It's one thing being a troll and not being funny, it's another when the troll is out to be offensive. I do not mean in the normal name calling sense, but he made a post on "Tribute to a Beloved Mentor" that was over the line. It suggested that Richard was posting this in order to sell more books. This guy is a real a-hole and I am suprised he hasn't been banned yet.

I would agree with you, if this hadn't been tried before. Everyone has tried to use logic/reasoning with him, and he just ignores it and goes on about his rants. The solution is to totally ignore him, as some have suggested, or throw an insult his way once in awhile. Ignoring is probably best, but insulting can be fun...
He probably needs more material for his next "book", and the man surely has to make a living off the mindless who would buy his drivel. (Ah, got my insult in).

"Unfortunaltely, the posters in this forum are really not that much different from posters in most forums, or people in general. People just like to give opinions on things about which they know little to nothing".
I beg to differ. Posters on this site fall into 3 types: 1) the type you mentioned. IMHO this is a small %. 2) Posters, like myself, who know quite a bit about science, but are not experts in everything. Hard to be polymathic today, with all the info out there. I make stupid posts, and ask stupid questions, but my purpose is to learn. If it is pointed out to me that I am wrong, I research the topic to the best of my ability, and become more informed on the subject. 3) People who really know their shit, ie. Steve Zara has corrected me on a few things in physics, not to put me down, but to teach. I appreciate it. A lot of our posters are Phd's or students in many fields. Generally it is a bright bunch.
I think your comment says more about you, than the posters here. No offense.
I've read alot about cold fusion since this topic has been posted. I think it is far from meeting "the test" of which you guys speak. The onus is on you to prove otherwise, and not just dismiss posters out-of-hand.

I've always thought that threatening your kids with hellfire or anything else that isn't true like this, is a sure sign that the parents lack any parenting skills whatsoever. This goes for corporal punishment too. The problem is, these guys are not as smart as their kids, so they have to result to something "scarey" to get CONTROL. It backfires later when the kid realizes the parent can't control him/her that way anymore and metaphoricaly gives the parents the finger.
With a rational upbringing the child will grow into adulthood respecting their parents.
Unfortunately, I don't think you can legislate away stupidity. If you outlaw corporal punishment, then they make threats. If you outlaw threats, then they will use something else just as abusive. Therefore: IQ tests for parents!

Yes, I realize your point. But the word "inflation", can be used either way. For example, Some suggest that we have: inflation, crunch, inflation, crunch...These guys use inflation to mean expansion, including the rapid inflation immediately after the BB. I know it's just semantics, but I prefer: rapid inflation, or rapid expansion for right after the BB. Then inflation or expansion there after, though you're right when you suggest that most cosmologists use expansion for the later time, it gets confusing for people who don't understand the diff.

This is one of those articles that makes me roll my eyes. The science behind it is probably good, but the wording annoys me. Journalists! The plant recognizes its kin (that you Harry?), it hunts its prey (okay, quiet everyone, so we can sneak up on this weed, GOT HIM! Yea!) and so on...
edit: Can plants learn? No, no, and no. Can natural selection prefer those that do a certain thing a certain way, chemically, mechanicly? Duh of course.
edit, edit: My mom, and many others, believed, that if you talk to your house plants, they grow better. I tried to explain, that if you're spending that much time with your damn plant, you're more likely to notice when it needs water or more light, or that it has bugs. Hence the plant grows better.

I like the caveat, that this is only the "framework of a theory". This area of cosmology is getting a lot of interesting info lately, but it's going to be awhile before solid theories can be put forth.
Does anyone know if this asymmetry was predicted by anyone? or was a complete suprise? I would expect the big bang to have been symmetrical, maybe because everyone else did. Interesting stuff.
"A rapid growth spurt called inflation". Well, that part I can argue with, inflation continues today, and hopefully for awhile still. Big crunches are hard to deal with.

This is off-topic, but why not, the article is so f-ing stupid.
Your post reminded me of once when I was renting a house from a fundie. He wouldn't let me even change a washer in the faucet, even though I helped construct a 3 story building previously. He would only hire people from his church. What a group of losers these guys were.
The best example was the painter. He only charged the guy $50, or so he said, to paint 3 rooms. First, he dribbled paint all over my clothes in the closet, I settled w/ the landlord for $500. Then he was painting behind the toilet, and his weight crushed the toilet, that cost $200 . Then he was painting the bedroom, and I asked why it was taking so long, and he said he had to put 7 coats on this "dark spot" and it still wouldn't go away. I explained that the dark spot was a shadow.
After all that, the landlord rehired him to seal my deck. He took stain and thinned it out with kerosene, so it would "soak in better". During his break, he lit up a smoke...well you know what happened.
After all this, the landlord still hired him to do more work because "he's a fellow christian and is doing the lord's work". I was moving out by then so I said "the lord does some pretty shitty work, if you ask me."

Trust me. Once your in, and if you're willing to "play ball", you can get all the action you want. Contrary to popular belief, these agencies often work hand in hand. From my personal experience though, you might want to stick to the analysis part, the rest can get very murky, morally. The one hangup for "action", if I read that word correctly, is that usually these guys are recruited from the military, proven ability to keep one's mouth shut and follow orders and all that.
Good luck with your job hunt. NSA probably has an online application. When I worked for them, it was still called "No Such Agency", but times have changed since "The Puzzle Palace" was published.
