Darwinian Selection Continues to Influence Human Evolution

New evidence proves humans are continuing to evolve and that significant natural and sexual selection is still taking place in our species in the modern world.

Despite advancements in medicine and technology, as well as an increased prevalence of monogamy, research reveals humans are continuing to evolve just like other species.

Scientists in an international collaboration, which includes the University of Sheffield, analysed church records of about 6,000 Finnish people born between 1760-1849 to determine whether the demographic, cultural and technological changes of the agricultural revolution affected natural and sexual selection in our species.

Project leader Dr Virpi Lummaa, of the University’s Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, said: “We have shown advances have not challenged the fact that our species is still evolving, just like all the other species ‘in the wild’. It is a common misunderstanding that evolution took place a long time ago, and that to understand ourselves we must look back to the hunter-gatherer days of humans.”

  1.  I haven’t read it but for the sake of testing out the new site I’ll take umbrage at your assertion!

  2.  It’s all a bit modern, innit? I like the clean look of the pages. Bit WordPress-ish – not that that is bad. Wot? No Avatars???? I think Avatars add a touch of personality to a thread. Ahah, a + sign with the word ‘image’ next to it? I think I’ll press it… a sign has said ‘just a moment’. Popup just told me that my photo was too large (+2.1m)?

I’ll try again… wow! little square pic appeared? I’ll click on it… wow! Opens in a big popup!! That’s cool!

Though when I simply mouse-over it I get a dark square with an ‘x’ (a close object) in it that is out of reach and disappears as I mouse-off?

  3. Awaiting moderation… presumably because I added an image? Perhaps this bit isn’t up and running yet?

  4. I’m glad the avatar is working for you.  Right now when you transfer your account if you have Gravatar set up for the e-mail you’re using it will be picked up from the old site when you transfer the account.  We do have plans for users being able to upload your own avatar and store it on RD.net as well but for the time being Gravatars are being used. Eventually we’ll have both options..

  5. I can see there is a problem with the aspect ratio for the image I just added.  When I click to open it’s fine, but we need to do something without thumbnails are displayed.

  6. The Terms and Conditions is just a carryover from the old site. No changes.  They way it works is that if we make a change to it the users are prompted to accept the next they log in.  We plan on configuring it for major/minor change criteria.  If we clean up a stray period or space you won’t have to reaccept but if we change the meaning or make any significant changes you’ll need to “reaccept”

  7. 2 things:
    1. Can I edit/delete my own post?
    2. Why isn’t my avatar showing up on the comments, despite it being visible to me on the top right of the page where it says: logged in as Bobwundaye.

  8. We know there is an issue with Avatars right now.  If you look down through comments below you’ll see one I made using a test account “mikecornwell” that one has an avatar (actually using Gravatar, same as the old site and same as the avatar showing on this comment), but it’s not showing  there either. Also you’ll notice that Anvil has comments both with and without his avatar.

As far as editing and deleting comments there is a time window like there was on the old site where you can edit them, and sometimes you may want to delete them after you’ve seen how they look in context but we don’t want people going back and deleting comments a week or month later as that can make subsequent contents not make any sense.  But editing a comment shortly after you post it is certainly something needed. I often don’t see my own typos until I’ve posted a comment or sent an e-mail.

  9. Nope, that just looks like my avatar, Mike.

It’s a seperate image I tested as an upload.

My avatar hasn’t show next to any posts –  but did show for a while at the top of the page in the ‘log in’ area.

Anyone remember the good old days?

  10. Bobwundaye you can edit and delete posts but you need to go to your Dashboard on the Disqus site.  Either login in to the Disqus (I don’t want to post a link as it causes my posts to go into moderation).  Or scroll up the top of the comments  to the DISQUS drop down menu on the RHS and select Dashboard.

Re the avatar have you gone into the Disqus Dashboard and told it to merge your RDnet account with the other Disqus posts ? I had to do that to get my avatar to appear. I think it’s under Profile in the Disqus Dashboard — there is a merge option.

  11. Anvil re the avatar try going into Disqus Dashboard and see if it wants to merge your RDFnet stuff with the Disqus profile. I think it’s under Profile in the Disqus Dashboard — there is a merge option.

  12. Done that, thanks Michael. Now see my gravatar in the disqus community – but not on this thread?

  13. And after updating my profile I now see my gravatar at the top of the page but not on my posts????
