I don’t know if you will ever read this message or whether it will be lost in the thousands of emails that i’m sure you receive daily; I also don’t know if instead of you, a staff member is instead tasked with the burden of reading through these and forward you the ones worthy of your attention.
I just wanted to thank you. You have changed my life in more ways than you can imagine, and i am forever thankful for that.
Your book, The God Delusion, opened my eyes to a world where things made sense; it made me realize that believing in evolution was ‘OK’ and it is ‘OK’ for logic to push out the superstitions that i had, and that nothing bad would happen as a result.
I was a practicing Muslim….by choice……i was brought up in a ‘non-religious’ family and through different events in my life, believed in a ‘god’. i believed that this god was not the god of Islam, nor the god of Christianity; but instead, it was a common god that loved us, and that he/she was the same ‘loving’ god that people had turned into a monster. i also believed in evolution and the scientific aspect of the world….although i chose to allow these two ideas to live simultaneously when in reality, they simply could not.
your book made me make that distinction and made me realize fact from fiction.
I have been an Atheist for a little more than 2 years and could not imagine how upset i would have been if instead of reading your book at 27, had instead read it at 75 years of age. that, in itself would have been the biggest tragedy of my life.
I’m looking forward to reading your latest book (The greatest Show on Earth), and hope to meet you in person one day.
I hope this letter finds you well and I would love nothing more than to hear back from you.
