WOW. I just read the original article http://arts.guardian.co.uk/theatre/comedy/story/0,,2029053,00.html and I have to say this "Jeevan Vasagar" writes an article that stinks of agenda. He/She (I can't tell by the name) tries to paint Richard as a mean spirited atheist and Peter Kay as wholesome man of the people (which he is). Even down to the photos selected. Peter Kay is smiling and happy and Richard looks stern and serious.
I have lost respect for the guardian and Jeevan Vasagar (whom I never knew before. I wouldn't want to).
This kind if journalism is dishonest, disappointing and all to common. I expected more from the guardian to be honest.
Comment #25101 by Zaphod on March 10, 2007 at 5:45 am
Peter Kay is a funny guy. I have laughed a lot whenever he is on TV. That said just because he finds belief in a god comforting doesn't make it true. I would find it a comforting thought to have Scarlett Johansson as my lover, doesn't mean it will happen.
255. Response to Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris
Comment #24986 by Zaphod on March 9, 2007 at 3:18 pm
1. After 1 minute it is obvious he hasn't read "The God Delusion", "The End of Faith" or "Letter to a Christian Nation".
2. Dawkins doesn't put Science against religion and compare them. He says Dawkins puts the mohammed ali version of science against a 90 pound weakling of religion. Dawkins doesn't do this.
In my opinion for finding truth religion is a 90 pound weakling compared to science.
3. Science is a methodical, logical and rational process for find truth about the natural world. Science is not a belief system. If you think it is, you don't know what science is.
4. Zaytuna says "humans aren't acting like humans". I beg to differ. Since the beginning of recorded history the one thing we seem to be able to do with record efficiency is kill each other. I do not like this but it does seem to be human nature.
5. He says the wars of the 20th century where over ideologies. Religion is the worst Ideology. Stalinist Russia, Nazi Germany etc. all had dogmatic belief systems. Religion is the ultimate dogmatic belief system
6. Zaytuna says "god expects more for us". What religion is he referring to? In the bible god tells humans to kill in his name. He even kills humans himself. Oh yea and anyone who doesn't agree gets to burn forever in a lake of fire. The Qu'ran is just as bad if not worse.
God made man in his image? I think not. Perhaps man made god in his image.

Comment #21880 by Zaphod on February 11, 2007 at 11:21 am
I feel pretty much the same way as PZ does. I am glad those participating in evolution Sunday aren't on the other side of the fence (creationist douchebag side) and are in support of evolution. Unlike Kenneth Miller (someone who I actually like) I think there is a barrier between science and religion because they need to completely different ways of thinking and not ways that can really co-exist. At least not to me. Some people can make them co-exist but I feel at some level they are being dishonest to themselves. Not in a devious underhanded way but still lying to themselves.
265. The God Delusion
Comment #21737 by Zaphod on February 10, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Orr writes "the Ultimate 747 argument was shredded by reviewers".
Wasn't this just an argument that stated that god was the ultimate 747. That the religious people who think evolution was chance are creating an even more improbable thing - GOD.
The fact is evolution isn't chance as Dawkins has to explain to every religious person. If evolution was chance as the original 747 argument claims then god would be an even more improbable happenstance. How is this difficult to understand?
I guess I can't see Orr's point as I only see the subject of theology along the same lines as I see the subject of mythology.

I have read all the essays back and forth and I have to say that Sam Harris wins everytime. In the latest exchange Mr Sullivan has basically admitted that no amount of proof could ever convince him of the non-existence of god. If atheists are right and when Mr Sullivan dies he simply dies and looses his conciousness, no thoughts or feelings. He will never know that he was wrong. Perhaps he choose to believe because its not really a choice. He believes in an afterlife so it makes him feel better. If he is wrong he won't know because he will no longer exist.

The priest says something along the lines of "you can't and shouldn't try to prove/disprove faith".
How convenient, so irrational beliefs without evidence shouldn't and couldn't be proven or disproven.
Nice little protective bubble her argument creates around her faith.
Yet again the hope argument. If it gives hope to some this is irrelevant in a discussion on if it is true or false.

Reading this I am biased in favour of Sam Harris. Heavily biased I must say. His views and opinions are very similar to my own on religion. I must say that Mr Sullivan seems to be one of the more intelligent religious people but I was disapointed when he used the word "intolerant". That seems to be what all religious people call atheists when usually atheists are the most tolerant and religious people least so.

$1,000,000 is yours if you prove your psychic ability. All you have to do is prove what you claim. Give an independant panel to judge Rosemary Altea giving a reading to a complete stranger who she has never met, seen, spoke to or has any knowledge of.
If she actually has an ability it will be shown. I bet if she ever did agree to it she would come up with some excuse if it didn't work. Fatigue or something.

281. Blasphemy Challenge on FOX
Comment #19714 by Zaphod on January 29, 2007 at 12:23 pm
That interviewer was a contemptible tool. He just doesn't get the point of the blasphemy challenge. He just gives the typical religious response. See below.
1. Why do you want to take away their hope?
2. Religious people do good things?
3. Why are you so angry?
My Answers
1. Religion may give hope to some but it also segregates, indoctrinates and isolates alot of people.
2. SHUT UP. PEOPLE DO GOOD THINGS. NOT JUST RELIGIOUS PEOPLE OR JUST ATHEISTS BUT ANY TYPE OF PERSON CAN DO SOMETHING GOOD.
3. If any atheist is angry it maybe because when they where young they feel they where lied to about important stuff and told idiotic myths about sky daddies(god) and wizards(jesus).
All 3 points are irrelevant of religions truth. If it gives hope, does good or makes you angry it doesn't alter what is true.
Religious myths are obviously false to people if they think rationally unshackled by their faith.
If god is real or not we can't prove and may never be able to. If god does exist and is petty enough to care about people worshiping him then I deny him/her/it even more.
I deny the holy spirit, god, jesus, allah, vishnu, zeus, tom cruise and superman.
Long live the silver surfer. Galactus is comming.

ID assumes a creator. In sceince you make a hypothesis based on the evidence, observations etc. You then test it and/or find more evidence. How can a creator be tested? It can't. All ID is saying is that the complex nature of things is beyond human understanding and that it was god who did.
It is cowardly and insufficient. All IDiots are incredibly arrrogant to think that just because they can't understand how something may have came about doesn't someone else can't or won't.

The douchebag in that video says the canons of proof aren't applicable to god.
This is true. You can't disprove or prove 100% eithier way. The funny thing is that its like he actually holds this up as evidence of it. If you can't disprove something this doesn't mean that its likely to be true. I can disprove tons of stupid stuff that I know isn't true just by using common sense.

294. Without God, Gall Is Permitted
Comment #16737 by Zaphod on January 8, 2007 at 11:12 am
If someone has no religion and just believes that a god/higher power or whatever exists then I can only make a probability type arguement to them. I can say that just because something can't be disproved doesn't mean it is at all likely.
Someone who has a religion that they conform to is totally different to me. I have said this on many occasions "JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS WRITTEN IN A BOOK DOESN'T MAKE IT THE TRUTH". Just because the bible or the Quran or whatever has words in it that say stuff about god and that the book is the word of god DOESN'T MAKE IT SO. I can write stuff down in a book but it doesn't mean what I write is the truth. WHY CAN'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS.
The truth in not negotiable. Something is true or it isn't. If everyone in the world believed in the bible 100% this would still not make it the truth. Its not true just because people believe it to be true.
