Dear Dr. Dawkins,
My name is Heather and I am a registered nurse in Canada. I wanted to write and thank you for your hard work, tireless research, and seemingly endless writing, lecturing and teaching. I am halfway through your fascinating and lovely novel The Greatest Show on Earth, and am looking forward to reading The God Delusion next. My boyfriend Christopher has read both, and indeed is responsible for introducing me to you. We thoroughly enjoy discussing religion, sharing scientific news with friends, and having debates about God with others (though I must say, he is much more brave; I was raised in the “never challenge religion” mindset which still lingers. I’m working on it).
I admit that being an atheist nurse is challenging at times; specifically, being asked by patients with Bibles at the bedside if I believe in God. I am open and honest with my patients, and if they choose to decline my nursing care as a result, it’s their choice. Luckily that hasn’t happened yet!
If it weren’t for your books and (hilarious) YouTube interviews, our atheistic lives would be very boring. You continue to spark the interest in us, and remind us why religion is laughable, why evolution is beautiful and most importantly, why we should care. Thank you sincerely for all of it.
Take care, and keep writing.
