US evangelical Christians accused of promoting homophobia in Africa

Liberal thinktank says rightwingers are aggressively targeting the continent with an anti-abortion and anti-gay agenda

Christian evangelical groups in the US are attempting a “cultural colonisation” of Africa, opening offices in numerous countries to promote attacks on homosexuality and abortion, according to an investigation by a liberal thinktank.

American religious organisations are expanding their operations across the continent, lobbying for conservative policies and laws and fanning homophobia, argues the Boston-based Political Research Associates (PRA).

The groups include the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), founded by the televangelist Pat Robertson, which has established bases in Kenya and Zimbabwe.

“The religious right [in effect] claims that human rights activists are neocolonialists out to destroy Africa,” the report states. Groups named in it vehemently rejected the claims.

Entitled Colonising African Values: How the US Christian Right is Transforming Sexual Politics in Africa, the study analysed data from seven African countries and employed researchers for several months in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It identified three organisations it believes are aggressively targeting the continent: Robertson’s ACLJ, the Catholic group Human Life International and Family Watch International, led by the Mormon activist Sharon Slater.

  1. And thats why organized religion should be banned, made illegal.Freedom of speech i one thing, but purposley making people ignorant and intolerant, creating more problems and pushing  humanity towards the dark ages is another. Most religious activies simply degrade societies.

  2. Are passports a privilege, or a right?  If not a right there ought to be a way of yanking these people’s passports.

  3. The irony is deep here. Militant christian homophobia is the colonial imposition, spread by 19th century missionaries and European-imposed discriminatory legal systems. Native African attitudes to abortion and homosexuality were very diverse before the colonial brainwashing of successive waves of muslim and christian conquerors took hold, and often surprisingly tolerant or accepting.

  4. How dare Pat Robertson found anything remotely called an American Center of Law and Justice. Is that ACLJ an acronym for Pat Robertson’s personal legal defense team?

  5. Is Africa the place where Ugly Religion goes to die? I certainly hope so, but at the same time I’m grieving for the regular people there.

  6. Atheism doesn’t stand a chance in a continent that’s been steeped in religion and superstition for ever and ever. I support the promotion of Christianity over Islam in Africa. Quite simply the lesser of two evils. And if you’re gonna compete with Islam you’ll have to prove you’re just as good at propagating good old hate mongering in the process. Let’s hate on the gays. Yay. Great for team building, that one.

  7. Rapidly loosing patience with this nonsense. I like the gay community, especially lesbians. Stop threatening them!

  8. Speaking both literally and figuratively, why can’t christians mind their own fucking business?

  9. Imagine a different target, e.g. Inhofe and friends were lobbying to make it a capital offence to be Jewish, even if you did not practice any Jewish rituals, and that it would be illegal to know a Jewish person.

Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal.

  10. They want to overrun the world with their kind.  Forbid birth control, forbid abortion, forbid anything that does not result in creating a poor, uneducated populace that they can control with their religion.  Oh, and you don’t need to worry about overpopulation draining natural resources because 1. the earth was put here by god for people to exploit as they please and 2. god will provide.

How dare Pat Robertson found anything remotely called an American Center of Law and Justice.

If you read the book “1984”, There is a (propaganda) “Ministry of Truth”!

    Does this sound familiar?

    – Then there is the pseudo-science creationist organisation, “Truth in Science”

BRAIN IN BACKWARDS  titles for their rubbish, seems to be a feature of lying for Jebus!

TrOOOOOOOooooooooofffff is a big religious feature which they think increases with repeated assertion!  (See – our religious revelations are all  TRroooooooooooo!)

  12. Religious organisations, especially the Catholic Church, will always lay its claws on the poor and uneducated. They therefore shifted their attention to Africa, where they can still find people that can be easily convinced and intimidated, with the help of oppresive governments of course. Ever asked yourself, why missionaries are not being sent to Estonia or Sweden, where churches still stand, but religion is virtually extinct? Because you will never “convert” or “revert” an educated population that enjoys decent living standards. Take, the contraception issue, for instance. As a person who just recently was a Catholic, I can tell you that in Europe you will not hear priests condemning their congregations from the pulpit or otherwise for using contraception. Most Catholics don’t even know the teaching that they must confess it as a grave sin. Why is Church in Europe nearly silent about that? Because they would make a mockery of themselves and would lose the last parishioners and a lot of income. Meanwhile, they go to a continent where people are already having more kids than they can handle and dying from AIDS and preaching and them excessively about the “evils” of birth control. They instill fear in the poor, desperate and uneducated, while at the same time giving them false hope. Europe is a lost cause to cause to the Church, Australia is as well. Not so sure about the US… South and Central America is firmly in the Church’s grip. So the real battle-ground is now Africa. Both Islam and Christianity want it, and whichever parts they are able to capture, they’ll tell them to multiply endlessly.

  13. I am inclinde to at least partially agree with Bipedal_Primate. Indeed the continent is too uneducated and superstitious to expect them to just shake the chains of religion off. They want to and they will believe in something, because in their poor and desperate and short lives they need HOPE. Unless secular forces are able to provide great amounts of assistance to give them reasonable hope, they will cling to whatever unreasonable – supernatural hope they can come across. And in this situation, Christianity is definitely the lesser of the evils. By interfering with Christian efforts, we may push them in the arms of Islam. And then they’re lost for yet another few centuries. So maybe Christianity is OK for now. Before you can run, you need to learn to walk.
