Dear Professor Dawkins
I am a 16 year-old high school student, who became an Atheist thanks to the insight in your book, The God Delusion. When I was 15 some of my friends were talking about religion and to my shock at the time I found out they were Atheists. I was a fundamentalist Roman Catholic with a golden crucifix around my neck and a pocket bible in my pocket. One of my friends (who is a big supporter of you) recommended, The God Delusion so I would re-evaluate my position on religion. At first I was very negative about you and read Alister McGrath’s The Dawkins Delusion (and a few other books) to go against your book (now I realize how much of an idiot he is, saying things like Atheism is on the decline). I was slowly being won over by your brilliant arguments in the book and watching your question periods/lectures on the internet. It was a slow process for me to become an Atheist, at first I was an Orthodox Catholic, then I believed in only the New Testament, then I was a Deist, then Agnostic and finally I became an Atheist. This came as quite a shock too many people at my school, who knew me as a hard-core Catholic and now when I was asked about religion I simply answered back, “I don’t believe in God”. This conversion has changed my life and I don’t even understand how someone like me could believe in such an obvious delusion. It was child Indoctrination, and it took me 15 years to realize this. I go to a Catholic School where I am forced to go a religion class once per year and I am disgusted, shocked and appalled by the so-called ‘facts’ we are learning. Looking back at my belief I don’t even know how people can believe in a God without any supporting evidence besides a book that was written thousands of years ago by sheep herders. When I was fighting with myself over my belief in God I read over the arguments for and against God’s existence. The Argument’s for God’s existence are just pathetic, a child can find the fatal flaws in all of them, where as the Arguments against God’s existence are much more problematic for theists to deal with. I have so much to thank you for, I am extremely glad that you wrote your book and hopefully started the destruction of organized religion (which has caused so much bloodshed in the past and even today) with the rise of New/Militant Atheism.
