1551. Would the World Be Safer Without Religion?

Comment #43854 by Philip1978 on May 23, 2007 at 1:10 am

Is that it? That was rubbish!

You personally question all the time? Who or what are you questioning because you can't be asking the right questions if the only answer is "I believe because He is god"

Actually there is a whole mega market of gods to go with, I dare not list them all but you obviously are oblivious to the world around you. Why not Allah? Thor? The Malaysian Tea God? The Flying Spaghetti Monster? The list is endless and yet you picked old Yahweh off the shopping trolley and I have a fair idea why, will get back to that in a sec but first, the bible!

This god of the bible, is it the one before Emperor Constantine and his mates got their hands on it or after?

The bible is the most inaccurate and contemptible drivel I have ever had the misfortune of reading. The Inerrant word of your god? How come there are so many howling mistakes in it? Hardly any of the authors can agree on anything and think about how many translations its been through to get to you, what are the chances it might have changed somewhat from it original form? People thinking, hmm, that could do with touching up a bit? Why is the god in the old testament a complete bastard to everyone yet Jesus pops up in the new testament saying, sure he loves you etc? Incidentally, on the subject of god loving you, can you refute that quote by Epicurus, I am sure you have heard it so I wont bother quoting it unless you want me to. In all fairness your god is still a complete sod and always will be, I hope you realise that one day

Right, lets think about this, a good example is the story of Jesus, the existence of this chap alone is pretty laughable since there are no historical records other than the bible and yet this chap is wondering around Jerusalem doing miracles whilst on his suicide mission for his dad.
However, you go back 2500 years or so to the Egyptians and you have the god Ossiris and funnily enough his story is remarkably similar to that of Jesus. He performed miracles, dies and wakes up fighting ready to launch himself off to heaven. What are the chances of this story spreading to Jerusalem? Pretty high if you think about it, most religions around that time were spread by word of mouth, told in stories and passed down the generations. That is why you will find similar stories from the Sumerians etc entering into the bible

Then, this is the funny part, in 325 AD the Roman Emperor Constantine and his mates decide to have a meeting in Nicea . They end up voting on all sorts of things including what should go in the bible and what should not, Jesus's divinity won by 4 votes! Now was this your god deliberating over this or men? Was this an Emperor realising he could have control over a vast section of Europe by simply declaring a new religion? They cherry picked the gospels, created the heirachy of bishops etc, easter... the list goes on. All of these festivals that you celebrate over the years are all pagan festivals anyway, simply changed to make it easier for the pagans to adapt to the new religion.

See this is why I dont believe in your god or anyone else's, humans created their gods, not the other way around. You tell me

"I believe in the God of the Bible for the same reason that I believe that the world is round, it is and He is." (You believe your god is rotund? Needs to eat less divine pies?)

But your bible tells you the world is flat and 6000 years old, dear me David, oh boy have you been committing heresy! You have defied the lord himself, he will not be best pleased!

Now tell me, would you believe that if you grew up in Islamabad or 2500BC Egypt? No you would not, you would have been told otherwise when you were a kid and you would have trusted the adults who told you which god to believe in.

Saying you believe because you believe is simply not enough, you are not questioning enough or even using the right questions. Reason with yourself, I dare you to be an atheist for a day, look at the world differently and see how it feels. I believed possibly when I was a kid so I have technically been a Christian but rejected it when I was about 8. It was prayer that did it for me, I stopped praying and the world did not change in the slightest. I dare you to do the same and see what you come up with.

Sorry about the rant kids but I am aghast at how little it takes for poor David to believe in his sky god

Please think about your next post and I look forward to seeing what you have to say, cheers, Philip

...Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers...

I admit I have a bit of a naughty mind, its what you get from studying Shakespeare and his double entendres, but is that insinuating that the god whom you can only "know" is the lord himself. I am simply curious cos to "know" someone in the biblical sense means more than acknowledge their existence!

Funny how someone can misconstrue the meaning of the bible, who would have thought that possible?!

Logicel, my heresy knows no bounds, for when I air my trousers during June I have been known to wear other trousers and even boxer shorts!

Therefore my corrupted and sinful mind made light of your husband's ways and "divinely inspired aplomb"! The chances of me repenting for my sins may happen when I could air my trousers with the right woman! But alas, I could be branded as having a copycat religion to that of your husband! So forever in sin shall I wonder!

WeeFlea/Knox/etc

Why my non belief in gods? I have evidence!

By the way, you are not my "enemy", I simply want a discussion

I used that phrase "dont question it" simply because faith is made up that way, you don't have evidence, you have faith which you do not question at all!

Right, on to your god, Why that one?

Comment #43382 by Philip1978 on May 21, 2007 at 8:18 am

Wee Flea/Knox/etc

The only reason "why the same atheist arguments appear in every book and on every thread in atheist websites" is because you theists obfuscate and give appalling answers like "my god did it, don't question it" to the questions we give out!

Again, I am going to ask the same question until I get the right answer

Why does it have to be your god?

Bizarro, I am almost insulted!

I asked you a very simple question, why does it HAVE to be your god? I rather thought that you could provide a better argument than "Because I and my book said so"!

If you feel that gracing this forum with an answer to a very simple question is beneath you, so be it. I will simply deduce that you can't answer it and are backing it up with delusions of grandeur!

Luthien, its god's reminder to us not to think about sex when riding a bike! Its in the bible somewhere at the back...

"And lo he rodeth his bike, with his mind filled with lusty thoughts about "knowing" the virgin next door. The man then didst almost runneth into his neighbour's father, who did begot the virgin and lo he had to stopeth most quick in order that he might not smite his neighbour with his bike. Forwards did he flyeth into his crossbar with his balls and cryeth did he with much gnashing of teeth and pain!

and god did sayeth unto him
"HA! THAT'LL TEACH THEE!"

On September 14, 2001, Milloy claimed that the World Trade Center towers could still be standing, or at least would have stood longer, had asbestos lagging not been removed in the years prior to 2001 due to health concerns. The asbestos removal was not mentioned in the National Institute of Standards and Technology's report on the Towers' collapse, which noted that the planes' impact dislodged any fireproofing that might have prevented the collapse
(Nicked this from Wikipedia but I think it proves a point)

Hmm, interesting chap this Milloy

Women, behave yourself!

Careful now Veronique, Logicel, Rachel, you obviously need a man to help you with your well thought out and highly interesting posts, your hatred of men means your intelligent arguments are clouded and false. My goodness some of you are even being funny, now that's a man's job for starters! Rachel, I know you are gay but that's beside the point, god doesn't like you for it and so you obviously still need a man to coach you along! Plus stop riding bikes, you are provoking men's lust hehehehehehe! Only religion can make such pathetic assumptions about women!

Bizzaro, Devolved, keep believing your god is great and the earth is only about 6000 years old, you are obviously right, being men of course!

Stop claiming your god is the only one to have bounced into existence, you have a whole host of others to fend off before yours wins the title of "supreme deity of the universe"! The argument "Its obvious he exists cos he always has" as you have noticed tends to gets the rest of us questioning your lack of evidence on this matter.

Why is it so difficult for your god to pop into a science lab, show how he does his magic under proper testing and then say hi to the world? I would have more respect for your god if he did, but alas, he went about it in the most complex manner and does not allow us mere mortals to question it!

I prefer interviews like that, let the person speak then ask some challenging questions in between, makes you feel the interviewer actually wants to hear the arguments. O Reily looked scared when interviewing Professor Dawkins, didn't let him say anything and spoke nonsense himself (Sun goes up...etc!) Bravo Mr Anderson Cooper

bitbutter, sorry, you are completely right there, he did say it at the TED conference and there is a link somewhere in the previous articles.

Comment #41398 by Philip1978 on May 16, 2007 at 4:50 am

Interesting article but I am really not impressed by the continual use of the word "Militant Atheist", its pathetic.
As Professor Dawkins said in his letter to the Guardian, he is passionate about what he does but he is not a fundamentalist because that would imply he would accept no other evidence other than his own.

Every time an article uses these words it simply staggers me, I criticise religion for its encouragement of violence and death to others in its most extreme cases. But the way these articles imply it Hitchens, Harris, Dawkins and Dennett are all after the blood of the religious and are inciting others to do the same!

I urge journalists to use the word passionate, militant suggests I could be encouraged go to war for these people and that is the furthest thing on my mind!

BaronOchs, another fine point well made.

I joined this site because I wanted to chat and discuss things with like minded and different minded people. The last thing I want is for all you atheists and people like Devolved, Bizzaro or even, good grief, the split personalities of Knox/Weefree/That Robertson chap! to walk away from this site thinking of me as anything other than a godless heathen!

Falwell was an evil and disgustingly opinionated monster, one of the reasons I think this was because his wishing death upon people who simply were not of the same religion and thinking as him. I would never wish death upon someone, disgusting as they are, if that's all they wanted to contribute to history then that's how they are going to be remembered. How is that for a punishment, being remembered as a monster? I don't know about the rest of you but I think that's much better than dancing on his grave

1574. Television evangelist Falwell dies at 73

Comment #41343 by Philip1978 on May 16, 2007 at 1:06 am

I have absolutely no respect for Reverend Falwell, he had no respect or decency about him and I will not mourn his passing, I am all for free speech but I hope I know where to draw the line. Bizzaro and Robert, I too agree with you, some of the comments on here have been pretty harsh. One thing that I feel separates me from people like Falwell is that I would not wish pain or death upon anybody. One of the reasons I am an atheist is I don't like it when people tell me I am going to burn hell or I should be killed for my lack of belief in their god. Baron Ochs made a good point about how Falwell chose to live that life, this is how he wanted to be remembered. Sad as it is that he devoted it to such a nonsensical waste of time.

My sincere apologies for not going along with the thread but I thought I would share this joke with you:

The 7 dwarfs went to the Vatican, and because they are 'THE DWARFS',they are ushered in to see the Pope. Dopey leads the pack. "Son," says the Pope, "What can I do for you?"

Dopey replies, "Excuse me, your Holiness, but are there any dwarf nuns in Rome?"

The Pope wrinkles his brow at the odd question, thinks for a moment and answers, "No, Dopey, there are no dwarf nuns in Rome."

In the background, a few of the dwarfs start giggling. Dopey turns around and gives them a glare, silencing them.

Dopey turns back, "Your Worship, are there any dwarf nuns in all of Europe?"

The Pope, puzzled now, again thinks for a moment and then answers, "No Dopey, there are no dwarf nuns in Europe." This time, all the other dwarfs burst into laughter.

Once again, Dopey turns around and silences them with an angry glare. Dopey turns back to the Pope and says, "Mr. Pope, are there ANY dwarf nuns anywhere in the world?" "I'm sorry, my son, there are no dwarf nuns anywhere in the world."

The other dwarfs collapse into a heap, rolling and laughing, pounding the floor, tears rolling down their cheeks as they begin chanting... "Dopey shagged a penguin!...Dopey shagged a penguin!"

Devolved, This is getting beyond silly, please provide the evidence that it was your god and not another one that happened to be passing by at that critical moment. Why is it yours got the intellectual property rights to the universe. That's all I want, proof! If you mention the bible you lose tens points!

Why all this ridiculous complexity involved with proving its your god, why not simply pop up and yell, "Yes, that was me, I did it"!

Your god cannot be tested so how do you then prove it was him/her/it, the answer "faith" and that holds no weight whatsoever. Faith is imaginary and by all accounts so is your god so how then does this have anything to do with the creation of the world?

So if you could kindly ask your god to pop his/her/its head around the door of a science lab and agree to have the "magic" tested to provide us with new methods of creating billions of life forms and knowing about their every move and thought etc. I and the rest of the scientific world will gladly go along with it all and actually give your god a bit more attention.

Devolved, please tell me how it is your god got the intellectual property rights to the universe?

Why does it have to be your god and no one else's?

The evidence for your god even existing, let alone the whole creation story, is laughable because he/she/it is never conveniently around to argue his/her/its case. You shouldn't have to defend your god, simply your god should simply appear, say yes it was me and clear it all up for us. No, he/she/it then decides to go about proving existence in the most elaborate and complex ways possible to the point where your god's own creation has a massive question mark hanging over it.

Again, why, oh why, does it have to be your god who did all this, I really would love to know!

Yet in his own blog space he wiffles about how it only strengthened his faith!

I doubt Wilson can come up with anything better than Hitchens if he thinks that us naughty atheists cannot understand how to truly behave ourselves unless we have "faith"!

Is Christianity good for the world?

Just been speaking to someone in my office, highly intelligent and simply great woman. She was telling me how the financial director's daughter is going to be confirmed this weekend as a catholic at 7 years old.
I questioned this by asking if it was the choice of the 7 year old or her parents forcing it upon her like they had done her baptism. I also questioned if she thought this this ever so slightly cruel.

The answer I got back will stay with me for a long time:

"I understand what you are saying but she can always choose later on if she wants to remain a catholic"

This is what Professor Dawkins has written about, here lies the very answer you need for the question of this topic. Christianity for the majority is forced upon children, choice is simply not an option unless the person in question wants to be forever ostracised from the family and community and be told they will burn in hell. I have heard some harrowing stories on this site and my heart goes out to all of you who have suffered.

Is Christianity good for the world? Never!

"too often, it is only the churches which bother to comfort the lonely and the dying"

Oh dear what was I thinking the other day, I am supposed to be a sneering atheist! I saw this disabled man crying on my way home and managed to comfort him with the help of a passing student nurse. I then raced around to where this man last saw his carer and eventually found him back with this man. I then sat around chatting to this man to make sure he was OK before I left. I am sorry guys, I seem to have let my fellow sneerers down.

I am supposed to have no morals cos of my total lack of faith, I guess I should have kicked him and nicked his wallet, waited for his carer to turn and give him a bit of a kicking too! I suppose its ok because I am going to hell for not helping him in the name of the almighty!

You can just imagine it can't you,

"OH MY GOD, ITS A .......WOMAN....erm, what do I do now? Huh? She accidentally brushed shoulders with me... MUST FIGHT UNCONTROLLABLE LUST...AAAARRRGGHHHH I AM BEING PROVOKED....!

What really makes me giggle is that their religions are supposed to be perfect-word-of-their-god-true yet they still have absolutely no idea how to be in the near vicinity of women, it all gets too much!

celestial_T,
I am glad there are other monkeys out there who don't know any better and like dried leaves in boiled water, you seem like a really hoopy frood who knows where their towel is!
Cheers!

1600. Ape gestures 'show human links'

I have always maintained that if creationists ever needed proof that humans and apes have a strong link I would simply show them a video of Liam Gallagher from Oasis, he even has the right hand gestures!
