I have a work neighbor who is like this lady. She can't admit her animosity about Obama is because he's black. She spews out a bunch of right wing radio talking points. She considers herself a good christian.

As a middle classs (for the midwest) person I know this much. Most of any extra cash I get goes right back out to Home Depot, Menards, Lowes, etc. I've still got to rewire, put in drywall to replace the lathe and plaster and then retrofoam. I'm sure when I take out the lathe and plaster I'm going to find, at best, old newspaper for insulation or nothing at all.

Also, I think about the skit from SNL in the mid 90's. "Everybody else has stuff. I want stuff. I want stuff too..."

I think it's funny that a described moderate and centrist (Powell) gets called a RINO (Republican in name only) by some lady in NC who refused to shake Obama's hand. The electorate seems to be able to compartmentalize and have amnesia (much like myself after that truck pulled in front of me and my motorcycle...) with regards to events that are more than a few months old.

My Rottweiler Mo ate

1. a recliner

2. a wood consel television

3. the bathroom door trim

4. a few various tables

and various other miscellaneous items.

Then he stopped. Right before I was going to send him to dog heaven. Great dog. Unfortunately I left him in my mothers care while he was a puppy for a couple of weeks while I went out of state to work. When I got back my mother had a new dog. I had visitation rights.

H4D,

I'm on the East side of Lansing (West of Michigan State University) I was born in Texas but we (half of my father's side of the family) came here to work in the GM plants and go to MSU. Mom is from Pirmasens, Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany.

Al-puppies need to go out every 2 to 4 hours or so until they grow a little and get a bit of muscle control. My best friend's family just got a little female pit puppy. I like pit bulls as long as they are raised responsibly. But then again I like chihuahua's to a degree because they think they are pit bulls. :)

We've been watching the games at the grad/family student housing at MSU...Spartan Village. The brothers from California got a rather large lcd hd tv this fall. The on campus cable system has fox cbs nbc abc in hd as well as ESPN. We are a little agitate when games we like are on ESPN2 as it's not in hd on this system. ;) We've been grilling for the games. Bratwurst simmered in beer then grilled. Chicken. Fajitas. Once in a while a couple of local markets have sales where they sell a whole ribeye for under $4 a pound sliced free. On those occasions it's steak. Plus the new ziploc freezer bags that let you pump the air out work really well. I'm stocked up. I have found that I can ambidextrously flip tortillas on the two front burners of a stovetop. Two weeks ago I made a pot of Fireworks Chili. Baked Mac and cheese. The games are really an excuse to get together, cook, and eat.

The little fiend jumped on my leg as I was stepping over the edge of the tub getting out of the shower this morning. Luckily he didn't get too much air and latch his claws into anything besides my right calf. I haven't gotten to youtube in the last few days but perhaps this weekend. Althought MSU-OSU will consume 3 hours of my free time this weekend...

All in all though he's at least doubled in size. I let him run around the toms a bit and since there is no female around they tolerate him.

I would recommend Uncle John's cider. An unpasteurized blend bringing together tart and sweet. Refreshing and delicious. Well worth the trip North of St. Johns Michigan... The cider mill's pies, especially apple, are very good as well.

It is rumoured that 3 out of the 4 major party candidates for President and Vice-President gave out high fives after sampled the goods. The other wanted to suspend his campaign until the pastry crisis had been dealt with.

My summer...

Got $600 back (incentive money) bought pavers, sand and paver base. Built 12' x 14' patio. Bought extra tank of propane in anticipation of some extra grillin'

Cracked a piggy bank. Got the remaining 8 old drafty windows in my house replaced. $2600. Bought 4 tires for my car as a have a long commute every day. $500 Bought a replacement Price Pfiester bath faucet because I couldn't find a replacement shower diverter for the antiquated crap that is currently in my large bathroom. $80. (He) washing machine (to replace the one that unexpectedly went kaput) $800.

So, to as an illustration to Al's point, every extra cent I managed to accrue this spring and summer went back out. The Candiens that built the GE washer are happy. The folks at Menard's are happy about the building supplies. The folks at Guardian Window (in Toledo) who built the windows are happy and Dave (the guy from West Michigan Glass Block who installed the windows) is happy. Home Depot is happy as well about the washer and faucet purchases...

I'm not too happy except the stuff works well and hopefully I'll get an energy credit for the washer and windows. Now I need to save every penny for a strike fund as my contract is up in April. Yahoo!

If there is no strike then that piggy bank will buy something. Flooring, Tub surround, 12 gauge 20 amp wire, drywall... ugh.

The funny thing about the (battery) acid trip was that we were right outside a service station with a pretty large utility sink. It was quite a religious event having my head repeatedly dunked in a sinkful of cold water (luckily I was wearing glasses) and from all the little pinholes that appeared in my vietnam vintage field jacket from the battery acid. At least I thought it was funny in hindsight since I emerged relatively unscathed. The sight of the hydrogen inside the casing starting to combust was quite fascinating. Kind of an "oh shit!"
moment.

One of the questions I have, regarding sample, may be answered if I get my hands on a copy of Brownmiller's book and it's bibliography. Using terms like "all too common", "often described" etc are what concern me. Is the source drawn from congressional hearings where folks who have been summoned for testimony on the basis of there being a report of rape? Or is it a blind sample with controls? I wonder about that. I don't wonder whether or not crimes of this sort happened.

I think Epeeist was talking about the percentage of rapists who know their victims (70%) which would be less likely in a combat zone. Other factors (group pressure etc...) that would increase incidece are/were present as well. I don't belive Epeeist was dismissing them merely wondering about the affect military theater vs civilian life variables would have.

My first timed out post!

Here goes (again somewhat)

Thanks for the links. I managed to read the first link. I have some questions about sample sizes and such but found it enlightening. I would have liked to see more primary source sampling (before it's too late Dad is 67...) to see what the incidence of this criminal behavior is vs the number of troops deployed. My only primary source stated he would have dealt with Sgt Meserve (and the rest of that squad) by using the business end of his M-16. He was quite vehement about this. He got quite agitated and was very irate by the end of Casualties of War.

anyways,

My .02 about the vietnam thing. My pops was there from 65 to 66 with the 1st Cavalry. He has some pretty gruesome stories but none of them involving Vietnamese women. Now, when Casualties of War, the film with Michael J Fox in it as a soldier who witnessed the rape of a Vietnamese girl, came out on cable, we watched it together. Watching films set in Vietnam with my father is always "interesting". The major thing I remember about it is that my father called Michael J Fox's character a pussy. He said the character should have shot his squad and he said he would have. (Pops was a staff sargeant at that time). Now I don't the year that movie was set. And my father came from Ft Benning and was airborne and had ranger training and so could have been considered an "elite" soldier with command training. But I am a bit sceptical about the rapes. Not that some of these horrendous crimes occurred but the levels reported. Does anyone have any statistics from credible sources or is this something along the lines of "I know a guy who knew a guy..."? A serious question as I have only my own anectdotal evidence (my father) to go by.
