of the Earth etc is either too complex and that simpler, more effective explanations exist or that they are completely wrong.

If I am to question this I am being intolerant?

There is nothing I can do about it, if its wrong, its wrong.

To hang on to such beliefs is irrational when the evidence that is available and has been demonstrated to be true. Am I not allowed to say it is irrational?

No, I am not a bigot, I am someone who wants to question irrationality.

I trust you don't need me to spell out where this would lead...

If its the Islamic version of a James Blunt concert fly me to the moon now! :)

Back to topic -

I too would be interested to see the break down of the different denominations of Islam in those countries where the violence could be rife and how many might actually oppose it.

Al

Thanks for that, highly informative as per usual from your good self.

Do you think this is possible, 50% by the end of the century?

I know the British Empire exceeded 2/3 of the known globe, various Empires under the Wromans or Genghis Khan were pretty colossal for their times.

I don't know about this -

Lets take an incident like Polio, correct me if I am wrong but did they not refuse the vaccine because it was suspected the doctors were there to sterilise Muslims?

With behaviour similar to this, the violence, the killings etc surely over population would eventually kill them off too?

Just me thinking out loud, what do you reckon?

Al

I remember seeing those, flippin heck that's not on is it?

Take this article - ban people from coming here because of a criminal, who is currently serving prision time, suddenly feels that special kind of "Islamic Hurt" that is unique to the more deranged of Islam believers. His book got shredded to pieces because it was full of lies and mis-information, big deal, grow up mate!

We have a situation involving vegetables a while back - oh the sexual allure of them carrots I tells yer! ;)

Then we have Farfur - an fundamentalist Islamic cartoon mouse who preaches Jihad and gets kids all warm and fuzzy about cutting thieves hands off etc

All this is completely matter of fact, yep, its fine, nothing wrong with this picture at all.

Then some Wahhabi crazed lunatic decides its curtains for Mickey, the soldier of Satan apparently - a 2 dimensional character on the tv, film screen or comic page that as far as I know not really done too much harm to this world, asides possibly that fiasco with the magic brooms - Is it possible to Jihad this sort of thing or should Disney mascots suddenly take up armed guards? (Keep smiling though, or you lose your job!) Who is next, the fearsome Care Bears?

Tis a mad world my masters, a mad world indeed.

Richard

Last time you appeared was on the 24th of July where I asked you a very simple question after you claimed your newly found deity was a loving one.
I said:

Richard I know a lot about God from reading the Bible and it is more than clear that he is not a loving God! I dare you to show me how his repeated acceptance of rape, murder and torture is in anyway an indication of a loving God.

You still haven't answered that yet, but I can wait because Quetz's questions need answering first.

hehehe I guess I shouldn't remind you about when you said this about David

When you're a pastor, being a two-faced hypocrite goes with the job, I'm afraid.
In fact when I compare myself with David WeeFlea the main difference is that he's wrong about God and I'm not. The other difference is that I would be thrilled to be proven wrong. But I'm not holding my breath.

Do you still think you know more about God than he does?

I would prefer it if you are going to post on here to actually comment on the thread at hand rather than keep popping up attention seeking in this annoying fashion.

I would also like to know what Robertson uses to decide between creation hypotheses and what value he places on the scientific approach.

When I think of that I get a headache, being able to hold creationism AND the scientific approach somehow together seems like quite a feat of mental gymnastics that is only to be performed by trained professionals. Look what happened to poor Hugh Miller for goodness sake, that's pretty harsh.

You do realise that if McCain shuffles off after getting into office Palin will be in charge?

I want you to think long and hard about the implications of such a happening - the world will be more screwed than a Soho whore on national pay day.

I don't know how much better Obama or Biden would be but at least the prostitute will be feeling slightly less sore if they get elected.
