I’m going to write this email as though the great Richard Dawkins is going to read it personally, even though I assume he will never see it. However, I digress.
I was never happy with religion. I tried it in many flavours, beginning with the forced attendance at Anglican Sunday school, which I now believe was my parents’ escape from a houseful of brats. As I aged, I dabbled with baptists and jehovah’s witnesses to name but a couple. I suppose I was looking for the one scion of Christianity that had all of the answers. (Of course, no sect outside of christianity could possibly have ANY answers.) Eventually I moved to Canada, and met the lutherans. I would like to say that my first reading of "The god Delusion" sealed the fate of that imposter, but that is not true. The level of hatred levelled upon their fellow human beings by the most hard-line gang of religious maniacs outside of catholicism or islam finally made me realise that I was not going to find the answers in any religion.
From that moment I developed my own brand of atheism. I knew that I was comfortable, if somewhat lonely, without the existence of a god, but being a creature of few words, was never able to defend my position against well-meaning cretins who assured me that I was only an 'agnostic’ and would return to the fold soon enough. 'The god Delusion’ changed my life. I now had the words, and concepts, to explain my understanding of how I viewed, and understood, the world. I’m looking forward to reading many more of your works, and intend to live this, and my only, life with the full enthusiasm it deserves.
Thanks, Richard, for taking the time and trouble to write it all down.
