302. Why do we believe in God? 2m study prays for answer

Comment #129481 by steveroot on February 19, 2008 at 7:39 am

Richard, I (like my fellow Steve in the first post) also interpreted this:

Justin Barrett, a psychologist who has been quoted in support of arguments by both the atheist Richard Dawkins and his critic, Alister Mc-Grath, a Christian theologian, said...

to mean
... has been quoted in support of arguments by the atheist Richard Dawkins and arguments by his critic, Alister Mc-Grath...

Well, if we two Steves are confused, at least we have our champion Steve Z holding up the honor of our name! ;-)

Not that I think it matters much whose arguments he supports, as the study surely will receive critical review that would identify any bias on the part of the authors.

It's hard to cut out the oil totally, but reducing consumption is a good first step. There are other good reasons to use less fossil fuel, some of which arguably are more important than keeping our money out of the middle east.

I ride a folding bicycle to work (yes, even in the winter) and keep car travel to a minimum. That's a start.

So leaving them alone is not the answer Steve, talking to them is.

I am afraid not, not in this case. This is not a matter of people who want to condemn me to hell. This is not a matter of people who want to avoid me. The BNP has a history of violence. David supports them.

I wasn't saying you had to talk to him. But if you leave the thread, then nobody hears your input and all we have is his side.

My recommendation: ignore him, as will I. There is nothing he could post here that would elicit the slightest sympathy from anyone. Speaking for myself, I would lose *no* respect for you sticking around (or if you follow your original plan).

Let's review who has a death penalty and brutal prisons.

China, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, among a few other nasty countries.

Some would include the USA here...

Hanging and firing squad... one is grotesque, the other messy, but death is death and pretty quick. Electrocution and gas chamber are another story.

As for whether prisons should be hell-holes, it depends on what you believe deters people from committing crimes: the loss of their personal liberty or the possibility they may wind up as someone's bitch. I think it's been said that the crimes of passion or mental illness that frequently elicit consideration of execution are not much deterred by fear of the penalty. People who commit crimes of less violent nature may in fact become rehabilitated while confined (look at Martha Stewart :-) ). Some have obtained college or other degrees and occasionally contributed to society even if they never are released.

Yet... one doesn't want the prison experience to be a country club simulation either.

183. Comment #126791 by al-rawandi on February 14, 2008 at 8:29 am

I was against the death penalty, for the most part. My father is a psychologist and worked in Manard State Prison in IL. He basically put it to me thus: "Some people just need to die. They are psycopaths, sociopaths or whatever. They will never be rehabilitated, and will certainly offend again. There are people who are fundamentally evil."

So the problem remains, how do you weed out specific whackjobs and execute them as opposed to the innocent, or the poorly represented (often poor people).

This is exactly how I feel. There are some crimes that are so heinous that rehabilitation will never be possible. Summary execution would be less cruel in these cases, but then there is that problem of *certainty* of guilt. Steve Zara (#188) points this out, as others have. So, when I really think it through, I find I would rather *not* have the death penalty. Of course, this in no way diminishes the responsibility of the "system" to dispense justice accurately.

Freedom of speech occasionally *does* involve offending someone. When your offended (presumptive) entity is (supposedly) omnipotent and omniscient, why should humans have to inflict the retribution? Shut up and let your deity take care of his/her own problems. You might find that there would be fewer "insults" if you didn't get your panties in such a publig twist.

In a Dutch novel about a veterinarian in the catholic south of the country (Doctor Vlimmen) one of the characters states that the miracles of Lourdes always have a possible explanation, some of them not at our grasp yet. What never, absolutely never happens is a miracle that indeed cannot be explained: a woman with one leg walks into the water and after 5 minutes returns with two healthy legs.

Awww, steveroot beat me to the "Cool Hand Luke" quote, except that it wasn't Luke who said it, but one of the guards, as I recall.

Mind you, I think you underrate his (Azimov's) sci-fi, especially the early stuff.

I didn't remember the guard, but I have a memory of Paul Newman shouting the line out of a window just before he was shot near the end of the movie. But, what the heck, I haven't seen the movie in 40 years

Geoff remembered the line that is listed among the quotes here:
http://imdb.com/title/tt0061512/quotes

"Captain, Road Prison 36: What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men."

So.... I guess there's *evidence* for his belief, but only personal experience for mine. :-( I defer to the evidence!

As for Azimov, have you read "Azimov on Numbers"? One of my favorites. You're right about the sci-fi, as well. He described a digital calculator with an LED display in "Foundation" in - what? - 1955?

Some of the religious do rejoice when loved ones die. Not many, but a few. Those are the ones that really scare me.

One of my wife's good friends was a christian scientist. She developed a squamous cell carcinoma on her eyelid which took eight years to kill her. Cutting to the chase: at her funeral, one of her CS "friends" wore a beatific smile and talked about the "better place" our friend was in. It took all my restraint not to smack her.

BTW, how's come we never hear jack shit about christian science on this forum? Maybe because it's a cult, not a real religion.

As far as steveroot's comment #7, it may not have crossed the mind of Christian lunatics that God can defend Himself, but God has certainly made it clear in the Christian and Jewish Scriptures that vengeance belongs to Him and not to His people.

Yes, that *is* interesting, but still there is no action without human involvement. And, of course, there will never be. A blasphemer being struck down by lightning *on command* (and in front of reliable witnesses) would probably serve as reasonably good evidence for the existence of the loving god we hear so much about.

Historically or otherwise!
Just because you refuse to accept it as an authority on Creation, you deny it's historicity and scientific statements as well.

You really need to broaden your horizons, my friend. (Eg.: Pi = 3)

...you may find yourself answering to the same Creator for why you discredited His words and denied His existence. OUCH!!!!! Do you think it will really go well for you in His presence.

By the way, it will be too late at that point for me to say "I told you so." So I'll do it now.
Be careful how you treat Him, His Son, and His Book. He does hold people accountable for this!

Ah, yes... the threats. This means you're desperate. Ho hum.

Your apparent churlishness surely stems from an unexpressed disagreement?
Go on, you know you want to... :)

Is this perhaps the pot calling the kettle black? Never mind; no churlishness intended. I was very short of time.

In fact, as you suspected, I *do* disagree with you here, and even if I were the only one here disagreeing I would make no apology.

To my best knowledge, there is no "instruction manual" (surely not... a holy text?!?) for dealing with these situations. Personally, I favor a "measured" approach (which is how I see Dr. Dennett's letter), at least initially. I suppose we could resort to military intervention to rescue the student, but that might be a bit hasty ;-).

We may have to agree to disagree here; however, I believe we have a lot more common ground. Well, I've got some more churling to get back to...

Respectfully, I think Dennett, and yourself, have gone too far already down the appeasement path. As have those posters here who have given wholly uncritical and effusive support to a piece which is not nearly as deserving of praise as they think.

The difference of opinion is noted.

I love being scientifically literate in so many areas that I can understand the details of both String Theory and genetic engineering.

"If you think you understand String Theory, you don't understand String Theory."
Oops... that was Quantum Mechanics; no matter, as you also seem to have that well in hand. Good luck with your book project!

I'd be interested to hear his thoughts on exactly what it is that makes it such a "great faith"?

It *does* sound a little patronizing, but Dr. Dennett has doubtless carefully crafted his statement, as noted previously. Minus the rabid intolerance, would it be any less "great" than christianity? His letter was about as succinct and appropriate as it could be IMO.

What is most glaring to me is that it never crosses the mind of these ****** lunatics that an omnipotent and omniscient perfect god could quite easily deal with the offending party himself if he is truly bothered by the egregious offense of speaking ill of ______________ (fill in your favorite).

This applies equally well to christianity and any other religion claiming an "omniscient and omnipotent" deity.

I would find it hard to be dignified in that goofy get-up Herr Ratzinger and his predecessors wear. What's with those crazy hats anyway?

It hides the dish aimed at heaven. How do you think he gets his information? ;-)
