Dear Professor Dawkins,
I would like to offer my thanks for the work you do in helping the world to understand science and evolution. In particular I have benefited greatly from the philosophical discussions you have had with Daniel Dennett and others regarding the ‘spiritual’ implications of understanding.

I recently went through a quite serious episode of depression following a relationship break up. At first my atheism offered no condolence to my pain. It made me realize why people turn to religion in times of hardship. I’m not capable of believing and knew that this was no time to be lying to myself and nurturing delusions.

I turned to science to look for answers and my casual atheism grew into a passion. It helped me to think of depression as unpleasant neural circuitry that can be fixed rather than some deep and lasting spiritual injury. Each time I watched your YouTube videos where you talk about the incredibly low the chances of being born- and the beauty of our ability to interpret life- my problems seemed insignificant.

Thank you for reminding me how beautiful a thing it is to be alive. I’ll never lose sight of it again.

I look forward to hearing you speak at the global atheist convention next April.

Don’t keep the faith.
