Deferring Credit , Good, Tue, Jan 29 2013 #(1755)

One of my students, a 17 year old male, was in class. We dedicate 22 minutes of every day to reading a book….any book. He never read. Never. It was an ongoing source of tension between us and a reason for me to have to discipline him (the reading initiative is district policy). He would tell me how stupid books are and what a waste of time. I handed him Richard’s book one day and dared hum to read it. One year later he has gone from failing subjects to dean’s list (no shit, here…the truth). He has read about 15 books. He comes and tells me about them almost every day and gives me credit for turning him around. I’ll defer that credit to Richard.
