Richard,
I'm a Graduate student studying opera in NYC. I'm originally from Kentucky, the product of a single mother and a good ol' Catholic upbringing. I heard about your new book on Real Time with Bill Maher, and was happy to know that there was a book that would answer all the things I'd put out of my head since I was 8 or 9 years old. I certainly feel like a convert though I think I had left faith many years ago. Catholicism in my family is more cultural to us than real religion (though most of my family believe in talking snakes and walking on water), and that part of my life has been hard to part with. I recently told my mother who is also my best friend and contributes quite a lot of money to my education in music, that I was a “full blown atheist”. Her response was remarkable. She said to me “Well I'd rather have a good-hearted atheist for a daughter who knows what she believes than a hypocritical Catholic, which most of them are.” How lucky I am to have such an accepting mother who has always let me do what felt right to me. I wish everyone could know what that was like. She's reading your book right now – I think we may yet have another convert…

Come to NYC and speak soon!

Thanks for all that you've done.

Alexandra, NYC
