On Saturday, March 8th, 2008, Richard Dawkins gave this lecture on The God Delusion during his US Tour. The event took place on the UC Berkeley campus in Wheeler Auditorium, and was completely sold out. A line of hopeful attendees stretched around the side of the building, waiting to see if there would be any ‘no-show’ tickets at the last minute! There was a Q&A session that followed the talk, which will be posted to the site soon.

  • You talk about the past ancient religions as if they don’t exist anymore, but they do. It is called Wicca, and it is a very popular growing religion. It is a religion of free will. However, there are no rules and no laws, except ‘harm none, do as you will’. In my practice as a Witch, I do not call my Gods (gods-goddess and god-because it takes a man and woman to create life which how you and I got here), I see them as two forces of energy, expanding and creating our universe as we see it, actually scientists may have discovered my gods as Dark Energy and Black Matter. If you have never heard of this, I would advise you check it out. Anyway, back to what I was describing, the Earth is full of energy, if it weren’t then nothing would grow. The Earth is my Goddesses body and the water is her blood. The Earth the sun and the moon need each other as well as the planets and stars. We wouldn’t be here if any of those were missing. The oceans follow tides which follow the moons phases, and our planet follows cycle every year after year. In the winter everything dies and withers away, and our days are shorter, this is when the Goddess and the God are resting. When Spring comes about, the God and Goddess conceive and she spreads her seeds everywhere. In the summer, they are joined by all their children, everything is green and fruitful, in autumn, everything starts to wither and decay preparing for death, in the winter everything dies again. We see it as the seasons change and as our lives we experience many deaths and rebirths I mean we end some journeys to begin new ones. There is so much more to witchcraft, but don’t refer to it as nonexistent because it is, and it does have scientific prove.

    Michael 100 says:

“There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being.”  Charles Darwin

You are, of course, free to marvel at the grander of the cosmos any way that gives you satisfaction, but for my money, the world is all the more wonderful sans any supernatural mythology.  There is a natural explanation for each of the phenomena you cite, but if you want to live in a demon haunted world — “congress shall make no law…”
