2651. Lying for Jesus?

riandouglas-

Perhaps we can ask Kardashel for his opinion on this

Just don't mention wormholes.

I'm currently working out an explanation as to why I'm nearly 10 years older than you.

The current Quetzology on this subject is that I am a divine being and have chosen to manifest myself upon Earth in the form of a mortal avatar, currently aged 24.

Steve-

If I understand you right, does this mean that we keep them talking about religion? But isn't our territory science and reason (well, for many of us)?

Perhaps the focus should be on the areas where their religious beliefs "inform" their opinions on science and reason, and the claims that they make as a consequence.

But we still should talk about religion, taking the fight to them, so to speak.

Have we learnt anything over the past few days about handling a variety of theists, from thisisme and seeker_of_truth to the likes of Remnant and TheTruthID?

Personally, I think that this thread has been quite useful. Witness how quickly Remnant and TheTruthID degenerated into insults and downright evasion when pressed on the questions that had been put to them.

This is the way to go with creationists, I think. If they come to talk, excellent. If they come to throw Scripture, ignore. But those that have come to talk shouldn't be allowed to side-step questions that they don't like. By the same token we shouldn't allow ourselves to get side-tracked by deliberately controversial statements they might introduce to try and shift the focus. Where they try this, we need to keep pressing them on the original question.

Tulum-

Side issue PS Quetzacoatl - South American mythology rules. My wife and I did a trip around (slightly different-I know) the Mayan sites of Chichen,Tulum, Uxmal and the Puuc route.

It absolutely rules. I want to visit Machu Picchu one day, as well as some Aztec sites.

If the same species is found preserved on different continents and in the same strata, then there either has to be one flood which was world-wide or multiple floods which occurred quite distant from each other.

You forgot option 3- that the continents were joined then subsequently separated as a consequence of continental drift.

Roughly when was the Global Flood? How many centuries BC?

2686. Lying for Jesus?

Comment #168758 by Quetzalcoatl on April 25, 2008 at 10:35 am

Remnant-

Check the numbers, studies have shown that religious people give far more to charity than secular people. I have been on many a mission trips and worked in many food lines helping the less fortunate and have yet to run into an atheist group

Firstly, as Anna said so well, when atheists give to charity or do good works, they do not do so in the name of atheism. Nor do they feel the need to brag about it.

Secondly, I cannot help but wonder if there would be a significant divide if religious people were given the choice about donating to charity, rather than it being an instruction from Jesus.

Off topic-

Duffman has been transformed! Oh no!

2687. Open Letter to a victim of Ben Stein's lying propaganda

Comment #168750 by Quetzalcoatl on April 25, 2008 at 10:31 am

Seeker_of_truth-

There are limits to ID's representation of original design flexibility. Even if the human race were universally blind at this point in history, it might not represent the original state at the point of design. Say an unstoppable plague took away our eyesight tomorrow; does this make our eyes of poor design today?

So is it your assertion that human eyes did not initially have saccades, but rather that this is something that has happened over time?

Another question is that if humans were Intelligently Designed, then why would they have bodies that are vulnerable to such changes? Surely the designer should have accounted for that?

Comment #168581 by Quetzalcoatl on April 25, 2008 at 8:10 am

seeker_of_truth-

it's interesting that the subject of the eye has come up. Did you know that your eyes do not actually remain still, but "jiggle" very slightly from side to side. These are called "saccades", and they can sometimes have strange effects on our perception. Here is an excellent example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccadic_suppression_of_image_displacement

The brain has to edit saccades out of our perception, so that we're not even aware that they are happening:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccadic_masking

Point being, why would an Intelligent Designer create eyes with this problem?

The truth you subscribe to originates with the father of all lies, the god of this world

Are you referring to Satan here? You are, aren't you! My favourite story involving Satan is the one where Merciful God makes a bet with Satan, and tells him to go and make a man's life utterly miserable for no real reason. Ah, good times.

Do you work in an indoctrination center by any chance?

speaking of songs and lyrics, perhaps this extract from a song by the LostProphets might be appropriate here:

Cause every day we're getting older
And every day we all get colder
We're sick of waiting for our answers

Wake up, Wake up, Wake up,
Yeah so tired of waiting, waiting for us to
Wake up, Wake up, Wake up,
Yeah so sick of waiting, for us to make a move

Are we meant to take the pain
Should we sit around and wait
Are we being saved
Or was I another lie you made to make us hate

Cause every day we're getting older
And every day we all get colder
We're sick of waiting for our answers
