Yes, the screaming stuff pisses me off also, notice how the greatest players have always won silently. I think the screaming is at least partially gamesmanship - a distraction ploy.

My favourite player is Justine Henin, people are always going on about her power for such a small person, but clearly, she gets all her weight behind the shots and that's the key. It's like boxing (I did some of that as a kid before I wised up :)), the best punches travel short distances but the body weight is behind them. I think womens tennis would be really good if they had to play five sets, imagines the rallies you'd get as they got more tuckered out. The worst mens matches are the ones where one guy is serving aces consistently -- boring.

It would add to my enjoyment also, I find women's tennis more entertaining.

That doesn't seem right epeeist, Why does one never see women gymnasts perform these cruciform excercises on the rings? That is an excellent test of strength/weight ratio.

"He is bisexual"
Perhaps, if so he's the strangest one I ever saw.
Veronique made reference to my brothers earlier, so I have to confess he wasn't even counted in my post about us walking down the street. You must remember this was thirty odd years ago, homosexuality was not acceptable. After coming out, my father took years to accept him back as a family member. In those days gay bashing was common and my brother was very effeminate, had the rest of us not protected him he would have been victimised. Fortunately, he fared better than most gays and had the pleasure of seeing us punish a couple of would-be tormentors.
What I can't understand, is all his life he never showed the slightest sexual inclination toward women, they liked him of course, he gossiped and went shopping with them etc. He epitomises the stereotypical gay, but now late in life he's taken to sleeping with a woman, I must say she is a somewhat strange woman. From general life experience I've noticed that bisexuality seems to show itself well before the age of fifty. That's why it seems to me he's like an ex-gay person.

"I guess all you need to do to kill is dehumanise a person. If you see them as human, then you find it hard to kill."
Dehumanisation makes it easier to kill a victim in cold blood, but when another human is trying to kill you, it suddenly becomes easy to kill him, humanity goes out the window.

This is for all you homosexual buffas. My youngest brother is gay, or should I say was gay. Now in middle-age, he still has his male partner of many years but recently took a girlfriend also. All three share the same house but the male has been relegated to a room where he sleeps alone.

Haha! Another nice one Veronique, even better than your last, definitely the most entertaining post on this thread. Score 9/10. If you'd been a little less nice I would have given you full marks. I don't advocate this style in reply to all, but since it's impossible to debate boring pricks who rehash the same old tired circular interminable bullshit, complete abuse is exactly the correct response. It gives them nothing to argue against, as you can see from his reply! He just wants you to stop!
I've been accused of being the RD rottweiler - a compliment I greatly appreciated - I think perhaps you and I should get together and breed a whole bunch of vicious, snarling, out of control atheistic canines ready to rip the throat out of any bleating, sheep-shagging, child-molesting, gay-hating, toupee-wearing, logically-barren, word-wangling, mind-numbing, death-denying, crashingly-boring, stunningly-stultifying religious tossers of any persuasion. *pauses for breath* What say you?
Incidentally, though you are getting good, I think I still have the edge; I just added my last post to the "scarlet letter" thread in reply to a pathetically timid ticking-off Mr Empirical gave me. Ah shit. As I said to your buddy, he simply didn't like the fact that I made a comment that I would not have commented as he had; things went rapidly downhill from there. In the midst of it you jumped in and made what I considered – and I think you know – was a lame excuse for him. Cleary, the fault is not all mine, as evidenced by the posts of others he has upset. I did not – as I think you should not – intervene in those disputes because I let people fight their own battles. Only in a case of bad injustice or bullying would I make a third party intervention.
Now, in an impersonal debate, I endeavour to avoid ad hominem attacks, this was not a debate, it was a personal attack on my judgment, as you may say I attacked his, and yours! Fine. In such a situation I see ad hominem as the way to go, and I chose words and phrases specifically intended to irritate and annoy. I do this because most people get upset by such behaviour but I on the other hand, do not. This is the internet where all are brave, they behave differently than in the real world where the fear of the ultimate sanction – violence – may be used against them; we all know this.
If you and your buddy physically ganged up on me in the real world, the odds would be against me so I'd have to talk my way out of the situation, but I'd do it in a way that would indicate the folly of physical injury to all three of us. In this medium people hurl abuse at each other instead, high intellect does not prevent such behaviour. Back in the early nineties, most people on the baby web were pretty smart, that's where I became accustomed to giving and getting abuse. The words I used here were tame by the standards of those good old days! So, if people want to hurl abusive words at me like wanker, asshole, prick, plonker, tonk, cumbubble, fuckstain or even some of the more disgusting ones I'll refrain from using here, well then, fine.
I'm well aware that by making a direct judgmental attack on someone, I leave myself open to a torrent of abuse to which I will reply with a hopefully better torrent of abuse! What I can't abide, is bleaters who pathetically try to insult my intelligence in a weak and timid way by making appeals to use my intellect.
THIS IS MY INTELLECT! If you don't like it hurl some abuse you cowardly dork!
Look, part of our job here is to entertain, give the folks something to laugh at or look forward to! I'd bet there's a whole lot more people here who read my posts than reply to them! Hitchens understands that, if he could get away with it he'd be a lot more abusive believe me; do you think he does all these shows for free? You should think yourself lucky, I'm doing all this for nothing! The enjoyment is all I get! Of course I run the risk that a short-sighted administration would ban me, but hey, methinks a few of you here would secretly wish for the return of Yorker!
However, as I said on another thread, I'm off to Madagascar as soon as I can arrange it so you'll have to live without me for a few weeks. I hereby terminate my comments on this thread.

I didn't know about your "ReligiBoard" before Veronique, but I sure like it! You seem to be a lot like me, I used to have multiple signs on my outside door frame to scare off unwanted callers and I love doing things publicly that the average person wouldn't do. For example, last month I was going to visit my sister and decided to have some fun with people on the toll bridge over the river Tay in Dundee. Before I left home I printed off a few sheets of paper and double folded them. On reaching the tollbooth I handed the guy a fiver, four of the folded papers and said:
"This is for me and the next four cars behind me, give each of them this note and keep the change for yourself"
As you can imagine, this unusual event took the poor guy by surprise but before he could raise any objections I drove away. Now, the key point here is that you can't stop on the bridge so I knew the cars behind wouldn't try to, but there sure was a lot of headlight flashing behind me. At the end of the bridge there is a multiple exit roundabout and of course I couldn't be sure what direction any car would take, so I just kept driving round and round until each car caught up and I could get a look at the driver giving each one a broad smile and a friendly wave. They all looked bemused and some waved their sheet of paper at me, the terrific kick I got out it was well worth the fiver. On each sheet I had typed in huge typeface:
"RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS WEEK, PLEASE PARTICIPATE"
I recommend everyone to try things like this, it does wonders for your well-being. Well, I could relate many more things that I did with a like-minded friend but that'll do for now I think, I need some sleep.

The thought just occurred to me that perhaps we try too hard to be fair and avoid confrontation. Since atheists are beginning to unite for political reasons it's inevitable that some of us will be less than perfect. If, in the long term things get heated and a few of get jailed or some end up with damaged reputations, so what? Personally, I'll be happy if we complete the task that Hume started all those years ago, I don't want to hurt religites physically, I just want to see them powerless and politically castrated. Let the ever-dwindling faithful mumble their mumbo-jumbo in ever-increasing isolation as they slowly wither and die.

Hey, nice one Veronique, looks like us oldies are starting to kick some arse around here! Much of it sorely needed I might add. :)
Only one thing:
"He's a towy little (and as old as I am) shit..."
What does "towy" mean? I guess it's Aussie for "feisty" perhaps, if so, you're right, I prefer not to be but I find it necessary sometimes. Oh, one more thing, you're the first person to ever call me "little", I am a 220lb rugged-looking -- some might say ugly -- bastard with reasonable intelligence and a still quite powerful body. A combination that has served me well so far! So be warned! Less of the little! :)
I think we're the way we are because of environment, circumstances and self-modification. I was born during WWII and have 4 brothers and 2 sisters, I'm the eldest; that was a lot of mouths to feed in the hard times following the war, we had to grow up tough. My father was a career military man who applied discipline strongly but with absolute fairness, perhaps a degree of aggression was instilled into me then. I can say this, when my brothers and I walked down the street as young men, people got out of the way, nobody f***ked with us!
I see a big change in kids today; many totally lack self-discipline and are driven by greed and selfishness, it seems nobody has taught them the value of life. In my day we punched noses, removed the odd tooth here and there, but we didn't stab or shoot each other like twelve year-olds do these days. And, it has to be said, this took place when every kid had a jack or sheath knife for use when camping or rabbit skinning. Only the lowest of cowards would use a knife in a fair fight, there are no fair fights these days. One might think this modern attitude would give us brave soldiers in time of war, but the reverse is true, witness the bunch of well-armed cowards who surrendered without firing a shot a few months ago, were they ashamed on release? Not a bit, all they could think of was selling their story to the media; a despicable group of spineless bastards in my opinion; I hope the day never comes when we need to depend on wankers like these to defend us.
Ahh, it seems I've gone off on a rant here which wasn't really my intent, although much more could be said, this is not the place.

I see you're still smarting; it's making you talk crap! Normally, I would never correct people's spelling errors but I would have thought a highly intelligent person like you would know how to spell "rottweiler" and "unpatriotic".
"What business is it of yours, Yorker, to suggest to Maverick that he is only entitled to post here if he satisfies your particular model of "good form", "good taste" and "good opinions" . . . ? ? ? . . ."
Now where in the hell did I say anything remotely resembling that?
"I'll tell you, none. Jees, you're like some smart-arse Republican in the states who says that Noam Chomsky is "unpartriotic" because he dares criticise the way the country is being run."
What a silly irrelevant thing to say! Have you just stumbled across your first Chomsky article and feel the need to tell the world about it? As it happens, I like Chomsky, a lot more than I like you – I'm starting to dislike you!
Look, what business is it of yours to stick your nose into a comment I made directly to someone else? I'll tell you, none! Use your 182 and get a grip! I notice you're upsetting other people also, like I said before, you lack experience, I don't know your age but you sound and act young so I'll leave it there. I merely pointed out that you seemed to be unaware that there had been 257 posts preceding yours almost all of which talked about its purpose. Not thinking you stupid, I therefore made the natural assumption that you had not read any of what had gone on before.
Atheism is non-belief in god(s). A group of people with this persuasion have come together here and formed an atheistic movement. The administrators of the site have decided that this movement now needs promoting; I would have thought that would be clearly obvious to all readers of this thread. You have missed the point, when atheists get together to present a united front then atheism IS being promoted whether you define that way or not. I did not say you weren't entitled to an opinion; only that if you didn't like what you saw, nobody's making you stay.
This is Richard Dawkins website, he is providing the articles and videos you come to see and you have the cheek to complain about the marketing of his own site! You don't know how lucky you are, almost every other site in the world makes you wade through a forest of ads before you get to the content, many require you to sign up before you even get to read or see anything! It may be news to you but web sites are not free and have to be administered, somebody (probably Richard) had to pay up front for all the setup and the ongoing maintenance, I'd be surprised if he's even recouped out of pocket expenses yet.
Frankly, I'm appalled at the gall you display but you're not alone, there seem to be a few others out there with the same selfish, out of touch with reality attitude!

It's good fun to be friendly towards doorstep
evangelists. I always offer them an equal time deal for them to present their case and for me to present mine. They almost never take it up, those that do always try to escape after a few minutes into my speech. I wrote a post many months ago on this site on how I go about it. Recently however, I had a visit from a JW couple and I almost liked the guy, he showed a genuine interest in what I was saying but was prevented from going too far along my road by continual interruptions from his wife.
The books I gave my cousin were:
"Climbing Mount Improbable" - Dawkins
"The Blind Watchmaker" - Dawkins
"A Devils Chaplain" - Dawkins
"Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" - Sagan & Druyan
"Demon Haunted World" - Sagan
"Broca's Brain" - Sagan
"The God Particle" - Leon Lederman
"Dragons of Eden" - Sagan
"The Emperors New Mind" - Roger Penrose
"Unintelligent Design" - Robyn Williams
She found Penrose' book a bit heavy going but loved the rest, now she wants to borrow TGD from me!

A long time ago I imposed upon myself a rule that prevents me wasting time engaging in conversation with any religite that cannot answer the following very simple question:
"Are you, as I am, willing to accept there is a possibility however slight, that your belief is simply wrong?"
I put this to every religite I ever meet who engages me on the subject of religion, including the ones I always invite into my house when they come door-knocking. In 40 years not a single one has ever said "yes", they can't, they are fully aware that debate on such a simple equal footing would be disastrous for them. This is why I see no point in talking to them although I will talk with others about them. During his interminable trolling through this site, The Rev has occasionally picked up on things I've written as he did here, but he never says much, he realises it would be pointless.

Well, I thought about it but it involved another person and I'm not sure she'd want me to tell the story, so I'd better not.

Billy, I wonder if The Rev. has come across that hoot of a post about the guy on a stick you made the other day? I hope so. :)

Yes, yes, very funny guys. I suppose I'd better come clean, I was thinking of Hitchens since he lives in the USA and has become a citizen.
Gotcha! Didn't I? Be honest now...:)
