To Mr. Dawkins,
I don’t know that you will actually receive this letter, but I feel compelled to write it anyway.
My name is Ali, and I’m a sixteen year old ex-muslim from the United States. I’m writing to thank you for your contributions, your books, and your films, as you have – in ways words cannot properly describe – opened my eyes on the world and to science.
I came across your book, “The God Delusion”, nearly a year ago in a somewhat dark point in my life, and it helped me overcome the fear caused by my religous doubts. It opened my mind to reality, and for that I’m very grateful.
Since then, I have become very interested in science, especially biology and cosmology, more so than I already was. And though it’s been a somewhat hard journey the past year, I’ve had to leave my home and have been alienated by my mother (a somewhat well known speaker on Islam here in the US and in Canada), I am now much better off – intellectually and emotionally – much to your credit.
Whether it be through your books, lectures, or documentaries, you have excited me about and rekindled my life for science and helped free my mind from the chains of religion. I want to thank you for that.
I’m sure you are quite busy, and I don’t want to keep you for too long, but I would also like to wish you a happy birthday with your family and friends.
Thank you, Professor Dawkins.
