Can someone please tell me what a 'very number' is as opposed to say, just a number. Always wanted to know that.

Dr B: Is that part of why humans appear so sluggish compared to animals do you think? We process our 'experiencing' through memory and language before reacting. Animals just 'see' the detail and react BAM, cutting out the middleman so to speak.

.....Words can be a museum of ignorance. They can be used to describe, but often do not have the quality of instigating perception.

And perhaps absent entirely during direct perception. Which implies that language, words are a construct of memory, to talk about things when they are over. Or is that just when you light a ciggy? :-)

Well, it's a very difficult and emotive issue with, at the end of the day, no hard and fast answer (unless yer Catholic of course). One thing research also shows clearly is that whatever legislation is enacted banning it, abortions happen anyway at much the same level with frequent disastrous outcomes.

What I hate is the arrogance that says to a woman, you will do what I want in this circumstance, not what you want. Who the fuck am I to say such a thing?

Yes, the law does this all the time, for sometimes good and sometimes bad reasons. The point is that the law is (rightly) not beholden to any particular belief system or their moral codes.

The latest BMA research clearly shows that if you are serious about wanting to reduce the incidence of abortion you do so through education and widely available contraception.

MEMO TO Self: Always read the small print.

"The Flat Earth Society is not in any way responsible for the failure of the French to repel the Germans at the Maginot Line during WWII. Nor is the Flat Earth Society responsible for the recent yeti sightings outside the Vatican, or for the unfortunate enslavement of the Nabisco Inc. factory employees by a rogue hamster insurrectionist group. Furthermore, we are not responsible for the loss of one or more of the following, which may possibly occur as the result of exposing one's self to the dogmatic and dangerously subversive statements made within: life, limb, vision, Francois Mitterand, hearing, taste, smell, touch, thumb, Aunt Mildred, citizenship, spleen, bedrock, cloves, I Love Lucy reruns, toaster, pine derby racer, toy duck, antelope, horseradish, prosthetic ankle, double-cheeseburger, tin foil, limestone, watermelon-scented air freshner, sanity, paprika, German to Pig Latin dictionary, dish towel, pet Chihuahua, pogo stick, Golf Digest subscription, floor tile, upper torso or halibut."

Quite. It seems that we cannot approach anything like agreement on what 'evidence' is. It is too good a hiding place it seems. There is nowhere to go from there but that does not necessarily mean the dialogue must stop - clearly not.

Apropos of nothing (much): According to the 2001 UK census returns 390,000 (0.7%) people identified their religion as Jedi. Jedi was allocated its own code for the census! This makes it the fourth largest religion in the UK after Christianity (71.6%), Islam (2.7%) and Hinduism (1.0%).

The Jedi highlight patience, self-control, harmony, knowledge and preservation of life, while discouraging anger, hatred, fear and aggression.

The Jedi Code:
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.

...yeah well, 390,000 Jedi - therefore the Force exists neh?

But I stand by the rest of my points in the previous two posts.

....and this one is a classic

If we want to help people kick their religious habit,--sometimes for good reasons, though not always,--we have to understand their emotional and material needs and offer an alternative. Telling people they are deluded that their feelings are only biochemistry wouldn't get you very far.

Clodhopper - bile, lies innuendo and hatred. I guess if you can't cope with the argument you resort to name calling. You can do better than that.

Sorry, I didn't realise they were names.

4438. Comment #141721 by clearthinker
3464 Clod hoper - in answer to your question I would use the following from wikipedia --
Evidence in its broadest sense, refers to anything that is used to determine or demonstrate the truth of an assertion. Philosophically, evidence can include propositions which are presumed to be true used in support of other propositions that are presumed to be falsifiable. ...

Yes, but I didn't ask you for a dictionary definition. I asked what the word MEANT to YOU (in this context of discussing the existence or otherwise of ~God). Is the dictionary definition sufficient then?

As it happens one of my best friends is the grandson of the last person to be evacuated from St Kilda and has taken a keen interest in the history of the place. Suffice it to say that the simplistic unsophisticated history of SG and others (which amounts to 'blame it on the Calvinists) is all too typical of the those who would rather perpetuate myth than deal with historical fact. The truth is far more complex.

I think we should just agree that St Kilda is a fascinating (and complex) study on many levels and leave it at that. Neither SG or myself simplistically blame the Calvinists for Hirta's demise which was very sad. It WAS much more complicated than that. Another time, another place for that discussion.
