In the 1980s there were already the promise of this great unifying theory and even the theory of everything to be available within a few years (also according to Hawking). Now so many years later indeed nothing of great unifying has come out, just 5 different 9D theories which had to be unified into a common 10D theory M/superstring theory.
Until now even the GUT havn’t been confirmed by expirements (proton decay in 10**35 years average), possible the Vacum field, Higgs ocean or however you like to call it can be confirmed or falsified from CERN next year(s). For string theory tests energy levels must be magnitues higher … testable not in this century if at all.
About books for different universe models : I just finished reading Paul Davies >Goldilock Enigma< explanation of cosmology without much formulas. The first 2/3 of the book is scientific explanations the last 1/3 some strange subjective ideas about different universe models. Ok the book research was sponsored from Templeton, but for this Davies lash out quite a lot at the ID explanation variant (not the best investment for Templeton).
The other all explaining alternative to String theory would e Multiverse theory , both are somehow >everything is possible< and something which explains everything explains in the end nothing…

Comment #122294 by Roland_F on February 5, 2008 at 6:36 am
I think this misunderstanding of < theory > is coming (especially in Germany) from the term < Theory and praxis > means some setting of challenging plans and targets which are failing miserable in praxis.
So in common language the word Theory has a very bad reputation.
Only later at university I learnt the meaning of a scientific theory, and when the Prof was first telling there is nothing more practical than a theory everyone laughed. It took some time to digest the meaning of the word to a tested, falsifiable, peer reviewed explanation of real life test data.

It's all only about global Hegemony, US dominance, Pax Americana...

Comment #121660 by Roland_F on February 3, 2008 at 10:43 pm
This story seems to follow the same pattern around the world: In Germany (Bavaria) there was also a case of cover up: the Bishop moved his pedophile priest just to the next village and his acts continued.
When parents complaint the whole clergy and the other Catholics in the diocese pressurized them to shut up .. You don’t sue priests this is taboo.
As the Catholic clergy consists of around 50% gays in central Europe, US statistics show 20-50% (average population 3%) this might be only the tip of the iceberg. Some insider e.g. catholic theology teacher at university called the Catholic Church “the biggest transnational gay organization”.
Somehow I have these 11.000 cases of pedophilia in the US priesthood in mind, not sure if these are really all lawsuits or just the estimate of the entire iceberg.
Maybe the gay priesthood prefers the altar boys because gay sex between adult men is a sin punishable by death but with young boys it’s all fine and allowed ?!?
Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Why hit on medical research to reduce suffering and never say a single word about the real Frankenstein laboratories developing and improving VX nerve agents, Anthrax, Ebola etc. based biological warfare? I have never heard anything from the clergy against this kind of science research.
It seems more that this true faithful conception (intercourse without lust in missionary position and think deeply about God during orgasm !!) Is the last gap of divine miracle, which the ‘bad scientist’ wants to take away with stem-cell research.

Just found this about Afghanistan where most European (and the US) governments spend billions of Euro for aid, infrastructure support to 'build up a democracy' and 'fight extremism at it's source':
[ KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - An Afghan court on sentenced a 23-year-old journalism student to death for distributing a paper he printed off the Internet that three judges said violated the tenets of Islam, an official said..Kambaksh discussed the paper with his teacher and classmates at Balkh University, and several students complained to the government, Wahab said.]
So printing out an article in the internet and discuss with his professor and students during class is eligible for a death penalty in this heavily supported 'democratized' country.

Comment #114301 by Roland_F on January 21, 2008 at 8:31 pm
In another posting I already showed that morality can not come from the Bible at all. I was using verbal explanation instead Boolean algebra. When the only source of investigation is the Bible, there is no way to derive anything as morality good or bad when it's contradicting each other.
Example : is killing morally allowed -- true or false ?
Source 10 commandments : you should not kill => killing = False
871 stories about God ordered murder, genocide => killing = True
The 871 counts: http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/index.htm
So it can't be decided from the Bible alone because of all these contradictions. Or just decide by the majority of hints in favor of 871 to 1 for killing = true. Then killing is morally acceptable and very God pleasing.
When highlighting this total inability to logically derive any morality from the Bible and the complete inability of a fixed 2000 and 2500 years old book to adapt to changing Zeitgeist (no more slavery, treat women equal ), the last defense of religious people is a single sentence inside the NT about the 'Golden Rule' of reciprocal altruism, so from 400 pages there is just this 1 single sentence left as moral guidance. And this Golden Rule is millions of years old, also encountered in animal behavior and therefore nothing new introduced from Jesus in 33-36AD.
So all morality can only be derived from a value system outside old books. The cherry-picking of a few sentences from 400 pages, rejecting some of the teachings, individual interpretation in a Catholic, Anglican etc. sense are all done based on external value systems of each Bible interpreting individual.
So holding up a book (the 'empty page Bible' from Steve Zara ) is just a smokescreen to gain more trust for someone's very own individual morality system.

There was this habit of the prophet also mentioned how good this values are.
My intention was more the possible 2 year prison term for highlighting this 6year marriage, 9 year intercourse fact of the prophet in Austria. Ok the politician is rightwing and made some other crap statements, so this news article just mentioned a possible 2 years jail term.
So what is the difference: Michael Jackson admit he likes to sleep with young boys, Mohammed with 9 year old girls both would be consider pedophile for our standards why is this a crime to highlight this about the prophet but not for M.J ??
Double standards !!

What I wanted to highlight is more the preventive surrender from the appeasement fraction who give away piece by piece the 'Western values' like free speech, free press etc
Highlighting that the prophet married a 6 year old girl and take her with 9 is a fact that should not be hidden for appeasement. Involve them in rational discussion if this is possible at all and don't shy back because they claim it's based on faith and therefore taboo to discuss anything.
There are some other similar Islam topics running parallel today in this forum, so my intention is more about to 'stand up and fight our achieved values' and not let fundamentalists of every religion highjack and occupy the moral high ground based on their holy books.
It's not about agitation but about defending rationally our position also -or especially against religious faith heads.

Let's see it as a first step towards enlightenment.

Sounds like a white male American (e.g. privileged) joking arrogantly about suppressed poor masses.
The land of the unlimited possibilities (from dishwasher to billionaire) unfortunately there are lot's of countries where people don't have a chance of 'free choice' many of them just because US imperialism like Noam Chomsky would put it.
Anyway travel to some poor country, visit a slum, and see their miserable hopeless situation, fighting for daily survival which is jailing them in poverty with no chance to escape and get educated for a better life. Now go there and tell them it's their choice their own fault that they don't found Microsoft and became filthy rich.
There are some people who would have the chance in a proper environment and are just too lazy, but most of them are lost.
How to help them ?
Not just throwing permanent money for daily food, every person rescued from starvation today will have 10 kids in the next generation and these kids need to be feed then additionally the next time.
There is no perfect solution to end this problems, but as the root of all suffering is exponential population growth maybe the only solution would be using the aid for birth control measures. Unfortunately this is a religious taboo in Christian countries.

Comment #113188 by Roland_F on January 18, 2008 at 8:14 pm
What's new ??
Deism is just pulling back the God of the gaps all the way to the very beginning of the universe, basic constants of nature and evolution rules. So they have still some gap filler for the meaning of life left.
Many theists acknowledging the scientific findings and are talking more of a deist God, mixing it up with some theist God who still listening to their prayers and still try to keep their old fairy tale book alive somehow an exercise which requires quite some bending backwards .
There was this 'Pagan Christ' topic here in the forum, where the priest Tom Harpur was finding out that Jesus is the copy of the Egypt Horus myth from 2000BC. He then rethinks his whole Christian religion and define "the Jesus in all of us" more like Buddhist teaching but is still practicing as Anglican priest.
At least these developments are not obstructing the advance of science with fundamentalist or creationists crap.

Simple explanations accepted by millions of scientists and taught to billions of students in all these centuries. The book of Michael Shermer is nothing new, I've read all this examples in several other publications already.
There are other examples busting the myth of the Homo economicus even if there is no economic interaction with others to out compete each other:
people usually choosing the smaller 3 years salary total when the yearly earning is increasing rather than the higher 3 years total when it's decreasing:
Choice A: year-1 = 50T, year-2 = 60T, year-3 = 70T so 3 years sum is 180T
Choice B: year-1 = 80T, year-2 = 70T, year-3 = 60T so 3 years sum is 210T
Most people choose 'A' because it 'feels better' to go up instead down, a true Homo economicus would of course take 'B' especially as inflation is additionally benefiting the high payments in year-1.
There was for example the BBC series from Robert Winston author of the books 'Human instinct' and 'the human mind'.
His example was the rating of 'sexual attractiveness' of him from woman sitting in a café when
(a) arriving in an old car with old cloths then his attractiveness rating was 1-2
(b) arriving in front of the café in a Rolls Royce, with designer suit and Rolex watch his attractiveness rating was 9-10.
So status and money seems to make someone more attractive e.g. a clear advantage for selection.

All this imperfection is the best example that it can NOT be created that crazy by purpose from an all knowing perfect God, when even a highschool student with a little biology and anatomical knowledge could go the drawing board and propose a much better design.
The only reply I've got from cretinists was this imperfect design is made from God because of 'the fall' (Adam and Eve's sin in Eden which by the way happened AFTER all creatures already existed) or cretinists reply a Bible quote that there are unbelievers and the true faithful must be strong'.
