This is a classic example of today's School of Philosophy who sold the pass on freedom of thought when they brought their minds into bondage to what is termed the 'scientific method'.How ironic, someone who believes after death she will be judged on thought crimes is lamenting a perceived lack of freedom of thought.

Comment #224951 by Apathy personified on August 6, 2008 at 3:51 am
I'm going to guess that the bulk of these reviews were written before the 'journalists' had watched the show - they just left a few blanks to fill in to cover their tracks.
It amazes me that someone who intelligently tries to explain a scientific fact to people is accused of being evangelical and preaching to people.
I particularly liked the end of the mirror review though
The first being the danger of believing you have all the answers about anything.
Secondly for not realising that creation and evolution aren't mutually exclusive. That isn't the argument in the series - the argument is the change bit.
It's possible for a thing to be created and then change over time.

I've just read the 3 reviews that have been posted on this thread.
I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark here - The job of TV critic for any newspaper goes to the least educated and most underqualified of all journalists.
I'd also make the point that the reviewers were probably of the opinion that the most important fact of the show was that they were watching it.
My prediction is that by the end of the series, all the TV reviews will be describing RD as 'pushing elitist and intellectual ideas on people who are happy not knowing'
It was an excellent show, can't wait for the next one.

Teratornis,
I make it a point of principle to stop a debate if someone resorts to Reductio ad Hitlerum (Godwins Law) in an effort to prove their point (which you failed with - no one chose to be a victim of Hitler, but you choose to have a drink), so this will be my last post on this particular debate, feel free to have the last word. Honestly though, i had higher expectations of you.
I DO feel uncomfortable that so many Americans (100,000 was the figure repeatedly used) and people of other nationalities die as a result of alcohol abuse, it's a waste and is VERY tragic to those nearby (i have personal experience of this).
However, what you fail to recognise is that it is ultimately a personal decision, no one is forced to drink.
The alcohol industry is in no way perfect and i'm not defending a lot of what they do - but they can not take full responsibility for the actions of a few. Alcoholism is really a suicide, not a murder, as you like to call it.
To be honest, i think you and i have non-commutable views of reality.

Fanusi,
You do realise that there can be no proof (by current technology, at any rate) when judging a 'thought crime'?
Hypothetically, if you brought in the law that any BRITISH citizen could be deported (you need the other countries permission, btw) for supporting the idea of shariah law - do you not think that they would lie and deny they support it?
You would then not only give them the support of the moderates and even sympathetic non-believers, but you would drive their believe underground to ferment and it would then become so much more potent and dangerous.
If these people (the mischief makers in islam) are casting themselves in the role of oppessed minority - why hand them the PR victory and play along?
I have to add that the day britain starts deporting its own citizens for thought crimes would be the day it becomes a country not worth defending.

Whatever the motivation - it's premeditated murder.
I'm not familiar with 'hate crime' laws - but is it wise for a legal system to recognise the differences between people - to make distinctions between people based on race, religion, sexuality, etc. - when judging a crime?

From a purely tactical point of view - demonisation of a group of people (i'm only discussing the ones with an agenda of mischief here) who cast themselves in the role of the oppressed victim is quite poor - gives them more support than they would/should have.

Is it acceptable to draw a (loose) parallel between the young muslim men, born in this country, who get drawn into a much more radicalised islam than their parents AND the young afro-carribean men who get drawn into a gang culture?
A search for a unique cultural identity (as they are never told they are british - but 'british muslim' or 'black british' - i'm never called 'white british', so why are they given an extra identity tag?), feeling of victimisation, from poorer areas (maybe that part doesn't quite work with the uni students though), etc.
