2301. The Boundaries of Belief

Comment #205190 by Goldy on July 6, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Isn't lack of belief in the Biblical God a poor way to identify atheists? By that criteria, Muslims are atheists, as are diests who believe an "intelligent agent" initiated the big bang and pantheists who believe God is synonymous with the cosmos. Belief that the Bible is the word of God is an even worse measure of theism

No, Muslims believe in a god (theos), as do, n a way, deists. Lack of belief in the Biblical god makes you a-Biblical God.

It was created and placed with such perfection and precision for life to be possible; you believe that to be the result of chaos?

I would also have to ask....why the other planets? Previous attempts? Failed experiments?

It was created and placed with such perfection and precision for life to be possible; you believe that to be the result of chaos? That's like saying that a from a tornado in a junkyard you would get a fully assembled Boeing 767.

Personal credulity. Life is here because the conditions are right, not the other way around. If you leave a mug of sugarry coffee on your desk, mould will form (trust me, it will. Yech!). If you put your mug in the feezer, it will not. Same coffee, different conditions. OK, I know you'll see my placement of the mug as evidence of God, we'll come to that later.

nacjho117, Why specifically God? I am also asking as he is not mentioned in Indian religious texts, Chinese religious texts or African religions (except those that came about as a result of missionary exposure). God is also absent in Pacific religions, American religions and Australasian religions.
In fact, God as we know him is only found in Levant religions derived from Judaism. Sumeria had no deity called God, neither did the Babylonians. Persian had a model for God called Zoroaster, but this god was not God. Northern Europe does not have God as an indigenous deity.
Why, then, do you assume it is a Judaic god? Solely because of the Bible?

Family here, so time for me to put wee daughter to her bed and lie next to my snoring wife (pregnancy does that, apparently). So good to have them back - and don't 2 year olds change in 3 weeks.
Oh, yeah, I got my PZ28 carbs - Chinese copies of Soviet copies of German carbs, I think they are. Anyway, look suitably old enough to fit to my Ural M66.
Primering a Jeep - soon I'll be doing that to an Alfa Giulia Super :-)
Oh, yeah - kill the cancer (religion) not the patient (the people). Not all Muslims are brain dead - they can be convinced. Those that can't....I'll think of something.

The lack of answers shows this question is along the lines of Steve Zara's asking of David Robertson about his beliefs :-)
And yes, I have an Alfa Giulia Super, a 1973 model. Needs a lot of TLC, but it is a long term project. At the eBay/swapmeet/trawling through the internet finding parts stage.

My impression since migrating to NZ from the UK six years ago is that they appear much more religious here, with new churches popping up right left and centre, with generally strong baptist/Assembly of God/ Pentecostal creationist leanings.

You came over the same time as me :-) I haven't really noticed this - mind you, I got work in Auckland Uni with an English bloke with no belief in God. I haven't seen too many religious people - well, no more than I saw in the UK. Living in Glenfield, I see mainly Korean churches with just one small Samoan church opposite the wine shop (upmarket place - none of that cheap liquor store stuff). I only kow it is Samoan becasue the sign says it is a Samoan congregation of something or other...God and Jesus thingy.
Really, the only religious people I constantly see are Koreans and the odd Hong Kong Catholic. Oh yeah, the secretary in our department converted to Islam to marry her husband (they're both Fijian Indians) - mainly for the in laws as her husband is not the best of Muslims.

My old RE teacher was a bit of a hippy. The Devil was, we were told to consider, the dark side of God.
I don't see why kids have to do a practical on praying and if it is on offer, why they should be made to do it. I can, like others, imagine the uproar if Muslim kids had to attemd mass...well, uproar from one parent...whose kids don't even go to the school in question... Would the media blow it out of all proportion just because Islam is mentioned? Naaaah...

Vaal, not to worry. There are some but they are rather quiet (well, until elections, then we find they do tinker a bit). Most of the religious I know are Pacific Islanders (who get accused of all the crime) and Koreans (who study, apparently). Main religion as far as I can tell is rugby (NZ 16, SA 8 as far as I can tell so far - don't have the Rugby Channel so watching on Prime...not live), fishing and driving really badly. I also believe there is a sub-religion involving two sects, Ford and Holden. Having an Alfa Romeo, I am waaay above both of them ;-)

Two to tango? Are you implying that somehow we in the UK and in the US have done something to deserve and to require our participation in the deadly Muslim jig?

Apparently Israel is our fault - we Brits apparently set it up and the US supports it. Of course the explsion of Jews from Arab lands is glossed over, as is the treatment of Palestinians in the neighbouring Arab lands. Then there's the media's treatment of Islam. How did Brian help me call it....spiral of reinforcement. Look at the links I have provided - it does seem like there is a backlash against Islam which is making them all the more defensive and at the same time assertive. Muslims don't feel comfortable in the west anymore which is why they want the comforts of home. Heck, look at the headline above, the title of this thread.
We need to treat the religion, excise that. Somehow we need to make sure that the people are treated differently. Sort of like trying to cure cancer, I guess - you want to kill the cancer without killing the person. I just sometimes feel that some think killing the religion must somehow involve punishing the person....which I am a bit uncomfortable with.

Philip, deep breaths. Just remember, they only have a book to justify their claims. The scientists working to prove their hypotheses might be able to reconcile their findings to their book but they can't make it stick. The fundamentals are all wrong, you see - that's why they have to say God fiddled with the stuff to hide his trace :-) Of course, he fiddled badly - after all, if the world is only a few thousand years old, why would he make it appear to be several billion years old? Hell of a whoopsy, if you ask me.

Nah, you're right. I find that religious education somehow reinforces secularism. Most people only do it for the qaulity of the education. I want to a strong CoE school and I am an atheist, as are all my mates from there. I don't know why education appears to be better at a church funded school but I cannot see an increased religiosity from attending one - any more than I can can see homosexuality decreasing with heterosexual parents.

Goldy, I am sorry, but that is nonsense. I go into Slough High street, and hear Muslim apologists spout the vilest and most hateful filth you have ever heard in your life, almost identical to the reporting from the dispatches "Undercover mosque".

Aaaah, Slough! We used to live in Gerrards X and then I lived in Reading. Old man had a Citroen Light 15 (actually an Onze Legere as it was French, not Slough built) in a lock up in Slough - I got caught behind some Muslim gathering, all placards and stuff and had to follow them down the road to my lock-up (typically, they had to go my way!). Took and hour to do a few hundred yards...
I know what you mean - I have friends who want to leave the UK because of the Islamisation they perceive is happening back home. They feel the same way as you, I think.
I just find it amusing because the backlash is occurring - have you read the comments? Patience is running out - they ask for so much, get granted so much (by the Archbish and the highest judge in the land) yet complain how oppressed they are. Things are getting stretched thin, seems to me.
It is counter productive - your law abiding Muslims are pissed off at those that ask for the caliphate in the UK but then they are not singled out for good treatment - all Muslims are targetted, whether they are believers or not. This has a knock on effect because most Muslims are Pakistani and therefore stand out a bit. Hindus hate them because they are tarred by the same brush.
HAtred against Muslims is closing their ranks, I think. They are laagering themselves, living in ghettoes with the perceived safety in numbers where they are easy targets for those that want to cause separation.
This article helps that, as do the other articles.
Muslims are obviously not the Jews of now - except for those that just want to live normally but follow the religion of their fathers. Law abiding, have a drink in the pub, maybe not eat pork but not make a fuss if someone eats a bacon butty next to them sort of Muslim. Muslims with kids that don't go to mosques or even pray. These guys are the "Jews" - they don't care for that shit but because they are Pakistani, because they are Indian looking, they are targetted. Hell, even an atheist called Iqbal Hussein is targetted - no one asks him what his views are, they just see his name and label him.
Unlike NZ, I do get very worried when friends and family travel in London, as there is a real threat of mass murder by Islamist fascists

20 years ago, we felt the same about Irish nationalists. And NZ is not that safe. What about that Bauer girl? Or the Sikh liquor shop owner gunned down, followed by the 80 year old Chinese woman battered to death in her own home, or the Chinese mother run over as she fought to get her handbag back. Indeed, as the liquor dhop owner lay bleeding to death, bystanders took the opportunity of helping themselves to booze.
We worry overmuch, we are easily led by the media who sensationalise shit and are easily led by those that want to sow suspicion.
I know I can't condemn because I am also caught up in all this shit. I feel guilty and bad, but I can't help it. I can almost see myslef in Germany in the late 30's, hating the Jews because of what I hear. I don't want to feel this way, but they are winning, depsite my best attempts to not let those that want to cause trouble win. It scares me that I am so easily led and that shows in my comments sometimes.
