"History shows that religious organizations were often the first to offer compassionate care to the vulnerable groups,."

I already dealt with this EXACT quote earlier and attempted to straighten you out. You obviously didn't get the point. When we went back around on this the second time, I truncated the sentence a little to save a little typing. Sorry Nad, but that's not "shooting from the hip", just common practice on boards.
My original point remains the same. Please see my other post, I don't need to repeat myself.

I lived in the Middle East (Lebanon) amongst and I was amazed at how safe and ordered that society was. Post-Christian England was shocking to come home to.

How many of my English friends on this board agree with that statement?

In a formal debate you would get called out on turning from mental health to the inquisition.

BlackGonad, I didn't bring this up. You did.
You said that religious societies are more compassionate societies, and I simply corrected you.
That is how a debate works, formal or not.

And now this gem
Children of religious families are more likely to show positive psychological traits. They are also much less likely to engage in self-destructive behaviors as well as socially destructive behaviors.

Ever heard of a little religious place in world known as the Middle East? There's NEVER any destructive behavior there. (*end sarcasm*)

"Towards the end of the Middle Ages, religious scientists first suggested that biological mechanisms rather than supernatural powers were responsible for mental illness

Therefore even they recognized that 'god' or 'the devil' were not responsible for these problems. This would later lead to the Enlightenment.
Sorry BlackGonad, that's not a "bombshell." It's just a piece of history, and ironically, one that reinforces our points, not yours!

History shows that religious organizations were often the first to offer compassionate care to the vulnerable groups,.

Sure… and they're also the first to kill anyone who doesn't worship the same god.
Ever heard of a little thing call the Inquisition?
How about the burning of 'witches'?
Or the Crusades?
Or perhaps flying planes into buildings???

AtheistAspy -
Good post... a well written little letter to the editor.

As it's been said many times, the theistic arguments are always the same, and we end up saying the same things over and over again, correcting the same BS.
Personally, I feel compelled to correct this misinformation every time I hear it, but damn, it sure gets tiresome! There are just so effing many of them!

Speaks volumes about the state of science education, especially here in the US.

Two chuckes, Al -

was at a friend's cafe and I was laughing out loud. People thought I was a special needs child

I remember you posting something to that effect last night, and I was laughing my ass off… and glad I was home!

…and of course, god's t-shirts!
BTW, do we have to order three shirts - father, son, and holy ghost… or really just one?!

Truly amazing... here we are coming up on 1000 posts in this thread and we've wasted nearly 500 of 'em on KardaShovelShit and Becomestheweirdo.

Guys, offer us some evidence of your god or even a little logical debate on the matter... but this mindless banter is a waste of bandwidth.

Last night, this thread was one of the funniest things I've ever read! Now, it's just flat.
Why are we still entertaining these two???

KardaShovelingShit

Just because science can't explain something (yet) doesn't mean that a god did it!

After all, why is a made up answer better then no answer at all?!?

164. 'Irrational Atheist' trounces God-deniers

Comment #119071 by Double Bass Atheist on January 31, 2008 at 9:49 am

KardaShovelingShit -
Just what does any of your banter have to do with existence of 'god'?

See, skepticism is the default position of a rational mind. The burden is not upon the skeptic to disprove a claim, for the burden is upon the person making said claim. This is not just applied to religion, but all aspects of life.

Until you can offer EVIDENCE of your theistic statements, why should anyone take you seriously?

This guy is clearly a trolling salesman pitching a book.

What does any of this have to do with the existence of god? How about addressing some of Steve Zara's posts?

For anyone interested (I followed some links from WorldNetDaily) and found VD's blog. It's Vox Popoli, and they are encouraging their idiots (like Darknuts and UglyBroad) to come here.

I, too, have been busy and apparently missed all the fun. Damn!
I hope you guys don't mind my interjecting a bit here…

It simply amazes me that believers keep putting out the "more deaths were caused by atheists" argument! And this Ugly Lady does it with an arrogance to match those looks.

I'll direct you to the Encyclopedia of Wars, and the statistical facts, gleaned from centuries of scholarly research and documentation

You have got to be joking, Ugly Lady! Either that, or you've never actually read any of the research you're quoting.
Let's start with millennia human sacrifice to hundreds of ancient gods… to bring rain, have a better harvest, insure victory in battle, etc. These societies routinely sacrificed people (usually children) to their god. Flash forward to the Crusades, the Inquisition, the burning of witches, and other such slaughters in the name of religion. These were called the Dark Ages for a reason!
The problems in the Middle East today are certainly not caused by those countries being too secular!

Lastly, Ugly Lady, if you believe your bible and Great Flood, then your 'god' murdered every living thing on the planet!!! We're talkin' genocide on a planetary scale!

Second law of thermodynamics

When I hear this, my first thought is always, "Oh, not the entropy thing again!"

I never heard of anyone who looked at all the available evidence/data with an "open mind" and concluded, based upon said evidence, that a god must exist!
There is no argument in favor of 'god' that is "logically unassailable". Just try to present one… you'll see what I mean.

So, nordicthunder before you take shots at annabanana (or anyone else on these boards) you really need to present EVIDENCE, not just smart-ass commentary.

I'm certainly glad to see this thread still going strong, with well over 500 posts… unfortunately, we probably wasted 100 of 'em on Omega and his "I don't know if anything exists" bullshit!
If we ignore him, will he go away?

Laurie Fraser- I, too, enjoyed your story very much. Thanks for sharing!

who's an adorable little semi-theist then? yes you is, yes you is! Go on, push the ball to Cartomancer, that's it. Wheeee!

Cartomancer , I almost choked on my lunch when I read that! Hysterical!!!

Well, I betcha Richard Dawkins is really pissed how far off topic we've gotten now.

Diacanu - Funny, but true… based on the gentle chastising he gave some on another recent topic thread, the off-topic banter here blows that away!

Comment #117349 by Double Bass Atheist on January 28, 2008 at 3:46 pm

As always, Paula, your prose is a clear and engaging read.
Actually, we do not really disagree on this… I, too, find this "what is reality?", "you can't prove anything exists" kind of banter very annoying. I still can't understand how we all ended up giving this oddball so much of our attention on this thread.

I just find it so frustrating to see people rejecting mainstream religion, only to rush headlong into the outstretched arms of something even MORE ridiculous, even LESS evidence-based, and even MORE closely related to the contents of your rubbish bin.

Spot on and couldn't agree more!
However, with respect to my original point, I would like to propose a hypothetical question… let's say religion has to exist in some form. Would you rather have a world full of pious fundies or 'omeaga-types'?

Paula, I have slightly unrelated question for you, as well. Today at work, I was showing some coworkers a bit of last nights posts and your flame of that posters "There is no claim to truth" received the most accolades. One friend said that even taken outside of this forum, the points are still well made. He suggested making that a standard letter to send to any Christian whenever this BS comes up. I agree. So, may I quote you and use this writing?
For anyone reading this right now who doesn't know what I'm referring to, you absolutely must read this!

Don't know about anyone else, but these New Age types wind me up even more than your average fundamentalist.

I know where you're coming from on this one, Paula. However, as Cartomancer was saying, "believers" like omeaga369 are harmless… and you said it best in an earlier post that he's basically making this stuff up as he goes along, forming his own religion…. 'Omeganism'.
On the other hand, a fundy and his/her misunderstanding of science, evolution is only a theory, the bible is the inerrant word of god, Hitler was an atheist, etc., definitely strains the limits of one's patience! How many times do we have to hear the same drivel over and over again, correcting the same misinformation? THAT winds me up!

The omega-types are not likely to force the teaching of ID in schools, hijack a plane and fly it into a building, or blow up a bus. Our efforts are better spent on the fundies, for they are the real threat… not some loopy guy's personal perception/definition of 'god'.

Really? It only took a skim for me.

I completely agree, Diacanu. I always thought his arguments were just long-winded nonsense… but sure did produce a lot of that shit!
