152. Artist Builds Temple of Science
Comment #257988 by aquilacane on October 1, 2008 at 10:12 am
As an artist I would just like to say, damn artists! Art is a stimulus, nothing more. Any artist who needs to explain their art should be a writer. Art in and of itself is a statement. You don't ask a public speaker to clarify what they've just said unless it was a bad speech. Same goes for art, if the intent of the art is not inherent in the art, thus requiring and explanation from the artist, it is a failure.
As for the artist having a right to speak on science, I think he does, as does everyone. Many scientific endevours have been triggered by the ideas of artists and writers, their input is vital, I just don't consider them as an authority.
I would even argue that some artistic minds could be better adapted to visually realizing many complex scientific theories in actuality instead of just theory.
With regards to this guy, I think his idea is stupid only because I think all irrational symbolic worship is stupid. That's half of the the illness of religion, it has no place in science.
Change it from a temple to an education centre, and make the quest for facts its only goal, and I'll say OK.

Note:
I did not mean to say that the Golden Rule (religious) isn't also supported by non religious people. It's a good rule, most of us just assume it's a given past the age of 4. Kind of like saying if you put your hand in fire it will burn, or if you kick a dog it could bite. Very basic simple stuff here.

Another example for you Sciros:
The Golden Rule vs. The Golden Rule.
As an artist, when someone mentions the Golden Rule I think of the artistic concept of Golden Rule (also called the Golden Ratio), which is a mathematical algorithm for calculating the perfect ratio (something like 1.6180339887).
I don't think of the commonly accepted Golden Rule of religites, which is a warning against kicking people in the balls because they will kick you in the balls.
So, if an artist wanted to write a pro rational book about the beauty of nature not needing god, but decided to call the book "The Golden Rule is natural" he or she would be a fuckwit

The owner of the network probably thinks he is entitled to an opinion, and that others are mature enough to listen to it and judge it for what it is.
Certainly nothing as completely immoral and unethical as murder, I can assure you. Only someone so "holy" devoid of any human quality would think of that first, about these programs.

The ultras in Montreal were terrible. They refused to deal with female police, and wouldn't even acknowledge my girlfriend when she asked a man a question once. Plus they paid the YMCA to cover their windows so they wouldn't be tempted to display their lack of bodily control. (you know how they can be when they see a bit of thigh).
Everyday I walked down the street I would have to physically throw dozens of frickin' children's toys out of my way because they just leave the shit all over the place like it's their personal neighbourhood for them only. I got in a confrontation with one guy who told me not to treat other people's property that way, so I let him have it.
This is a sidewalk, not a parking lot. There are other people in this neighbourhood besides you. If you don't like me moving your junk out of my way, show some respect for the community and move your damn self.
After that, I wouldn't acknowledge their presence. Ask me a question, I don't hear, see, or smell you... like nothing happened. Life was easier. I just walked on.
P.S. after the YMCA fiasco about a dozen women in bathing suits went in front of their temple and sun tanned in bikinis all day long, in winter!

Comment #251879 by aquilacane on September 22, 2008 at 9:19 am
This won't work one bit. Wrong audience. The audience you are trying to convince only respond to being told what to do. No one in that video came across as an authority, no one was commanding, no one told anyone exactly what to do. This is good, because that behaviour is below us (outside of the advertising world), it just won't work.
The big problem is that people who are not capable of freethought don't think freely. I hate yelling and telling people what to think, but if you want to start to turn people to freethinking, you need short, two to five word catch phrases that command the behaviour first.
Think before they speak
Perhaps if they pretend to think freely because they think they're meant to, they may actually begin to. Sounds really dirty, but it's true.

Dear authoritarian follower,
I understand Turkey has banned Professor Dawkins website, richarddawkins.net. It is unfortunate your country is not mature enough to hear other peoples opinions, especially when there are proven, scientifically irrefutable facts involved. It must be difficult to have to think for yourselves. I sympathize, only just last week I was asked to pick a number between 1 and 10; I had no idea what to do. If only I had the support of a government like yours to tell me everything I should think. Congratulations on dragging your country back into the stone age. This is true and false. I have long said who cares about Darwin. He was not needed to discover evolutions secrets. There were many others well on their way to revealing this fact. Darwin was just first, and by mistake. He was never going to go on the Beagle in the first place.
Evolution is important, not Darwin. I don't worship idols, especially dead ones.
194. Letter from Sir Richard Roberts asking Reiss to step down
Comment #248410 by aquilacane on September 16, 2008 at 7:11 am
Daivd A Robertson wrote
"Only the most ignorant and fearful fundamentalists, who hold to their dogma on an emotional and "I am right and anyone who disagrees with me must be an idiot' basis, would insist that only their perspective should even be allowed to be mentioned."
The thing about science is that it is not emotional Mr. Robertson, it is quite the opposite. Emotion is the unfortunate catalyst that causes scientifically unsupported opinions like creationism to be thrust into science class where it doesn't belong. Science isn't just about differing opinion, it's about providing the evidence to support that opinion and making it available to the scientific community so that they may throw it at the wall and see if it sticks.
Unfortunately, for creationism, there is nothing to throw at the wall. There is no science. There is nothing to validate or deny. Creationism should not be in science class, not because scientists are fundamentalist religious hating bigots, but because there is nothing of a scientific nature to teach or learn.
How is a child meant to refute or support a scientific hypothesis that has no apparatus in place to help the child formulate a scientific observation?
Opinions without scientific support are fine, but they belong in a class where opining is the rule, not testing. You can't teach creationism with science, there isn't any.
If you are aware of a scientific shred of evidence, or a procedure for which evidence will be realized, I would take your argument to the scientific community for examination. Should it hold water, and it is felt that there is evidence to support creationism, then it must be studdied by the scientific community so that we can better understand what it is we are teaching the children.
But that will never happen, because people who wish to push there selfish agenda without evidence, scientific or otherwise, don't have the moral or ethical ability to play by the rules. Creationism can't follow the rules because there is nothing in it but a desperate pipe dream. Unless real scientific evidence is produced, that's all it will ever be.
Fairy tales don't belong in reality
