Yes, thank you epeeist. I've watched/read what seems like hundreds of these debates/conversation and I've never felt like any creationist/IDer has won out. I was curious to see what seeker considers a win by creationists, but instead he's given me work to do. I'll try and figure out his method of arriving at that conclusion is, but I don't think it will be productive. Then, I might be biased :)

I would truly like to read these logs. Can you point me in the right direction?

Sharon,

In Utah County (south of Salt Lake City, think B.Y.U.) the isolation takes place right out in front of everyone. The mind boggles at what goes on in Colorado City and Texas. It IS sickening.

Nice take down! I especially find this hard to dispute.

Of the 53 girls between the ages of 14 and 17 who are in state custody, 31 either have given birth or are expecting, officials have stated
You can't convice me that the mothers of the 22 girls who weren't pregnant didn't know what was going on...in the temple no less.

Colwyn & Sharon,

My problem with her defence is it appears to me she is projecting her motivations, morals and ethics on to the FLDS women. The facts are; these women are culpible for turning their heads from the evil done by their neighbors (assuming they aren't involved themselves).

Their prophet is 'doing time' for encouraging rape. [edit] and it's starting to look like they had 'deflowering beds' in the temple. You can't tell me the average member didn't know[/edit]

I don't know a Muslim who hits his wife. Not one. That includes many Saudis, Kuwaitis, Emirates, and others... In their home countries.
Al, We are all lead to believe (in the West) that it is routine that men don't allow freedoms to their wives, daughters and sisters. You say none of the Muslim men you know hit their wives; do they limit them in other ways?

I'm not trying to provoke, just asking because you seem to have a great deal of personal first hand knowledge and I'm wondering how much we read (Ayaan Ali for example) is exaggerated (in your opinion).

Steve,

Prejudices pass with time, hopefully
That's unbelievably magnanimous of you! I've never understood this whole orientation discomfort stuff. I mean, isn't it pleasant to see people in happy relationships? Sure, all couples can take public affection too far at times (especially when alcohol is involved), but overall…

Anyway, I could learn to be more understanding from your example. Orientation-phobias piss me off.

Have you read Austin Dacey's 'The Secular Conscience'? I found myself nodding at his arguements for keeping religious belief in the public dialog just because of the reason you mention above.

His other reasons were great as well :)

Dr. Benway,

I guess we can't quote the bible and hold believers to their belief because we don't believe and haven't studied the belief properly...I believe that's correct.

Now that's all clear...

My children read what they like and have many books available in my home including the Bible, Koran, Book of Mormon, the Kalevala, the Iliad, the Odessey, and many other works of myth.

How 'bout you? Be honest.

Thanks D, that made my day! Don't apologize for your rants, it's part of what makes reading this site fun...oh, and I agree with it, to a point.

I've known some fairly powerful government officials and administrators (one of them in the biblical sense). You'd be surprised at how incompetent (sometimes corrupt) most elected officials really are. They seldom listen to the professional bureaucrats who are trained and educated to run government and instead seem to think they have 'divine' insight into what 'the people want'.

Stupidity and greed are usually what makes them screw up.

keith pointed out,

you want the intellectual respectability and benefits of some scientific beliefs while also clinging to the comforts of a God that watches over you.
I've encountered this belief system many times. Chewmanfoo is not as original as he thinks. I could walk him through my neighborhood knocking on doors and I guarantee it would take less than 3 knocks to find someone with the opinion that science and technology are advancing as a direct result of inspiration from God.

I get fuzzy all over just thinking about it.
