Dear Prof Dawkins,

I must thank you for your thought-provoking books which have helped me begin my religious detox process. While I am only 22 years old, I have struggled with the question of the origin of life for more than a decade. I must have looked for answers in over a dozen of spiritual traditions from Shinto to Native American beliefs without ever being satisfied with them! While I knew these traditions were not based on evidence, I kept moving from one religion to the other in fear of not worshipping the right god when the apocalypse comes!

Maybe I should tell you that I am about to obtain my bachelor of science in agricultural sciences. I have no clue as to how I managed to get so far in my studies while believing all sorts of weird fairy tales! Your books have made me realize that science has a wonderful story to tell us on the origin of life that, unlike religious beliefs, is supported by a substantial amount of evidence from various scientific disciplines.

I now feel very depressed when I see other undergraduate and even graduate students promoting their irrational beliefs in homeopathy, witchcraft (Wicca), vitalism (Biodynamic agriculture) and other nonsensical theories. While I am amazed by the great achievements of scientists over the last centuries, I am saddened by the lack of rational thinking among future researchers and I wish that every university had a series of courses on the basic principles of the scientific method. I am convinced this would be extremely beneficial for the advancement of science and I plan to submit this idea to the dean of my faculty!

Thank you once again for your work,

Alexandre A
